of our weather from the Gulf stream. It hits the UK from the west and heads east. As the Pennine
mountain range is just to the east of Manchester, the clouds empty over Manchester before they get
to the mountains. This damp weather was one of the reasons why Manchester had such a successful
cotton industry. (Of course a few other cities that are to the west of the Pennines receive similar
rainfall)

On Saturday 15 June 1996, at a peak shopping time on Father's Day, a 3,000lb IRA bomb exploded
in Manchester, injuring more than 200 people and ripping into the city's main shopping centre. In a
state of shocked disbelief, police had begun clearing people from the area some 40 minutes before
the blast. Luckily, nobody was killed.
