Lesson: ​The League of Nations, the Interwar Period, and the rise of Time: 10:19-11:43am
ultranationalism. (81 minutes)

● Powerpoint Presentation with prepared questions and information
● Exploring Nationalism Textbook

Assessment:
Students will be assessed via their responses on the cartoon analysis, their participation in the charisma
activity, and their responses on the exit slip. A good understanding of course concepts on the exit slip will
be demonstrated by identifying political and economic crises as a reason for people to accept the ideas of
charismatic leaders.

Lesson Procedure:

Introduction / Review of last class - 10:19-10:35am (15 minutes)


1. Watch the video on the League of Nations as a summary of last class’s discussion.
2. Have students record the definition of internationalism (This was the ultimate goal of the League
of Nations)
3. Discuss / analyze the political cartoon of the video together to model how to analyze a political
cartoon

10:35-10:55am (20 minutes)


1. Give students 15 minutes (until 10:50) to analyze the next cartoon on their own
2. Spend 5-10 minutes reviewing what students came up with and connect this information to the
political crises that came out of WWI

10:55-11:15 (20 minutes)


1. Have students take Cornell notes for economic / political crises
2. Read pg. 144 of the textbook and answer the question on the slide
3. 11:10-11:15; have students write down their answer to the question “How do you think economic
/ political crises might contribute to the rise of ultranationalism?”

11:15-11:40 (25 minutes)


1. Have students take Cornell notes for charisma / charismatic leadership (5 mins)
2. Have students take 15 to find examples of charismatic leaders
3. Have select students share the examples that they found (have others post their examples on
google classroom)

CLOSURE 11:40-11:43 (3 mins)


1. Have students submit an answer to the following question (see “Assessment” above): “How
might economic / political crises AND charismatic leadership lead to ultranationalism?"
