Design for Instruction (DFI) SSE 3312 Unit Plan

Theme: Thirteen Colonies Grade level: 5th grade

- Pre assessment: students will try and fill out a blank map of the 13 colonies to test their
background knowledge.
- [formative assessment] Daily assessment: Students will create a journal where they will
store station work, graphic organizers, and other information regarding the 13 colonies.
They will create a journal entry each day where they respond to a certain prompt. The
prompts should apply to what they've learned that day in class.
- Post assessment: Students will complete a 15 question post assessment. They will also
create a brochure or advertisement for a region of their choice (either New England,
Middle, or Southern Colonies).

Who is the exceptional student you are planning for and what is their special need?

- The exceptional student we are planning for is Miguel. His special need is hearing
impairment.

Outline below, what will take place on each day? Who is responsible for typing that lesson?

Day 1: Introduction/location
- Students will be introduced to the 13 colonies, their location, climate and the basic
differences between the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies. Students will
create their own 13 colonies puzzle to help them review the locations. (Milynel)

Day 2: New England Colonies


- Students will be introduced to the climate, religion, resources, government, significant
figures, and daily life of the New England colonies. (Amanda)

Day 3: Middle Colonies


- Students will be introduced to the climate, religion, resources, government, significant
figures, and daily life of the Middle colonies. (Cheyenne)

Day 4: Southern Colonies


- Students will be introduced to the climate, religion, resources, government, significant
figures, and daily life of the Southern colonies. (Milynel)

Day 5: Review/Final Assessment


- Students will get a chance to review what they have learned about the 13 colonies as well
as their colony journal they have been keeping throughout the week. After class review
students will be assessed on their knowledge through a 15 question assessment.
