2017 has become a fruitful year for Tagaytay Highlands and it is to my delight that we
are able to end it on a high note. From international and local awards to new residential
projects and facilities at the Club – this year is indeed filled with good news and great
progress in this premier mountain resort complex we call home.

We have successfully introduced Horizon Terraces – our most refreshing take on holistic
living. This first integrated development will feature a residential mix of garden villas and

Further renovations at the Club are being done along with the launch of new facilities

and steadfast through club members’ unwavering contribution and support to the
Club. Our patronage has increased this year with the launching of the Highlanders
Card. That is why we have more activities in store for you as we bid goodbye for 2017
and welcome 2018.

As the season ends, we pray for joys and blessings. We long to see you here at the Club
this Yuletide festivities and we will not be tired of giving great services to you and
your family as we keep on updating our facilities and services for your comfort and
for your loved ones. Douglas Adams, an English writer, once said, “To give real service
you must add something which cannot be bought or measured with money, and that
is sincerity and integrity.” This to the best we can offer you. A service that is beyond

to know you more and to improve our service based on your valuable feedback. We
always wish for your great time and laughter as you create fond loving memories with

Don’t you just love the chilly Tagaytay breeze, the fog as it envelops the horizon
and the soft warm beds waiting for you here in Tagaytay Highlands? Every year, the

But first, we would like to congratulate the Highlands Ladies Federation in their
fourth year as Champions of the Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines
(WGAP). No words can better express our deepest gratitude for bringing this honor
to your home course. Year after year, the ladies teamwork, and dedication paved the
way for their victory. Keep it up and let our banner fly! We also pay tribute to the
regular golfers at the course. With Green Obsessions, we will have a peek at what’s

From abstractions of lines to the formation of an image,
pen & ink drawings allow the artist to create areas of
contrast to form the composition. In exploiting this
contrast, the artist uses varied techniques in drawing
lines like hatching, cross-hatching, cross contour,
random lines, stippling and ink wash. These create
the necessary layers and depths to form the imagery.
Presenting for the month of the arts, the Club shall
showcase the sceneries of Tagaytay Highlands with the
sophisticated strokes of a great South Luzon artist.

After a decade, the Camera Club of the Philippines
returns to Tagaytay Highlands to capture its innate
beauty. Surrounded by majestic views, members
of the most prestigious camera club in the country
took the opportunity to rediscover the splendor of
terrain, the intimacy with nature and the wonder of
capturing moments in a day of photographic adventure.
Special thanks to Marivic de Silva and Rocky Chan for
organizing the event in the Club.

Good news to our members! Our Membership
Committee has approved new provisions in our
policies.

Disqualified Dependents are now entitled to a Php 2,500.00 all-

consumable Guest Card instead of previously approved Php 400.00,
provided that the dependent was previously declared and qualified
upon activation of principal membership. This privilege is subject to
guest card policy of the Membership Office.

We also have a special privilege for members under application

processing. A Guest Card of Php 2,500.00 all-consumable, instead of
Php 400.00 is extended to Applicant Prior Approval. Please note

for golf club members! Tagaytay Highlands
International Golf Club and the Midlands Golf
Club recently bought a total of sixty electric
golf carts for its operations. Thirty Precedent
i2 Club Car 2-seaters and thirty Yamaha YDRE
2017 models were purchased as part of the
Club’s rehabilitation efforts. These units will
replace all old diesel-powered carts in both
courses. Enjoy a smooth and safe drive in the
courses!

You’re safe inside the Club!

Lifeline Ambulance is the club’s provider of immediate medical
assistance. It is a fully equipped state-of-the-art EMT unit which
includes a dedicated standby on-site crew of two licensed nurses
and an EMT driver, Emergency Medical Situation (EMS) basic
medicines, equipment, and supplies, like a cardiac monitor and
defibrillator, vital signs monitor, oxygen, suction machine apparatus,
immobilization, and patient transport devices. With our 24/7
Emergency Response and First Aid Team, you are sure to have round-
the clock medical service. Your health and safety is our concern.

agaytay Highlands is known for its ethereal landscape with towering pine trees. There is no place in the
country where we have so much araucaria trees swishing with the wind. These trees are celebrated icons
of the Club. They stand upright, tall and proud even after all Christmas trees are packed and stored. The
Araucaria heterophylla is also known as the Norfolk Island pine endemic to its namesake, a small island in the
Pacific. The tree can thrive in warmer climates. It is popularly called triangle tree or living Christmas Tree given its
symmetrical, conical shape and the Club is blessed to have thousands of these lovely trees all year round. Here is

GOLFING WITH STRIKELAND

ost golfers would admit that playing golf is quite
addicting. Looking forward to another day of
putting, swinging and making friends on the
greens, a golfer would definitely find time just to enjoy
with his clubs and golfing friends. As one would notice,
golf courses are situated or created in places where
there are spectacular sceneries. The greenery plains,
hills and water features add to the player’s challenges
while the cool fresh air and serenity calm the nerves for
concentration. A golfer would appreciate the course as
he walks the long fairways, it is a form of exercise. He
is giving a favorable time for his heart to beat normally.
For in every play, the heart must display character. For a
golfer must be with etiquette and great sportsmanship.
Thus, he is responsible for all his actions on the course.
Playing golf is not just an individual play game. It is a
great social event where you can relish time with friends
and even acquaintances. Arnold Palmer would say,
“success in golf depends less on physical strength and
more on strength of mind and character.”

The golf courses of Tagaytay Highlands and Tagaytay
Midlands are splendidly remarkable due to its
incomparable views, hospitable staff and great service
to golfers. It is one of the most visited golf courses in
the country, with a great number of amateur golfers
“addicted” to play on the course.
A group of golfers who call themselves the “Strikeland”
would precisely agree to the facts above. Their
camaraderie is strong that they would even meet weekly
to play golf (with friendly betting on the side). The team
leader, Daki Fonacier, is a Highlands icon. He is a hole-
in-one golfer acing hole no. 17 for two consecutive days.
According to the group, “Strikeland as translated into
Tagalog means ‘hampas lupa.’ Connected to golf – it’s
like taking a divot out of every golf shot. Taking a divot
after hitting the ball makes a good follow through”
This band of brothers would tell stories and jokes with
each other. Witnessed to that are the caddies and

marshals who serve and assist them on a weekly basis.

They are even called the Saturday group for they are
frequently seen playing on the greens of Midlands. Andy Sanchez and Doy Mercado
Another member, Egay Generoso would share that the General Manager Claire T. Kramer, Egay Generoso
group is “composed mostly of professionals bonded and Club President Jerry Tiu
together by the sheer love of golf. Some have been
friends a long time while others have met in business
dealings. Others joined in because of the great
camaraderie. Aside from golf, we love to sing. We are
karaoke singers. We like red wine. And we bet against
one another in golf.”

Like a bunch of young boys, a bet is always included

weekly as it adds to the excitement of the game. The
competition between flights is healthy. The team
believes that the good accommodation, warm staff,
the challenging course with nice sceneries, and
refreshing cool air help them to savor the game. Truly,
the addicting factors of golf lie in the environment and
friends. After a great game, they would proceed to
Midlands Golfers Lounge where they joyfully discuss
who won and who will foot the bill!

Obsession in the greens provides an adventure and

entertainment. It is an avenue to socialize and discuss
business. “The important shot in golf is the next one”,
said Ben Hogan. A game is different every play. There
is no same game. Unlike other sports, golf gives new
quests, challenges, and opportunities. One must have
the character to appreciate the game’s discipline and
complexities.

Lounge. It is a place where families and friends
gather for that special weekend lunch. With
its perfect views of Tagaytay Highlands, the outlet
has become a destination for reunion feasting. This
Christmas season order some of the club favorite
Filipino dishes at the Lounge. Perfect for sharing, these
time-honored dishes will surely make your drive truly
worthwhile.
Care for some Kare-Kare? Our version is a mix of tender
meat chunks and ox tripe complete with sautéed
string beans, eggplant, and other traditional veggies
smothered in thick peanut sauce. It is so savory on hot
rice you will not even need the quintessential bagoong
that goes with the bowl. Each order is good for four
persons. For the larger group, the Highlands Bulalo will

very December, days are shorter and
nights are longer. It is the time of the
year when we can appreciate more
of the night sky. Watch out for this! There
will be another Supermoon coming by the
end of 2017. On December 3, 15:47 UTC, the
moon will be orbiting on the opposite side
of the earth as the sun and its face will be
fully illuminated. This is also the time when
the moon is at its closest to the earth and
may appear slightly bigger and brighter than
usual.
Two meteor shower events are also on
course this December. The earlier Geminids
Meteor Shower is scheduled on the 13th to
the 14th. These are debris from the 3200
Phaethon asteroid discovered in 1982. It
is considered as the best meteor shower
given its multicolor visuals in the dark sky.
Another night show is on the 21st and 22nd
of the same month with the Ursids Meteor
Shower. Though just a minor shower, these
are interesting ancient twinkling lights made
from dust particles of the Tuttle comet first
discovered 227 years ago.

MEET THE MARKETING TEAM
E
very holiday the Marketing Team prepares a series
of events and promotions for members to enjoy.
Taking charge of the clubs annual social calendar,
this group of young professionals strives to make
your vacation extra memorable. The Marketing and
Communications team is divided into three sections:
the events and chapel affairs, creative communications
and the business development group. From social
events like concerts, culinary and wine tastings, art
exhibitions, Easter egg hunts, Halloween trick or treats
to religious festivities like Christmas, Holy Week and
usual weekend masses, the team meticulously plans all
details months before the event’s execution. It usually
takes several months to finalize an event enjoyed by
members in just three to five hours. All events are
carefully planned to meet the requirements of the
season, trends and interests of club members.
After all event details are planned, it is the task of
the creative communications group composed of
writers and graphic artists to creatively translate event

details into engaging print ads. Monthly they design
the newsletters aptly called the Monthly View. They
also handle in-house TV channels, club billboards,
and flyers. In coordination with the Membership
Services Department, the group disseminates SMS and
email blasts direct to all members. Also, club events
and promos along with event reviews are printed in
the Highlands View every quarter. With 70+ issues
published, it is the Clubs’ official lifestyle magazine for
22 years and still printing. The magazine is given for free
to all Club Members, affiliates and event partners.
And of course, we have the business development
unit handling the sponsorships, network linkages and
souvenir shop merchandising. Every event needs a
partner, our sponsors help the Club to sustain its annual
programs with the promotion of their products and
services. From golf tournaments to kiddie events, we
work hand in hand with our partners to give exciting
hole-in-one prizes, raffles, and giveaways for every
event.
New Years Countdown 2017

Club Marketing Director Phillip Medina has been with the Club for
almost eight years. He handles a young group of creative professionals
to carry out the demands of the department. A Certified Events
Management Specialist and with a Master’s degree in Art Studies, he
and his team strive to make each Club event truly worthwhile. “Our
daily deadlines are grueling but the act of learning, tasting, hearing,
and seeing so many things as we research, connect and create events
is always an amazing experience. We are challenged with timelines,
complexities of logistics, human relations, and customer satisfaction
in every program that we do. There is little time to relax. As members
and guests enjoy a party, let’s say the Countdown, we monitor program
sequence and personnel movement every 10 minutes just to ensure that
everything is done on cue up to the spark of the first light of fireworks.“
Similar to the operations of a theater, all program sequence happen on
prompt. From ingress to egress, each detail is carefully written done on
a production schedule for everyone to follow. “Our job is like a show,
everything is pre-planned, rehearsed and prepped up. This is a no-
sleeping job especially on holidays…”

Despite the seemingly strenuous work calendar, the team finds

happiness and meaning in their work. They are able to express their
ideas and individuality in the project they handle whether this is an
event or a magazine material. “Work-life gets better when we see our Marketing Director Philip Medina
members smile in every event we handle.”

With the 3rd Members’ Quarterly Golf challenge closing on

19 August, the tandem of Richard Tan and Anthony Tan got
the Low Gross Championship trophy while Andy Sanchez and
Danilo Carpio got the Low Net Championship crown. Joey Solis
and Greg Yang were champions for Group I while it is Jing
Cadiz and Lito Maraña for Group II laurels. Vergel Garcia and
Arnold Alvarez in Group III and the team of Connie Mamaril and
Generoso Mamaril in Group IV event. In Ladies Division (Open),
Jung Hee Kyung and Rosalie Heo won the division honors.

The Club was very fortunate for the visit of the century-old pilgrim image of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage,
also known as Our Lady of Antipolo on 9 September. Accompanied by the Tanglaw Foundation, the devoted
lay organization accompanying the Virgin in her pilgrim travels, a motorcade was arranged around the estate
culminating at the Holy Family Chapel where a mass was celebrated in her honor by Rev. Fr. Mike Cron of the Tahanan
ng Mabuting Pastol Seminary. Devotional stampitas were distributed to the congregation. On its second day, 10
September, the rector of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, Rev. Fr. Reynante U. Tolentino
co-celebrated the mass with staff and volunteers accompanying our Lady back to her home church in the afternoon.

Blessing of Pet Owners A Pilgrim Visitation of the

Considered to be a friend to animals and their
patron saint, St. Francis of Assisi is the epitome of
love and care for nature especially to our beloved
pets. The Club arranged a day of commemoration
as we invited members and guest in a special
blessing of pet owners last 1 October. The Mass
was presided by Rev. Fr. Randell Marero of the
Tahanan ng Mabuting Pastol Seminary. After the
final blessing, Fr. Marero blessed first the children
then the dogs. The club distributed collars as a
gift to pet lovers. Cats were found attending mass
with their owners in the afternoon Mass.
Miraculous Image of the
Holy Family
Last 6 August, the Club was blessed to be visited by the
miraculous image of the Holy Family sanctified by the late
Pope John Paul II. Before the Mass to be celebrated by
Rev. Fr. Randel Marero, Bro. Ed Karganilla shared a short
introduction regarding the image and the miracles it already
gave to people who touched it. It is believed that even if the
person is not around, you may pray for that person, and he
will be healed. The image stayed until the afternoon mass.

sports and other activities. This year, FEDCHOR 2017 was held at Splendido Taal Golf and Country Club on 7 August
2017. The Club brought home the Over-All Champion Award with various gold winnings in 8 sports events. The
most notable win is our very own Golf Services Department employee, Ms. Aileene Ferma, as she was crowned Ms.
FEDCHOR 2017. On 12 August, a victory party was celebrated for all participating employees in celebration of this
wonderful triumph.

Billano’s Cup
It was another successful badminton tournament this year. The Billanos Cup has been an annual sports activity open
for all HIghlands employees. Club Member Chats Billano generously hosted the event last 1 August at the Sport’s
Center Badminton Court. Awards and surprises were given to all the employees who joined.
