Micro air vehicles

A micro air vehicle (MAV), or micro aerial vehicle, is a class of unmanned aerial ve
hicles (UAV) that has a size restriction and may be autonomous with modern craft, the
small craft allows remote observation of hazardous environments inaccessible to ground
vehicles.
Micro Air Vehicles Design Requirements

Gross takeoff weight 100 grams

Stealth Geometries (low radar signatures)
 Payload capacity of at least 20 grams
 Small sensors (MEMS devices)
 Small scale power generation & storage
 Navigational and communication capability

Characteristics of an MAV
 Sufficiently small to fly inside building, caves, tunnels
 Sufficiently rugged to endure potential obstacle collisions
 Operable in all types of weather, including harsh gusts
 Perform stationary hover and be highly maneuverable unconfined spaces
 Possess a panoramic vision system for detecting, chasing, or evading target and
for navigation and collision avoidance
 Perform long cruise segments for deployment purposes.

What of the future???

 Autonomous Operation (Reconnaissance Inspection)

 Maneuverability
 Ultra low noise
All Weather Operations

Applications
 Traffic monitoring (long endurance)
 Surveillance missions
 Environmental Monitoring
 Communication Nodes/GPS
