Amber Barton E-Coaching Lesson 3

Character Motivation Wrap Up

 SMART GOALS
o Goal #1: Student Engagement
 I will provide rigorous and unusual lessons during our daily reading block
that will maintain student engagement throughout the entire lesson. In
order to be successful, I will need to plan my lesson and follow up
activities in advance to ensure that students remain on task. One strategy
that I will implement to maintain student engagement is the use of highly
interesting activities and choices for students. I will know that this goal
has been met when I see that my students are actively engaged in the
lesson and activities for 100% of the lesson.
o Goal #2: Classroom Climate
 I will provide a 4:1 ratio of positive to negative comments during each
school day. In order to be successful, I will use rubber bands on my wrists
to remind me of my praise to correction ratio. One strategy that I can
implement is task-specific praise as well as general praise for students’
behaviors. My goal is for this to become habitual over the next 3 sessions,
and to include a minimum of 10 positive comments to my class during
each lesson.
 OBJECTIVES
o Students will describe in depth a character’s thoughts, words, or actions [RL.4.3]
 BEFORE
o Prior to beginning the lesson, students will review their notes about character
motivation. Discuss vocabulary and differences in motivation
o Introduce ChatterPix and model how to use the app
 DURING
o To begin the lesson, students will be divided into groups of 5. Once students are
divided into groups, they will work together to choose from one of the following
fairytales: Cinderella (Cinderella or the Evil Step-Mother), The Three Little Pigs
(the wolf), or Beauty and the Beast (Belle or Beast)
o Once students decide on a fairytale, they will work together to complete a
graphic organizer pertaining to their character’s motivation
 What is the character’s motivation?
 Is the character’s motivation internal or external?
 Is the character the protagonist or the antagonist?
 What are the steps the character takes to achieve his/her motivation?
 AFTER
o After the students have completed the graphic organizer, review the steps for
using ChatterPix. Again, model for students using the projector and air play.
o Allow students to begin creating ChatterPix recording
 Students will use their iPad to take a picture of their character (pictures
displayed on the board to eliminate internet surfing)
Amber Barton E-Coaching Lesson 3

 Students will add a mouth to their character and record the motivation
using the graphic organizer as a guide
o Once students complete the ChatterPix recording, we will share them with the
class
 ASSESSMENT
o As the students are sharing their ChatterPix recordings, students will use a sticky
note to make note of which characters’ motivation was positive and which
motivations were negative
