f. Summary;
i. In this article, McComas aims to communicate the importance of the
nature of science (NOS). He begins by citing the studies that have shown
NOS to be an effective tool in schools. He believes that now is the time
when students need to know how knowledge is gain from science to
discern real facts from false ones. He touches on the debates that have
been held about what parts of NOS should be taught and recognizes that a
consensus has been reached. McComas discusses the three sections that
this consensus has divided what should be taught in schools should be
divided up as; Tools and Products of Science, Human Elements of
Science, and Science Knowledge and Its Limits. However, at the end of
his article, McComas says that these basic guidelines should be explored
by instructors and used to better the curriculum, not just given to students
to memorize, and that the instructors themselves should strive to fully
understand NOS. To conclude, McComas states that the nature of science
should be discussed thoroughly in the classroom, must be found in many,
if not all, sciences, and should be delivered by instructors who possess a

deep understanding of the subject and who give NOS the same importance
as other lessons.

f. Summary;
i. Doctor Staggers and Doctor Thompson begin their article by defining
medical informatics and stating that nursing informatics is a field all its
own within the nursing profession. Since it is deemed to be separate from
medical informatics, the authors defined nursing informatics which they
deemed important for nurses, especially those who specialize in
informatics, to know what it means. Staggers and Thompson first being by
noting the definitions that focus on the technology of nursing informatics.
However, this does not focus on what the nurse may do, so Staggers and

Thompson outlined some definitions that incorporate the way nurses think
and process situations. The authors point out that this became a popular
view because the way a nurse handles information is fundamental. As a
final set of definitions, Staggers and Thompson address those that focus on
incorporating the purpose of an informatics nurse. At the end of their
article, Staggers and Thompson address the revised definition of nursing
informatics which includes the participation of the patient, who is now
referred to as a client, the part of the informatics nurse, the ideas behind
this specialized field of informatics as well as the general nursing
profession, and the fundamentals that contribute to informatics itself. As a
conclusion, a description of what the role of an informatics nurse is to
clearly show the responsibilities of a maturing role in the nursing field.
