Robocalls
Consumer
Highlights:
For the past 28 months, we have been comparing the YouMail Robocall Index to the Consumer Confidence Index.
Because so many robocalls are from debt collectors, the thinking is that an increase in debt collection robocalls
might signal a decrease in consumer confidence, and conversely, a decrease in robocalls might signal an increase in
consumer confidence. For many months there has been some evidence of this pattern. A drop in robocall volume
has been matched by some increase (or lesser decrease) in consumer confidence. An increase in robocall volume
has been followed by a drop in confidence.
This month, there was an increase in robocalls and drop in consumer confidence, with this trend showing “strong-
ish” correlation for the second consecutive month.
