2. Pricing factors
• Covering capacity of paints varies quite considerably
depending on the following factors:
– Quality of paint

– Absorption of surface

– Weather conditions

– Height of work

– Skill of operative

– Method of application

3. Estimating paint
• In developing a unit rate for painting , it is usual to assume
values based on an area of 100m2
• Brushes, sand paper and other small tools etc are normally
allowed as a percentage over the material cost.
• Additional allowance is allow for the different stage of
building height.
– (SMM2, 2000, p127) Section U.1.4 work to ceilings and beams over
3.50m above floor (measured to ceiling level in both cases shall be so
described stating the height in further stages of 1.50m.
– Section U.2 No deduction shall be made for voids not exceeding
0.50m2.
• For narrow width, the time needed for same area as
compared to width above 300mm will increase considerably
– Not exceeding 150mm – increase by 100%
– >150mm <300mm wide – increase labour time by 50% 7
