What is Radar?

• RADAR = RAdio Detection And Ranging

• A radar system transmits electromagnetic energy and analyzes the energy reflected back to it
(by an object)
• Determines: the location (distance), the velocity, the direction, and the elevation (altitude) of
both stationary and non-stationary objects

Guided Wave Radar: How it Works?

• Microwave pulses travel down the probe

• Probe is suspended in the process media
• Part of the energy reflects back when reaching
media with different dielectric constant

Probe Length

• Probe length is GWR max measuring range

• Probe must hang freely
• Probe can be cut in field
– Transmitter configuration must always be updated with new probe length
– For flexible probes, slide weight upwards the wires before cutting
– For coax probes, use centering piece to support pipe and inner rod while cutting
– Refer to Reference Manual for further instructions

Centering Weight

HTHP, HP, Cryogenic and PTFE probes CANNOT be cut in field

18
Installation Considerations - Nozzles and Clearance

• Probe must not be in contact with tank wall or nozzle wall

 Minimum clearance – always check values in PDS!
• Avoid tall & narrow or reduced nozzles due to echo noise - unless unsing coaxial probe
• Long Stud - recommended to prevent the probe from contacting the nozzle
 Single flexible probes in tall and narrow nozzles

Dynamic Vapor Compensation (DVC)

• Density-based level (SG) can cause up to 30% error

• GWR is independent of density but saturated steam DK can cause up to 20% error
• DVC automatically compensates for varying steam DK
– Using a reference reflector on HTHP single rigid probe
– Reduces error rate to <2%
• Improves accuracy and safety and minimizes maintenance
• Applications include boiler drums, high pressure feed water heaters and steam separators

• 2 reflector options: 350 & 500mm – options R1 & R2
• 1 spacer in upper coax; more spacers in lower coax, depends on length
• New centering disc

Single Rigid Vapor Probe (4U) - Single rigid DVC-probe (Ø8/Ø13) for 2” pipe

Unique Sand Switch Setting Detects

Build up in your Vessel
• Rosemount 2140 can detect if there is sediment building up in your vessel
• This special setting detects state change between liquid and sediment, as opposed
to air and liquid

Now you can:

• Proactively schedule vessel clean-outs during

periods of downtime
• Reduce risk of equipment damage from sediment
being drawn into lines
• Optimize separator capacity and process efficiency

Why Choose a Vibrating Fork Switch Over a Mechanical?
• Reliable and easy to use technology
• Limited on-Site Maintenance; Fit and Forget
• No moving parts; nothing to freeze or jam
• Fast drip fork; quick response even in sticky
applications
Vs. • Virtually unaffected by process conditions
– Density or temperature changes
– Turbulence / splashing
– Coating
– Vapors

Customer considerations
• The customer will need to consider the following when specifying a
chamber

• Viscosity
– Nature of the vapour
• Waxing
– Process connection size
• Allow free flow of liquid
– Process temperature conditions
• May require lagging or heat trace

Best Practice Rosemount GWR in 9901 Chamber

• Probe style
– Rigid Single probe
• Consider flexible with weight for taller chambers and Side &
when head space is limited Bottom
– Exception liquefied gas > 40 bar -> 5300 transmitter with coax
probe
• Calculate the GWR probe length from the 9901 CC 275 mm
– Probe length (in cm) = CC + 48 cm (19”) (10.8”)
– This allows for transition zones and gap in bottom
– CF for Dynamic Vapor Compensation probe and chamber lengths CC
– For side and bottom CC + 10cm (4”) 175 mm
• Use a centering disc for single probes if probes > 1m (3,3
(6.8”)
ft)
– Order correct size for chamber CC
• Consolidate to chamber by GWR model code option and
SAME tag #
• C1 option (pre-configuration) is recommended

Rosemount 9901 Order cleaning

• Reasons for unclean orders:

 Rosemount 9901 does not fit with radar:
• Wrong probe length
• Wrong centering disc dimension
• Mismatched Instrument/ Process connection type
 Tagging info unclear - 9901/ GWR tag numbers do not match
• This delays order processing and extends lead time

Measurement Reliability
How does it work?
1. Constant stream of emitted microwaves
2. Microwave frequencies vary over a span
3. Difference betweeen received and emitted
microwave frequency is proportional to
the time-of-flight

Operating principle
• Distance = (Speed x Time) / 2

Eliptical Footprint of the 5600

• As most free radiating radars, the 5600 microwave footprint is eliptical
• The transmitter should therefore be rotated to avoid echo noise in the tank
atmosphere as much as possible
– Internal obstructions
– Rust, build-up or weldings on tank wall or nozzle
– The less echo disturbances, the more microwave to amplify the surface echo

Inclining the 5600 Parabolic Antenna
•Normally, antennas must be mounted Swivel
horizontally
•Parabolic Antenna is equipped with a
swivel to enable inclination of up to 2°
•Inclination is useful
– to attain a horizontal antenna angle
towards the surface
– with solids that most likely have a
sloping surface

to determine an optimal

Top-down, direct volume measurement

• Low frequency acoustic waves are emitted

from the antennas

• The device collect echoes from multiple points

to measure the exact volume

• Based on the returning echoes, a 3D mapping

visualization is created

• In the case of big silos, several scanners can be

connected together

Guided Wave Radar Advantages

Measures liquid and solids level directly

Measures Interface

Good fit for difficult tank geometry

Handles changing density / dielectrics / conductivity
Works in turbulent and low dielectric applications
Handles heavy vapors and condensation

No moving parts
Easy swap displacer & capacitance replacer

3
Guided Wave Radar Limitations

Agitators, blades, baffles may

interfere with probe installation

Highly viscous fluids and heavy coating

may impact measurement
Interface emulsion layers may interfere

In solids apps, pull forces need to be

evaluated in taller applications

Parameters Impacting GWR Measurement

• Foam applications
– Foam properties are very unpredictable
– GWR is more likely cut thru foam to
measure level/foam interface

• Interface applications
– Emulsion layers are very unpredictable
– A changing dielectric on top layer will
impact accuracy

Non-Contacting Radar
Best Practice

Emerson Confidential Emerson Confidential

12

6
Non-Contacting Radar Advantages

Measures liquids or solids

Top-down, direct measurement

Can be isolated from process by PTFE barriers or valves

Handles a variety of tanks geometries

Virtually unaffected by dust, vapor and turbulence

Handles changing density, dielectrics, conductivity,
temperature, pressure, pH, viscosity

No moving parts

Emerson Confidential 13

Non-Contacting Radar Limitations

Installation is a key success factor

Low DC and high turbulence

applications require more care

Foam is difficult to predict and can prevent

measurement from being made

Avoid heavy vapors with lower DC fluids

(Ex: anhydrous ammonia & liquid chlorine)
