Notes:
1. IN PROCESS: Includes in-class participation and contributions throughout the course, and may include
discussions, collaboration, large or small group activities, debriefs, case studies, research etc. In process work
will be assigned by the professor in class on an ongoing basis. There is no make-up provision for missed in-
process work.
2. QUIZZES: Quiz 1 and 2 will include true/false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer questions.
Quiz 1 occurs in week 7 and covers all content in weeks 1 through 6. Quiz 2 occurs in week 14 and covers
content in weeks 8 through 13.
3. ASSIGNMENT 1: Guidelines and expectations for Assignment 1 will be communicated to students well in
advance of the due date of week 8. The assignment is due no later than the established deadline (date and
time). Students may submit before the deadline. Late penalties apply to all assignments. Late assignments are
heavily penalised in keeping with the importance placed on deadlines within the ADR environment.
Assignments received on the due date but after the stated time are assessed a 20% penalty off the top (ie
prior to marking).
Assignments received during the first day following the due date are assessed a 40% penalty. Assignments
received two days following the due date are assessed an automatic zero (0). Calculation of time includes
weekends and holidays. All penalty calculations will be calculated off the top of the full marks available to be
earned. For example: if an assignment, due January 10 at 10:00 p.m., is received January 10 at 10:40 p.m. that
results in a 20% penalty deduction off the top. If that same assignment is received January 12, a mark of zero
will be assigned.
4. ASSIGNMENT 2 GROUP PRESENTATION: Guidelines and expectations for this assignment will be
communicated to students well in advance of the due date. Two presentation dates, in weeks 12 and 13, will be
available to students from which to choose. Please note that supporting fellow students is a key principle in our
classroom community. As such, students are expected to attend their colleagues' presentations. Students not in
attendance at a colleague's presentation will be assigned a 10% penalty (off the top) on their Term Assignment
mark. Students who are absent from another student's presentation due to an extenuating circumstance must
contact the professor prior to the missed presentation.
Note: this textbook will be shared with your Introduction to Mediation course.

Electronic Devices: Electronic devices should not cause distraction or disruption in the classroom. Laptops can be
used in class for relevant note taking and/or academic research purposes. In an effort to mitigate student disruption,
and to demonstrate mutual respect, please refrain from cell phone communication while in class. Please also ensure
that cell phones are turned to silent. In the case that a member of our classroom community deems it absolutely
necessary to communicate via cell phone text and/or voice conversation while in class (eg in the case of an
emergency), he/she should excuse him/herself from the classroom to communicate in the hallway or communicate at
scheduled break times.

recognize the legitimacy of difference as well as engage and support concepts of compatibility.
