MUST-HAVE TO
We must/ have to go now or we’ll be late. (We are obliged to –
obligation)
You must be back at noon. (Make sure you’ll be back----order)
You must see a doctor. (I strongly advise you ----- advice)
I have to be at work at 8: 30. (This is a rule----- rule)
You must not wear shorts at work. (It’s forbidden----- prohibition)
You don’t have to work overtime. (You aren’t obliged, You don’t
need to --- lack of obligation).
NOTE: We only use must in the simple present. In all other tenses
we use have to. He had to leave early yesterday.

CAN/COULD / BE ABLE TO --- MAY/ MIGHT


Ability
He can/is able to swim fast. ( has the ability – present)

He could play tennis well. ( had the ability in the past)

Requests

• You must be careful with electricity. (Strong advice )
• You should / ought to work harder. ( advice )
• You could talk to him about it. (suggestion)

We use the past progressive :


 For an action which was happening at a particular time in the past. I was reading a book
yesterday evening at 8 o’clock.
 For actions which were happening at the same time in the past . I was watching TV while
mom was cooking dinner.

Time expressions used with the past progressive:


Yesterday, last week, while, as, at ten o’clock yesterday morning, etc
