DEPARTMENT & PROGRAM: BS Mechanical Engineering

COURSE CODE-COURSE NAME: 314305 Heat & Mass Transfer CR: 3-0

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an Engineering Depth Course. These courses further strengthen the knowledge of heat & mass
transfer and develop the foundation for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and Power Plants course.
Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics courses offered in earlier semester’s lays foundation for this course.
At the end of this course, students will be able to design Heat Exchangers under various constraints.

PRE-REQUISITE: 214303 Thermodynamics II, 214401 Fluid Mechanics-I

CO-REQUISITE: Nil

TEXT AND MATERIALS:

Textbook:
1. Heat Transfer- A Practical approach by Y.A. Cengel
Reference Material:
1. Heat Transfer by J.P Holman

RELEVANT PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The course is designed so that students will achieve the PLOs:
1. PLO-1: Engineering Knowledge: An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and
engineering fundamentals and an engineering specialization to the solution of complex engineering
problems.
2. PLO-2: Problem Analysis: An ability to identify, formulate, research literature, and analyze
complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of
mathematics, natural sciences and engineering sciences.
3. PLO-3: Design/Development of Solutions: An ability to design solutions for complex engineering
problems and design systems, components, or processes that meet specified needs with appropriate
consideration for public health and safety, cultural, societal, and environmental considerations

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Explain and summarize the different parameters which are responsible for different modes of heat
and mass transfer.
2. Apply the basic laws to solve multilayer problems of heat and mass transfer in different geometries.
3. Analyze the different geometry of fins for a practical problem of heat transfer.
4. Design different types of heat exchangers under various constrains.

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS:
In engineering practice, an understanding of the mechanism of heat transfer is becoming increasingly
important since heat transfer plays a critical role in the design of vehicles, power plants, refrigerators,
electronic devices, buildings, and bridges among other things.
