Learning Central Focus

Lesson Plan Title: Video Lesson

Grade Level: 5th

Central Focus: Students will learn how to use the turtlehead method in order to solve
math problems.

Content Standard:
MGSE5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
(or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3-digit by 2-
digit factor.

Student Learning Goal(s)/ Objective(s):

Students will learn the process of the turtlehead method as well as strength their
multiplication rule foundation.

Skills/procedures:

The students will watch the video and then complete a multi-digit multiplication sheet.

Instructional Strategies and Learning Tasks

Launch: 5 Minutes
To get the students attention, I will start the class by taking role. I will start the lesson
by asking students about the multiplication rules. Also, I will do a quick review of the
math we learned the class before.

Instruction: 10 Minutes

I will take up the students’ math homework from the next day while answering any
questions that the students had about it. After answering their questions, I will introduce
the video lesson that they will be watching.

Structured Practice and Application: 10 Minutes

The student’s will watch the video lesson and take notes over the video. At the end of
the video there is an independent practice problem to see what they learned from the
video. I will wonder around the room to make sure all the students are on task.

Closure: 10 Minutes

I will end the lesson by going over the steps to the turtlehead method. I will address the
any questions the students have about the video. After all questions are answered, I
will hand out note cards at the last few minutes of class. The note card will have a 3-
digit by 2-digit math problem. The students will work independently in order to complete
their note card before class is up.
