The students exhibited background knowledge by reviewing what is needed for inferencing (background knowledge and context
clues). Students recalled their background knowledge for each clue in the mystery mail (the cow reminded one student of the
movie with Dumbo in it)
The activities during the class involved higher level thinking (Teacher read a book about Percy Jackson and used "what" and "why"
questions to check for understanding; Mystery mail was very engaging for the students and at the appropriate level for all learners.

Teacher uses and students understand high-level terminology (Inferencing, predicting text, schema). Students are asked probing
questions throughout the lesson (What is Mr. Bruner referring to?, What do you think about Mr. Bruner and Grover?, What can our
mystery trash tell us about her?, Why do you think it is a kid?). Students are using clues from the mystery mail to make inferences
about the person who wrote the letter. Students are very aware of the clues and are making keen observations (There are no male
teachers in 1st grade.; It is someone who likes cows.; It is a fancy cow so it is someone who likes fancy cows.; She is not a vegan.;
I think she might be pregnant.)
Teacher taught lesson across the curriculum (fractions were used to find out how many clues remained in the bag, ELAR was
mentioned when answering in complete sentences).
