Course Overview: The ability of computing community to generate and collect data has been
increasing rapidly. The widespread use of information technology in our lives has flooded us with a
tremendous amount of data. This explosive growth of stored and transient data has generated an urgent
need for new techniques and automated tools that can assist us in transforming this data into useful
information and knowledge. Data Mining has emerged as a multidisciplinary field that addresses this
issue.

This course discusses the techniques for preprocessing data before mining, and defines the concepts
related to data warehousing, on-line analytical processing (OLAP), and data generalization. It presents
methods for mining frequent patterns, associations, and correlations. It also describes methods for data
classification and prediction, and data-clustering approaches.

Course Outline:

Unit 1: Overview of Data Mining

 This unit provides some background on data objects and statistical concepts. It also discusses
the type of data to be mined and presents a general classification of data-mining tasks.
Unit 2: Data Preprocessing
 This unit introduces techniques for preprocessing data before mining. Concepts such as data
cleaning, data integration, data reduction, data transformation, and data discretization are
discussed.
Unit 3: Know about Data
 This unit discusses data objects and attribute types, basic statistical description of data, data
visualization and measuring data similarity and dissimilarity.
Unit 4: Overview of Data Warehousing and OLAP
 This unit provides a solid introduction to data warehousing, OLAP, and data generalization.
Unit 5: Mining Frequent Patterns, Associations, and Correlations
 This unit presents methods for mining frequent patterns, associations, and correlations.
Unit 6: Classification and Cluster Analysis
 This unit discusses methods such as decision tree induction, Bayesian classification, rule-based
classification for classification and basic concepts and methods of data clustering.

Special Instructions:

 Class Lectures are believed to be the most effective and reliable source of knowledge for this
course. Therefore, students are strongly encouraged to participate in all the classes attentively.
Students will not be allowed to enter into the classroom after 20 minutes of the starting time.
Moreover, You MUST have at least 70% class attendance to sit for the final exam.

 There is zero tolerance for cheating at EWU. Students caught with cheat sheets in their
possession, whether used or not used, &/or copying from cheat sheets, writing on the palm of
hand, back of calculators, chairs or nearby walls, etc. would be treated as cheating in the exam
hall. The only penalty for cheating is expulsion from EWU. For plagiarism, the grade will be
automatically become zero for that exam/assignment.

 There will be NO make-up for missed quiz(s) or exam(s). In case of extreme emergency, you
MUST inform me within 12 hours of the exam time. Failure to do so will mean that you are
trying to take UNFAIR advantage and you will be automatically disqualified.

 If you are sick, you should inform me within 24 hours and provide medical certificate
the next class you attend. Failure to do so will automatically disqualify you from giving
makeup exam.
