Design Shear Resistance (Beams: BS 8110)

The design value of the shear resistance of a concrete section with vertical shear reinforcement, Vmax is given
by;

Vmax = MIN{(0.8*(fcu)0.5*bv*d),(5*bv*d)}AAA

where

bv = breadth of section (for a flanged beam this is taken as the average width of the rib
below the flange.)

d = effective depth of section

IF

VEd,max ≤ Vmax

where

VEd,max = the maximum design shear force acting anywhere on the beam

THEN the shear design process can proceed.

ELSE the shear design process FAILS since the section size is inadequate for shear. No further shear calculations
can be carried out in the region under consideration and a warning is displayed.

BS 81101:1997 3.4.5.2

BB
is given by;
The design value of the shear resistance of a concrete section with no shear reinforcement, Vc

Vc = [0.79*{100*As/(bv*d)}⅓*(400/d)0.25 / γmc]*(bv*d)* (fcu/25)⅓

If value of fcu exceeds more than 40, it is taken as 40 in the above formula.

where

(400 /d)0.25 ≥ 0.67 (for members without shear reinforcement)

(400 /d)0.25 ≥ 1 (for members with shear reinforcement providing a design

shear resistance of ≥ 0.4 N/mm2)

0.15 ≤ 100*As/(bv*d) ≤ 3

where

As = area of longitudinal tension reinforcement which continues for a distance at least

equal to ‘d’ beyond the section being considered.

γmc = partial safety factor of concrete in shear strength without shear reinforcement =
1.25CC

IF

Vregion ≤ 0.5* Vc

Where Vregion = maximum design shear force in the particular region

THEN provide nominal shear reinforcement over the full length of the spanD

IF

0.5* Vc < Vregion ≤ (Vc + (0.4*bv*d))

THEN provide minimum shear reinforcement over the full length of the span as specified below;

(Asv/ sv)min,shear ≥ (0.4*bv) / (0.87 fyv)

where

Asv = total crosssection of links at the neutral axis, at a section

fyv = characteristic strength of links (fyv < 500 N/mm2)

sv = spacing of the links along the member

IF

(Vc + (0.4*bv*d)) < Vregion ≤ Vmax

THEN provide design shear reinforcement in the form of links

(Asv/ sv)design,shear ≥ (Vregion  Vc) / (0.87 fyv*d)
