Introduction

Over the centuries, people are multiplying in billions and modernization

and enlightenment has taken place but superstitious beliefs and Family traditions

still persist in our societies. The superstitions and family traditions continue to

passes through generation and maybe it will still continue until to the next era.

Superstitious belief is only a belief without evidence. It is designated to

those beliefs that result from ignorance and fear of the unknown. Every known

civilization that ever existed on the planet had something common in them; these

were the myths and superstitions that were a crucial part of their cultures. Many

superstitious practices are due to the false interpretations of the natural events.

Curiosity also with regard to things that are hidden or are still in the future plays a

considerable part, example, in the various kinds of divination. With this qualification

in mind, superstitions may be classified roughly as religious, cultural and personal.

Superstitions that belong to the cultural tradition are enormous in their variety.
Nearly all persons, in nearly times, have held, seriously, irrational beliefs

concerning methods of warding off ill or bringing good, foretelling the future, and

healing and preventing sickness and accidents.

While the family traditions are also a belief, it contains rituals and practices

of a family that are handed down from one generation to the next. Family traditions

almost always change when parents’ divorce. Due to changes in where kids live and

how they spend holidays and birthdays, traditions may change a little or a lot. Some

family traditions change over the years as your children get older. Good examples of

changes due to older kids are bedtime stories and family movie nights. Other

traditions change as your children grow up and have families of their own. Opening

gifts on Christmas morning and Easter morning egg hunts will take place at your

grown children's houses instead of taking place at your house. Sometimes families

review long-standing traditions and decide that one or more no longer fit their

lifestyle.

In the Philippines, owing to its strategic location in Asia, the Philippines have

seen many settlers and visitors from other places even before the advent of written

history. Naturally, these different peoples would carry with them their peculiar beliefs

and custom pertaining to phenomena that they could not explain at the time. These

beliefs would then be transmitted to their descendants via oral or written traditions.
Historians generally agree that aside from the original main settlers (the

Negritos, the Indonesians, and the Malays), the biggest influences of Filipino

superstitions would be the Indians, the Chinese, the Spanish, and the Arabs to a

lesser extent. This inter-mixing of different beliefs is the reason why we have so

many superstitions in the country even today.

This study will explore the practices of superstitious and family traditions in

this era. In addition, this research also assess and the families that researchers

about their insights regarding the topic. Furthermore, this research identified and

analyzed some of the factors that Filipino families are still practicing and adhering to

the beliefs of their forefathers.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Superstitions belief and Family traditions are still in practice today specially on

the rural areas. Superstitions beliefs have probably been present among us since

the beginning of time mainly: Friday the 13th: Bad Luck, Itchy Palm: Good Luck,

Walking under a Ladder: Bad Luck,Breaking a Mirror: Bad Luck. Also, there are

many family traditions that still in use today and the common is: Noche Buena, 41

days, rituals and etc.

According to the author Raquel Elekes (2012) from A timeless Memory,

Most superstitions have a history and can actually be explained. While Traditions

are customs or symbols that hold special meaning to each family or individual and

are passed down from generation to generation. They can begin at any time with

anyone from any background. It is up to each individual to decide whether or not

to carry on each Tradition, depending on what it means to them.

The researcher will conduct a study on some Filipino family especially in

urban areas. The researcher chose to focus the study on Urban areas discover

more about the practices of superstitions and family traditions in Filipinos. The

researchers want to explore about the famous superstitions and the family

traditions of Filipino that still exist today.

RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This page contains a thorough review of relevant literature and related

subject studies, foreign and local literature and related academic studies and

literature on current studies.

RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Literature

According to Karla Jordan (2016), a tradition is something you do regularly.

A superstition implies some sort of cause and effect. It is a belief, with no

evidence, that one act will cause or deter another. Believing that it is bad luck to

walk under a ladder is a superstition (you believe that the space under a ladder

has some magical properties that will cause bad things to happen if you enter it).

Throwing a pinch of spilled salt over your shoulder will avoid bad luck, for

example.

Kristance Harlow (2016) pointed that the raising children is confusing and

stressful, which is why new parents rely on traditional wisdom and the experiences

of others to help guide their decisions. But what one person considers traditional

knowledge, another may interpret as bizarre or irrational. In psychology, this

phenomenon is called magical thinking. Or, more commonly—superstitions.

When it comes to children, superstitions arise out of a need to exert control

over the randomness of life and the difficulty of parenting. Parents act on

superstitions to protect their offspring from the dangerous, unpredictable outside

world. But how real or superstitious a certain custom seems depends on personal

belief. Distinct cultural lenses are necessary to focus the blurry line between

superstition and age-old wisdom, as is the knowledge that many of these

traditions were born in times of high infant mortality and provided much-needed

comfort. Read on to learn about some of the most unique ways parents around

the world use superstitions.

Local Literature

According to Ron Siojo (2010) Philippine beliefs and superstition have

grown in number throughout the various regions and provinces in the country.

These beliefs have come from the different saying and superstitions of our

ancestors that aim to prevent danger from happening or to make a person refrain

from doing something in particular. These beliefs are part of our culture, for one

derives their beliefs from the influences of what their customs, traditions and

culture have dictated to explain certain phenomena or to put a scare in people.

Many Filipinos believed about the wrath of God as punishment for the sins of man

in the form of natural disasters (typhoons, floods, landslides, earthquakes, or

volcanic eruptions).
According to fat-like-buddha (2016) The Philippine culture has very strict

dating traditions. Both men and women need to follow traditional steps in which

the man is the pursuer. Women should not show her interest and they should play

hard to get as part of their tradition. This is a way for the man to show his interest

in her. As the Philippines has become more westernized, these traditions have

also slowly vanished. The people of the Philippines are chocked full of

superstitions. Weddings defiantly don’t elude the superstitious in the Philippines.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

The study will be anchored on the Opportunity Theory by Raquel Elekes

(2012) this theory was chosen and was considered appropriate because it is

essentially related and will clarify the scope about the topic.

This theory explains that every country and family has the Superstitions and

the Family traditions. According to Raquel Elekes (2012), when a family comes

together in celebration, they share and pass on special ones to each new

member. These are our Traditions, our Customs and sometimes, passed on from

generation to generation, our Superstition. When sitting down to a plan a Wedding

these are often the very first things discussed. Some are automatic like finding

something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.

She says that the Superstitions are still actually applied today. We, as

people have evolved and grown since these were put into practice. What will

happen if we don`t do certain things on our own Wedding day? Will bad things

actually happen to us? She says it is all a matter of what you believe and how

much history we know. This is where things become interesting. Most

superstitions have a history and can actually be explained. While on the family

traditions, she says that the Traditions are customs or symbols that hold special

meaning to each family or individual and are passed down from generation to

generation. They can begin at any time with anyone from any background. It is up

to each individual to decide whether or not to carry on each Tradition, depending

on what on what it means to them.

In addition, Raquel Elekes believes that some we heard about but are not

always sure why we have to do them. What will happen if we choose NOT to?

Statement of the Problem

This research is deemed to assess the Superstitions belief and Family traditions

that still exist today.

Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following sub-problems:

1.) What are the superstitious beliefs the selected families in Las Pinas City?

2.) What are the Family traditions that are still observed of the selected families in

Las Pinas City?

3.) How does the superstitious belief affect the lives of the participants?

4.) How do family traditions affect the lives of the participants?

ASSUMPTION

Superstitious belief and Family traditions are still present among Filipino

families since the beginning of time and have been passed on through the

generations, culturally shared and transmitted.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The study is limited to the following:

traditions on the daily lives of the participants. It also emphasizes the superstition

and family traditions and its significance to the participants. is all about to the

participants. Only the superstitious belief and family traditions of the selected families

are being analyzed in the study.

Significance of the Study

traditions to the Filipino lives. With this, we may provide certain correlation

regarding its practices and beliefs of Filipino people that still in practice today.

The COLLEGE STUDENTS. This research can help college student, the

study will serve as their additional knowledge and idea about the superstitious beliefs

and family tradition. In some point some college students wants to believe in this

superstition.

The College Students studying Anthropology. A Filipino student studying

anthropology would benefit this research because of how much information it has

regarding various Filipino beliefs. Although the Philippines is very diverse in culture,

most of these cultures (like most other beginning cultures) are influenced by very

powerful spiritualistic ways.

The FILIPINO FAMILY. Filipinos are very superstitious. The beliefs have

great influence in their day to day life. Many people still believe that these

superstitious beliefs can help them cope with life; although many new generations

aren't affected by the beliefs and consider them only part of the old ways.
The SPORTS MEN OR PEOPLE WHO ARE VERY SPORTY. It is very

helpful to the person who is very sporty especially when that person believes in real

luck. He or she can help her or his team to win because of this superstition. And he

or she takes this superstition as opportunities to gain with flying color.

The FORTUNE-TELLERS. This is one who will benefit our research paper because

when people are more closely to believe to superstition, we can say that people

can more likely to go to a fortune-teller so that they will know what will happen for

them in the future, and because of superstition they will believe to the fortune-teller.

The FUTURE RESEARCHERS, this will serve as their guide in studies they will

conduct in the future that is related to the topic at hand; it may also serve as a

comparative measure for them whether there is a change on some of the gathered

data or even with the results of the analysis of data.

CHAPTER II

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the researcher discusses about the research design,

population sampling, respondents of the study, research instrument, validation of

instrument, data gathering procedure and the statistical analysis of data.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The present study tackles the superstitious belief that the Filipino families still in

believe and the family traditions that they still practice in the present. Therefore, the

research design used in this study is qualitative method of research. According to

Creswell (1994), Qualitative Method of research is defined as an inquiry process of

understanding a social or human problem, based on building a complex, holistic

picture, formed with words, reporting detailed views of informants, and conducted a

natural setting. It involves philosophical assumptions that guide the direction of the

collection of analysis of data and qualitative approaches in many cases in the

research process. According to the definition, qualitative method are methods that

do not involve measurement or statistics. It focuses to gain understanding of

underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations and allow participants in the interview

to supply answer in their own words.

PARTICIPANTS OF THE STUDY

Since it is generally impossible to study an entire population of Filipinos

families, the researchers only choose five (5) families conducted in the City of Las

Piñas but the researcher must keep in mind that the ideal scenario is to test all the

individuals to obtain reliable, valid and accurate results.

The table below shows the population information`s as the researchers was

conducted their research in the city of las pinas.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The research instrument that the researcher`s used is the interview as a

popular research instrument among collections for this study. Interview will give a

directly data and generates answer faster and it will be conducted face to face.

However, the researchers also made questionnaire checklist to gather the needed

data for the study and answered by the respondents. In the preparation of the

instrument, the researchers considered a good designing data collection and

relevant. For instance, statement describing the superstition and family traditions as

still persisted in societies.

Validation of instrument

The expert faculty members the Validated interview. Their corrections and

suggestions will be incorporated in the draft for the next stage of validation.

Another ten (10) families located in Las pinas city will be interview and will be

asked to answer the questionnaire. Their responses will be tested for reliability
Procedure of Data Gathering

The first step before going to the testing proper is to make a request letter.

Upon approval, the researchers retrieve the request letter from the Dean of the

College of Education, Dr. Emerlyn Managuas. The study was then conducted for 2

weeks for the interview of five (5) families with documentation as part of the study.

After collecting the all the data of the interview, the researchers made compendium

list as a result of the study.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

CONCLUSIONS AND GAINED SIGHTS

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The researchers conducted a research to some family participants to assess

on what their insights and present practices are regarding on the topic. The analysis

of the results of study are based of compendium. They made a compendium list on

the results of the study.

The study shows a results that there are still families who believes in

superstitious and a higher numbers of families who still practice family traditions.

Among on five family participants, there are three families who believes and two

who no longer believe in superstitious. On the family traditions, study shows that all

of the participants still practice the family traditions.

Superstitious beliefs and Family Traditions and the effects of it unto the lives

of the participants are already having a reliable results base on the interview. The

researchers also made a compendium list regarding on what could be the

superstitious beliefs and family traditions that will need to eliminate and may still

continue to practice.
Eliminated Superstitious beliefs

Since a superstitious beliefs is just a product of mind and a beliefs without

evidence, it is better to just remove it in the history and make it stop to transmit it

from generation to generation. It is much better that the society will focus on things

that is meaningful. The following are list of Superstitious beliefs that will need to

eliminate:

Food must not bring to the other house-There is nothing wrong with sharing

food.

Don’t walk under the ladder-Who wants to be responsible for stumbling and

knocking a carpenter off his perch?

Black cats crossing your path -Americans collectively keep more than 81

million cats as pets. So why keep a black cat out of your path?

Break a Mirror- Seven years is a long time to be unlucky, which may be why

people have come up with counter-measures to free themselves after breaking a

mirror.

Friday the 13th- "If anything bad happens to you on Friday the 13th, the two will be

forever associated in your mind," said Thomas Gilovich, a psychologist at Cornell

University. "
Family Traditions must preserve

According to the researchers, their analysis to the five family participants

regarding on family traditions shows a results that they still practice the family

traditions. The good news is that all of the children of the family are still practicing

the “opo/po’ and “pagmamano” but despite on that, there are participants who are

rarely practice family meal simultaneously.

The following are Family Traditions base on research of the researchers

that will need to establish and will practice more on the family up to the society:

 Wedding

 Christmas (Noche Buena)

 New year

 Birthday

 Family Meal

 Family day

 forty (40) days

 All souls day

 Father`s day/Mother`s day

 Attending Mass every Sunday

 Pasyon (Mahal na araw)

 Saying po/opo

 Mano(bless)

 Curfew

 Good Manner
CONCLUSION AND GAINED INSIGHTS

The researchers of this study has concluded that superstitious beliefs must

need to eliminate as a transmitted beliefs since it was only a non-proven and just a

product of mind. Instead, they would like to implement more the family traditions on

the society. According to the study of the researchers, the effects of family traditions

to the participants are all advantages: reinforce the inclusion of their family, and it

serves as their bonding, serves as a nutrient of their family, inherits to their

ancestors and strengthen the unity and love of their family. As the results gained to

the study, the possible purpose and use of the study is to conduct a seminar

regarding on what could be to eliminate and to preserves.

The study gives insights to the researchers that there must be things that

Filipino families need to eliminate in lives and we must focus on things that will

enrich and serve as inclusion to their beloved families.

RECOMMENDATIONS

In view of the findings of the study, the following recommendations were

submitted for further study:

1. Superstitious beliefs must need to eliminate as a transmitted beliefs since it was

only a non-proven and just a product of mind.

2. The family traditions must implement more to the families.

3. As the results gained to the study, the possible purpose and use of the study is

to conduct a seminar regarding on what could be to eliminate and to preserves.

4. A copy of this study shall be forwarded to the responsible authorities and

determine whether improvements were made by conducting a follow-up study

after 2-3 years.
