Legenda Danau Toba Versi Bahasa Inggris

Once upon a time there was a prosperous village in a far away island called Sumatra. In northern part of
the island, lived a farmer whose name was Toba. He lived alone in a hut by a small forest. He worked on
his farmland to grow rice and vegetables that he sells to local market. Once day he wanted to catch some
fish so he went to a river and fished there. He was very surprised when he got a big fish. The fish was as
big as human being. Soon he went home and put the fish in his kitchen. He planned to cook the fish for
his dinner that night. When he got to his house that afternoon he took a bath. Then as he walked into his
bedroom after taking a bath Toba was very shocked. Do you want to know what happened?

There stood in his living room a very beautiful girl. The girl greeted him nicely. For a moment Toba was
speechless. When he could control his emotion he asked her.

‘Who are you? What’s your name? Why suddenly you are here in my house?’

‘Pardon me if I surprised you Mr. Toba, but you took me here. I was the fish that you caught in the river.
Now that I become a human being again, I would like to thank you and I will be your servant to express
my thankfulness’

‘Were you the fish?’

‘Yes, I was the fish. Look at your kitchen’.

Toba immediately rushed to his kitchen and the fish was nowhere to be seen. He saw some gold coins
instead.

‘Whose coins are these? Why there are some coins here?’

‘Those coins are mine. As I changed into human being my scales changed into gold coins’
‘Ok you can live here and work for me. Your room is over there’

‘Thank you very much Mr. Toba’

Since that day the beautiful girl lived in Toba’s house. Since she was very beautiful Toba fell in love with
her and not long after that they got married. The girl married to Toba on one condition that he would
never tell anybody about her past. Toba agreed to the condition. Several months later Toba’s wife
delivered to a baby boy. Their son was healthy. Soon he grew up into a handsome boy. Toba named him
Samosir. Unfortunately Samosir was a lazy boy. He did not want to work at all. When his father worked
hard in his rice field and farm, Samosir just slept. When he was awake he talked a lot and he ate a lot.
Toba was very disappointed with his son’s nature. He hoped that one day Samosir would change into a
diligent boy. Day in and day out but Samosir never changed.

Toba used to go to his farm and rice field early in the morning. Then at midday his wife would bring him
food. They used to eat lunch at their farm. As he was a teenager Toba and his wife tried to change his
behavior. They ordered Samosir to bring food for his father for lunch while her mother stayed at home to
do household chores. But Samosir never did his duty well. He always woke up very late. He woke up after
midday. Then one day his mother forced him to bring the food.

‘Sam, wake up. Go to the farm and bring the food for your father. He must be very tired and hungry
now’.

But Mom, I am tired and hungry too’

‘What makes you tired? You just wake up. Go now. You father needs the food’

Toba reluctantly went to the farm. But he did not go to the farm immediately. He stopped somewhere in
the street and ate the food. It was already late afternoon when he got to the farm. His father was
disappointed. Then he was angry as he realized that his son had eaten his food. He said sarcastically.

‘O, you are stupid lazy boy. You are son of a fish!’
Samosir was hurt. He went home right away and as he got home he told his mother about his father’s
words. Samosir’s mother was shocked. She was also deeply hurt.

‘O Toba. You break your promise so I cannot live with you here anymore. Now you have to accept to
consequence of what you did. Samosir, now go to the hill, find the tallest tree and climb it’

‘Why mom? What will happen?’

‘Just do it, never ask any question. Good bye’

As soon as she finished saying that suddenly the weather changed. Sunny day suddenly turned into
cloudy day. Not long after that the rain poured heavily. The rain last for several days. Consequently the
area was flooded. The whole area became a big lake. Then it was called Lake Toba and in the middle of
the lake there is an island called Samosir Island. Meanwhile Toba’s wife disappeared.

Timun Emas

Long time ago, lived an old women named Mbok Sirni. She lived by herself because her husband had
long passed away and she had no children. Every day, she prayed so God would give her a child. One
night, when she was praying, a giant passed her house and heard her pray. “I can give you a child on one
condition,” the giant said to Mbok Sirni, “You must give the child back to me when it is six years old.”
Mbok Sirni was so happy; she did not think about the risk of losing the child later and agreed to take the
giant’s offer. The giant then gave her a bunch of cucumber seeds. “Plant it around your house.” The giant
then left without saying anything else. In the

morning, Mbok Sirni planted the seeds. The seeds grew within mere days, and blossomed plentifully.Not
longer after that, a big golden cucumber grew from plants. Carefully, Mbok Sirni plucked the golden
cucumber and carried it home. With caution and care, she sliced the cucumber. She was very surprised
to see a beautiful baby girl inside the cucumber. She then named the baby Timun Emas (it means Golden
Cucumber).

Years passed by and Timun Emas has grew to become a lovely and beautiful little girl. She was also smart
and kind. Mbok Sirni loved her very much. But she kept thinking about the time the giant would take
Timun Emas away from her. One night, Mbok Sirni had a dream. In order to save Timun Emas from the
giant, she had to meet the holy man who lived in Mount Gundul. The next morning, Mbok Sirni took
leave of Timun Emas to go to Mount Gundul. The holy man then gave her four little bags, each one
containing cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and shrimp paste. “Timun Emas can use these to protect
herself,” said the holy man to Mbok Sirni.

A few days later, the giant came to see Mbok Sirni about her promise. “Mbok Sirni! Where is Timun
Emas?” shouted the giant. “My daughter, take these bag with you. It can save you from the giant. Now,
run through the back door,” said Mbok Sirni. But the giant saw Timun Emas running to the woods. The
giant was angry. Starved and enraged, he rushed toward Timun Emas. Mbok Sirni tried to stop him, but
the giant was unstoppable.

The giant was getting closer and closer, so Timun Emas opened the first bag she got from Mbok Sirni.
Inside the bag were cucumber seeds. She threw the seeds, and instantly they grew into large cucumber
field. But the giant ate them all, giving him more strength. As the giant was getting close, Timun Emas
took the second bag with needles inside and spilled the content behind her. The needles turned into
bamboo trees, sharp and thorny. The giant’s body was scratched and bled. “Aaargh, I’ll get you, Timun
Emas!” shouted the giant as he tried to get himself out from the bamboo field. He made it and still
chasing Timun Emas.

Timun Emas then reached the third bag and spilled the salt inside. The ground which the salt touched
turned into a deep sea. The giant almost drown and had to swim to cross the sea. After some time, he
managed to get out from the water. Timun Emas saw the giant coming, so she reached for the last bag.
She took the shrimp paste and threw it. The shrimp paste became a big swamp of boiling mud. The giant
was trapped in the middle of the swamp. The mud slowly but surely drowned him. Helpless, he roared
out, “Help! Heeeeelp…!” Then the giant drown and died. Timun Mas then immediately went home.
Since then, Timun Emas and Mbok Sirni live happily ever after.***

The Legend Of Malin Kundang

Long time ago, in a small village near the beach in West Sumatera, lived a woman and her son, Malin
Kundang. Malin Kundang’s father had passed away when he was a baby, and he had to live hard with his
mother.

Malin Kundang was a healthy, dilligent, and strong child. He usually went to the sea to catch fish, and
brought it to his mother, or sold it in the town.

One day, when Malin Kundang was sailing as usual, he saw a merchant’s ship which was being raided by
a small band of pirates. With his brave and power, Malin Kundang defeated the pirates. The merchant
was so happy and asked Malin Kundang to sail with him. Malin Kundang agreed.

Many years later, Malin Kundang became a wealthty merchant, with a huge ship, loads of trading goods,
many ship crews, and a beautiful wife. In his journey, his ship landed on a beach. The villagers reconigzed
him, and the news ran fast in the town: Malin Kundang became a rich man and now he is here. His
mother, in deepful sadnees after years of loneliness, ran to the beach to meet her beloved son again.

When the mother came, Malin Kundang, in front of his well dressed wife, his crews and his own
gloriness, denied to meet that old, poor and dirty woman. For three times she begged Malin Kundang
and for three times yelled at him. At last Malin Kundang said to her “Enough, old woman! I have never
had a mother like you, a dirty and ugly peasant!” Then he ordered his crews to set sail.

Enraged, she cursed Malin Kundang that he would turn into a stone if he didn’t apologize. Malin
Kundang just laughed and set sail.

In the quiet sea, suddenly a thunderstorm came. His huge ship was wrecked and it was too late for Malin
Kundang to apologized. He was thrown by the wave out of his ship, fell on a small island, and suddenly
turned into stone.

Garlic & Onion

Long time ago in a village lived a family consisting of father, mother and a beautiful teenage girl named
Bawang Putih (garlic). They are a happy family. Although the father Bawang Putih (garlic) traders only
normal, but they are harmonious and peaceful living. But one day the mother Bawang Putih (garlic) sick
and eventually died. Bawang Putih (Garlic) very similarly in his father’s sorrow.

Live in the village is also a widow who has a child named Bawang Merah (Onion). Since the mother’s
Bawang putih died, Bawang Merah mother often went to the Bawang Putih house. He often brings food,
Bawang Merah help tidy the house or just keep Bawang Putih and shoot the father. Finally Bawang Putih
father thinking that it may be best if he just married mother Bawang Merah, Bawang Putih not so lonely
anymore.

Then Bawang Putih’s father and Bawang Merah’s mother married. Originally Bawang Merah mother’s
and Bawang Merah is very good to Bawang putih. However, the nature of long run they began to look
authentic. They often bristle Bawang Putih and gave her a job if the father of Bawang Putih are going to
trade. Bawang Putih must do all homework, while Bawang Merah’s mother and Bawang Merah just sit
only. Of course Bawang white father did not know about it, because Bawang Putih never tell to her
father.

One day Bawang Putih’s father fell ill and then died. Since that time Bawang Merah’s mother and
Bawang merah more powerful and haphazardly against to Bawang putih. Bawang Putih almost never
rest. She should wake up before dawn, to prepare the water bath and breakfast for Bawang Merah and
her mother. Then he had to feed the livestock, watering thegarden and wash clothes to the river. But he
still must iron the clothes, tidy house, and many other jobs. But Bawang Putih always happy to do the
work, because she hopes one day the stepmother will love such as her child own.

This morning as usual Bawang Putih bring basket containing the clothes in the river will wash. She sang
with the small paths in the forest edge of a small regular she walk. Today the weather was very bright.
Bawang Putih immediately wash all the dirty clothes brought. She fell very happy, Bawang putih not
realize that one of the clothes have been brought out flow. Unfortunately the shirt is a lovely shirt her
stepmother.

When the think that, clothes’s stepmother was too far away. Bawang Putih, try the river to search for it,
but did not succeed to find it. With the despair he returned to the house and told to his mother.

The Legend of Batu Menangis

In a village, there lived a mother and her daughter. Her daughter was very beautiful, but she had very
bad behavior. She was very lazy to help her mother work. Every day the girl was just spending her time
by beautifying herself and admiring her beauty in the mirror, while her mother had to work hard to earn
a living to support their life. Besides lazy, she was also very spoiled. She always asked to be given
something and if she wasn’t, she would cry. Of course, that situation made her mother sad but somehow
she still loved her daughter.

One day, the girl asked her mother to buy new gown for her. At first, her mother rejected her request
because she did not have enough money. Nevertheless, because her mother was forced to obey her
request, she fulfilled her daughter request. Then her mother asked her daughter to accompany her to
the market. “All right, but I do not want to walk beside you. You should walk behind me, I’m embarrassed
if others see me “she said. Although her mother was sad, she continued to obey her request. So they
went to the market to buy gown for her daughter. The girl was walking in front while her mother was
walking behind her and carrying a basket on their way to the market.

Although they were a mother and a daughter, they looked very different. As if they did not come from
the same family. Even, they looked like a boss and a maid. How couldn’t be like that? Her daughter
dressed up beautifully and wore a very nice gown. While her mother looked old and wore very simple
dress.

On the way to the market, a man greeted them. “Hey pretty girl, is that your mother?” asked the man.
“Of course she is not. She is my servant, “said the girl. His mother was sad to hear her answer. But she
was silent though her heart was crying. Along the street the beautiful girl kept being asked by people
about his mother. But the girl always said that the old woman behind her was her assistant.

Finally, the mother could not bear any longer to hear the answer that comes out of her daughter mouth.
Then she prayed to god “Lord, punish this ungrateful child,” she said. Immediately the girl’s legs turned
to be stone. The change came slowly from her feet up to her head. Seeing his legs turned to be a stone,
the girl screamed “ohhhh no! What happened to my legs?” She shouted. Then she cried and realized
that she had done something bad to her mother. “Mom,! Forgive me. Please forgive me! “She cried in
panic. The girl kept crying and crying but it was too late. The whole body eventually became a stone. Her
mother was sad to see what happened to her daughter but she could not do anything else. Although she
had become the rock completely, people can still see her tears. That was why the stone named Batu
Menangis.

Roro Jonggrang

Long time ago, there was a kingdom named Prambanan. All the people of Prambanan lived peacefully.
But then, Prambanan kingdom was attacked and occupied by the Pengging kingdom. Prambanan then
was ruled by Bandung Bondowoso of Pengging kingdom. He was a mean king. He also had great
supernatural power. His soldiers were not only humans, but also genies.

The king of Prambanan had a beautiful daughter named Loro Jonggrang. Bandung Bondowoso fell in love
with her and wanted to marry her. “You’re very beautiful. Would you be my queen?” asked Bandung
Bondowoso. Loro Jonggrang was shocked. She didn’t like Bandung Bondowoso because he was a mean
person. She wanted to refuse, but she afraid that Bandung Bondowoso would be angry and endangered
the people of Prambanan. Then, she came up with a plan. “If you want to marry me, you have to build a
thousand temples for me in just one night,” said Loro Jonggrang. “What? That’s impossible!” said
Bandung Bondowoso. But he did not give up. He consulted with his advisor. “Your Majesty can asked the
genies to help built the temples,” said the advisor.

So, Bandung Bondowoso summoned his entire genies soldier and commanded them to help him built a
thousand temples. The genies worked in unbelievable speed. Meanwhile, Loro Jonggrang heard from her
servant that the building of a thousand temples was almost finished. She was so worried. But again, she
came up with a great idea. She asked all of her servants to help her. “Please prepare a lot of straw and
mortar. Please hurry up!” said Loro Jonggrang. “Burn the straw and make some noise pounding the
mortar, quickly.” All those servants did what Loro Jonggrang ordered them; burning straw and pounding
the mortar, making the genies think that the sun is going to rise.

“It’s already dawn. We have to go,” said the leader of the genies to Bandung Bondowoso. All the genies
immediately stopped their work and ran for cover from the sun, which they afraid of. They didn’t know
that the light was from the fire that burning the straw, not from the sun.

Bandung Bondowoso can’t stop the genies from leaving. He was angry. He knew Loro Jonggrang had just
tricked him. “You cannot fool me, Loro Jonggrang. I already have 999 temples. I just need one more
temple. Now, I will make you the one-thousandth temple.” He pointed his finger to Loro Jonggrang and
said some mantras. Magically, Loro Jonggrang’s body turned into stone. Until now, the temple is still
standing in Prambanan area, Central Java. And the temple is called Loro Jonggrang temple.

The Bitter Tongue

Is exactly the story of a prince named Serunting Sumidang area. Offspring of the giant named Princess
Grace, dikhabarkan tangles with the law named Aria cliffs. Because this is a sense of hostility envy
Serunting against Aria cliffs.

It is said, they have adjoining paddy fields separated by trees. The fungus grows under the trees. Fungus
Aria cliff facing towards the fields to grow into the metal gold. While overlooking fields Serunting
mushrooms grow into plants that are not useful.

The feud that one day had turned into a brawl. Realizing that Serunting more powerful, Arya Climbing
stop the fight. He tried to find another way to beat his opponent. He persuaded his brother (wife of
Serunting) to tell him secret magic Serunting.

According to her sister Aria cliffs, is the magic of Serunting vibrating reed plants (although not with the
wind). Capitalize on that information, Aria Cliff Serunting challenging to fight back. Deliberately he
plunged his spear on the vibrating reed. Serunting fell and was seriously injured. Feeling betrayed his
wife, he went rogue.

Serunting went to Mount Siguntang imprisoned. By Hyang Mahameru, he promised supernatural

powers. The condition is that he should be imprisoned under the bamboo tree until the entire body is
covered by a bamboo leaf. After nearly two years of meditation, the leaves had covered his entire body.
As promised, he finally received supernatural powers. The miracle is that any sentence or word that
comes out of his mouth would turn into a curse. Because of this he was given the nickname the bitter
tongue.

He intends to return to his native Sumidang area. On the way home that he was testing his power. Shores
of Lake Ranau, met lying cane trees that had turned yellow. The bitter tongue said, "be a rock." So sure
enough, the plant was turned into stone. So, he condemns every person whom he met on the banks of
the River Jambi to be a stone.
However, he did have good intentions. Commonly known, he changed Serut barren hill into the woods.
At Karang Agung, is told he meets an elderly couple who wishes to have a child toothless baby

The Life of Princess Kembang Dadar || Palembang Folklore

Thousand years ago, in Southern Sumatera, there were two kingdoms that were always in fight. The
kingdoms had never been in peace since they were built. There were always problems happened
between the kingdoms. Those kingdoms’ name were Hulu kingdom and Hilir kingdom. One afternoon, in
a bright day, the king of Hilir kingdom together with his trusted people walked to one building called
Pendopo. There, in Pendopo, the king and his people were planning to have an important meeting
discussing about their plan

“Are we really ready?” asked the king to open the discussion

The commander of the kingdom stood then bend to show some respect to the king and the he said

“My majesty, our troop are ready to deploy!” The commander said in a very promising voice and his
hand pointed at the hundreds of soldiers that were training at the palace’s yard at that time.

“Hmm” said the king. He, then, walked outside the Pendopo to look how well his soldiers training by
himself. Behind him, the commander with all his pride told the king that Hilir kingdom would surely won
the battle. He told the king that the soldiers were more than ready to play the sword and spears in the
bloody arena. The king look amazed by what his commander said then he raised his hand in front of the
training soldiers as a sign to stop from what they were doing.

“My dear soldiers!” said the king proudly “I have seen with my own eyes how well and brave you are. I
have also seen with my own eyes how ready you are to take the glory and take whatever is ours. The
victory is there awaiting us. We shall be ready. Tomorrow! We shall march to the Hulu kingdom and show
them who we really are”

“Booyah… Booyah…Booyah!!!” exclaimed the flock of soldiers

Tomorrow morning, at dawn, the commanders, and the soldiers were set off to Hulu kingdom using a big
ship. They brought all their sword and spears and they also brought with them a lot of foods. They were
sailing the sea in silent, they tried not to advertise their presence to their enemy. Meanwhile, in the Hulu
kingdom, the watcher soldier that was in duty saw something suspicious in the sea. He then hurriedly
run to the kingdom to tell the kingdom. The King Hulu smile as he heard what his soldier told him.
“Prepare the soldiers. We should give them warm welcome” said the king Hulu. Then hundreds of
soldiers were marching to face the Hilir troops. The Hulu’s soldiers outnumbered the Hilir’s soldiers. The
Hulu kingdom actually had long known about this attack and had prepared to deal with it. When Hilir’s
soldiers arrived at the border of the Hilir’s Kingdom, they saw nothing and they thought that their plan
to given their enemy a sudden attack went successfully.

They then walked to the forest heading to the Hulu’s palace but before they even saw the top of the
palace building, suddenly the Hulu’s soldiers ambush appeared and attacked them. The number that
they never expected before made the Hilir’s shocked and after the intense battle between those two
kingdoms, the Hilir’s soldiers did not get what they wish to get when they were training the day before.
They were defeated.

The Hulu’s soldiers were shouting in victory. The commanders from the enemy kingdom had all been
executed and so had the soldiers. They headed home in pride. Meanwhile, in Hilir’s kingdom, the king
was awaiting in worry. It had been three days since the day they left the kingdom and they yet gave him
any news. The king knew that his soldiers did not gain the victory. Then he gathered all his commanders
and also ministers to discuss about the problem.

“We haven’t yet hear any news from our soldiers in the arena. We shall not expect anything from them
now. What should we do now? I am sure that they are laughing at us now and who knows that they may
prepare for an attack now. What we should do now?” asked the king in a bitter voice

All people that were in the room said nothing. They were confused what they should say. They were
acting as if they were thinking for the solutions while in fact they were all scared of the king’s anger.
Then, suddenly…

“Father” a voice heard among the people and it is the voice of a very beautiful princess.

“Yes my dear daughter” answered the king

“Why it is not me coming to Hulu’s kingdom to revenge our loses” said her

All people in the room looked at the princess in shocked. Never had they thought that the princess that
they knew would say such thing. And never had they known that the princess had such bravery in her
heart.
“Never in my thought would I let you go there my dear Princess Kembang Dadar” said the king firmly

“But I can assure you that what I would do will give the king victory and even peace” said the princess

“I still say no because…”

“Father” the princess walked toward their father and took his father’s hands “I promise, nothing bad will
happen to me. You can send your soldier with me but please just send two soldiers because I have a
plan.”

“What is it?” asked the king

Princess Kembang Dadar then explained what her plan to all people in the room. The king listen to the
plan carefully and then he nodded his head as the princes asked for his permission. Then, the next
following day, the princess along with two soldiers set off to the Hilir Kingdom. The princess was
disguised into a vegetable seller while the soldiers were disguised as farmers. As the princess reached
the village and began to sell the vegetables all eyes of the people in the village were on her. Then the
news was quickly spread until it reached the Hilir’s king ears. The King of Hilir that hadn’t yet married
found it interesting and asked his soldiers to take the vegetable’s seller to the palace.

As the vegetable seller was taken to the palace, the king was amazed to the beauty of the vegetable
seller. He fell something that he never felt before though he had seen a lot of beautiful girls from
another kingdoms before. But this one was very special to the king. Then the king was directly asking the
vegetable seller whether she wanted to marry him or not. The vegetable seller that was actually Princess
Kembang Dadar was smiling. She was happy as her plant went successfully. She was happy as her plan
that she never told to her father would happen.

The vegetable seller then came closer to the prince, and she whispered something to prince’s ears. And
as if being hypnotized, the prince agreed on what the princess said. Then they got married, and since
then the kingdom Hulu and Hilir had never been in conflict ever again.

What did the princess whisper? The princess whispered that she was actually the daughter of the Hulu’s
king and she would only marry the prince if he stopped attacking her kingdom and as return her
kingdom would no the same thing
