THE WEST BENGAL UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES

REGULATIONS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING

1. Eligibility Criteria for Admission:

 The candidates must qualify in Joint Entrant Examination (JENPAUH) & candidates must not
be below 17 years of age on the 31" December of the year of admission.
 The minimum educational requirements shall be a pass in:
10+2 higher Secondary Examination with Physics, Chemistry. Biology. English (PCBE).
Or
Senior School Certificate Examination (10+ 2) or Pre-Degree Examination (10+ 2) with Physics,
Chemistry, Biology. English (PCBE).
Or
An examination considered equivalent by the University with Physics. Chemistry. Biology. English
(PCUE) after 12 years of schooling.
 Only female candidates who have passed HS Examination with PCBE and obtained pass marks
in each subject. Percentage of marks to be eligible will depend upon the decisions of Central
Selection Committee (Nursing) &/ not less than INC criteria.
 Candidates must be permanent resident of West Bengal for admission in Government Nursing
Colleges.
 Only rank holders of JENPAUH Examination are eligible for the course.
 All eligible and willing merit listed candidates have to go though the counseling process.
2. Statutory reservation:
Statutory reservation of seats, as will be decided by the Government of West Bengal from time to time,
will be strictly observed.
3. Admission & Enrolment of Students:
Admission of candidates to affiliated colleges of the University shall be permitted on condition
of fulfillment of eligibility criteria as stated in the clause 1 of this regulation may be determined
by the Academic Council of the University from time to time.
 Admission to the University and its affiliated institutions shall be permitted in accordance to the
provisions provided by the Statute of this University, save and except the reserved seats for
sponsored candidates of other state governments.
 A candidate shall be considered as enrolled after she is admitted by the Principal/ Dean,
Director, Head of the Depatrment (Nursing) of the affiliated college or institution and has paid
all the prescribed fees.
 A candidate once enrolled in a college or institution shall be considered a student of that college
until her name is struck off the rolls or the college/institution by the competent authority for
continuous absence from classes without information for more than one month and/or for non-
payment of fees, for breach of discipline and for any other extra-ordinary reason necessitating
such action .In spite of being notified (three times) by the college authority for long absence
without any reason will be considered as discontinuation of the course.
 A candidate, at all times, shall maintain discipline of the college and shall not indulge in any
activity or behavior unbecoming of a student.
 No candidate is allowed to continue the course in the same year until she produces any
valid/genuine/medical reason to continue the course.
 Every candidate will undergo a period of certified study extending over academic years divided
by four annual examinations.
4. Scheme of Examinations:
The examination shall consist of four parts: part I, part II, Part III, Part IV.
All the parts leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing will be held once a year followed
by a supplementary examination to be held at least 6 weeks after the publication of results at such
centers as will be suggested by the board of studies but determined and notified by the university.
An enrolled candidate of the University from a recognized college, prosecuting the courses of study of
the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, shall have to maintain at least 75% attendance in theory and
clinical experience separately during that particular year of study to appear in that particular part of the
Examination .However, 100% of attendance for practical is mandatory before the award of degree.
• Non-appearance in any part/subject of the examinations shall be considered as failure and shall
be counted as one chance.
 Candidates who have appeared or who is deemed to appear in all the subjects of Part I
Examination may proceed to take regular course of study in the major and subsidiary subjects of
the Part -II B.Sc. Nursing course in a college affiliated to the University and may be admitted to
the Part II course giving a declaration to the principal, subject to the provision that she must
have passed all the subjects of part I Examination before appearing to the Part II examination.
• Candidates who have appeared or who is deemed to appear in all the subjects of Part II
Examination may proceed to take regular course of study in the major and subsidiary subjects of
the Part -II B.Sc. Nursing course in a college affiliated to the University and may be admitted to
the Part III course giving a declaration to the principal, subject to the provision that she must
have passed all the subjects of part II Examination before appearing to the Part III examination.
• Candidates who have appeared or who is deemed to appear in all the subjects of Part III
Examination may proceed to take regular course of study in the major and subsidiary subjects of
the Part -III B.Sc. Nursing course in a college affiliated to the University and may be admitted
to the Part IV course giving a declaration to the principal, subject to the provision that she must
have passed all the subjects of part III Examination before appearing to the Part IV
examination.
• Candidates who have failed in any subject of part IV examination may appear in the
supplementary / next regular examination being the outsider.
• If a candidate fails in either theory or practical paper she has to reappear for both the papers
(Theory& Practical) in the examination.
• The number of attempts for examination has been waived off. However to appear for annual
examination of any part, the candidates shall have to clear all the previous examinations ,e. g, a
candidate has failed in three subjects in part I regular examination ,she is allowed to appear in
supplementary examination. If again she fails in any subject of the said supplementary
examination she is allowed to appear in regular examination of part I to clear only the failed
subject. She is not allowed for part II regular examination, though she was allowed to attend
theory and clinical experiences of part II course. However to complete four years B.Sc.Nursing
course a candidate will not exceed a period of eight years.
Selection of Examiners:
Each major theory and practical papers of B.Sc.Nursing examination shal have to be examined by two
examiners, e .g, internal examiner from the faculty and one external examiner from outside. External
examiner preferably from an institution or another University or retired teacher less than 70 yrs who
fulfils the INC criteria.
• A11 practical examinations must be held in the clinical field of the concerned discipline.
 The number of candidates for practical examination should not exceed 20 per day.
 An examiner for collegiate programme should be a lecturer or above in a college of nursing with
M.Sc. (N) in concerned subject and minimum of 3 years of teaching experience.
 An examiner for B.Sc.(N) programme shall be only M.Sc.(M) qualified faculty.
 The number of attempts for examination has been waived off. However to appear for final
examination, the candidate shall have cleared all the previous examination.

Selection of Moderators:
One moderator in each subject, appointed by the board of studies will moderate the questions set by the
paper setters for finalizing the questions.
Internal assessment:
 There shall be an internal assessment for each subject as shown in the scheme of examination of
the INC.
 The marks of the internal assessment will have to be submitted to the university by the
concerned authorities at least 6 weeks before the university examination.
 Every candidate has to obtain pass marks in internal assessment separately in theory &
practical, otherwise the student should not be sent to University examination.

 No institution shall submit average internal marks of the total students more than 75% i.e. if 40
students are admitted in a course the average score of the 40 students shall not exceed 75% of
total internal marks.

7. Standard of Passing:
 In order to pass, a candidate will have to obtain at least 50% marks in major subjects separately
in theoretical and practical examination whereas to pass in any subsidiary subject a candidate
must obtain at least 40% of marks in that subject.
 A candidate has to pass in internal and external examination separately in each of the paper.

[Classification of results: It will be completely depend upon the WBUHS rules & regulations.However the INC
rules are as follows:
•Pass: obtained 50% marks in each of the theory and practical separately.
• Second class: obtained 50-59% marks in each of the theory and practical separately.
• First class: obtained60-74% marks in each of the theory and practical separately.
• Distinction: obtained75% and above marks in each of the theory and practical separately.
• For declaring the rank aggregate of 4 years marks to be considered]

8. Award of Degree:
 After passing in all the parts of the examination, a candidate will be awarded B.Sc in Nursing
degree under the seal of the University and signed by the Vice Chancellor.

9. Publication of Results:
The University will publish list successful candidates within two months of the completion of the
examination provided that all examiners submit the results in proper time.
