Function of Communication and the Important to the Society

1.1 Introduction

Communication is the process of exchanging information between two or

more parties. In this process, one party transmits message by using a medium and
the other party receives the message. In the communication process, information
flows from sender to receiver. In order to make communication effective, the sender
should know the reaction of the receiver. When the receiver sends back his
response to the sender in connection with the message received, it is called two-way
communication. Through two-way communication, parties can exchange their views,
attitudes, feelings, new, messages information, data etc.

Many authors defined communication in various ways. Some of their

definitions are quoted as “Communication is the art of transmitting information, ideas
and attitudes from one person to another”, according to Emery and others. According
to Theo Haiman defined, “Communication means the process of passing information
and understanding from one person to another.” Furthermore, According to Elliot
Jaquer, “Communication is the sum totals of directly and indirectly, consciously an
unconsciously transmitted feelings, attitudes and wishes”.

1.2 Functions of Communication

Communication is really a different field that has some various objectives. To

gain individual objectives, communication performs quite a few functions. Some of its
major functions are as Information Agent. The principal function of communication is
informing messages to others. For example, teacher as a information agent teaching
the pupils which is a receivers in a class. It really is done verbally or non-verbally.
Verbal messages might be either oral or written. Over a other hand, non-verbal
messages can be sent via human body language, gestures, posture and etc.

One more function of communication is persuading a single party by another.

Persuasion basically means trying to influence the way someone thinks or behaves.
There are all kinds of different ways to persuade someone to do something. For
example, in business, management persuades the employees to make certain that
employees persuade management so that management accepts their ideas,
opinions and suggestions. The business also communicates with external
stakeholders to persuade them.

Next is Social Networking. Social media are computer mediated technologies

that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and
other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. Social media
changes the way individuals and large organizations communicate. For example,
User generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos or videos,
and data generated through all online interactions, are the lifeblood of social media .
Social media can help to improve individuals' sense of connectivity with real or online
communities and social media can be an effective communication or marketing tool
for corporations, entrepreneurs, nonprofit organizations, including advocacy groups
and political parties and governments.

Last is Culture Transmitter. It is a broad concept, it is not a catch-all for all

knowledge acquired through a person's lifetime. Culture transmitter is a field of study
that looks at how people from differing cultural backgrounds communicate, in similar
and different ways among themselves, and how they effort to communicate across
cultures. Intercultural communication is a related field of study. As a means of
sharing concepts or information, cultural transmission is heavily influenced by,
among other thing, the environment, social structure, or political system.

1.3 The important of communication in society

We cannot think society without the use of communication. Most important

part of this communication is giving information with the help of mass communication
regarding any natural calamity danger and spreading of any diseases epidemic. In
that case people can get the information to help them make a move. Mass
Communication helps to inform total society the news, the entertainment and the
advertisements. We get all the news through newspaper radio and television and
everybody just the same news at the same time.

Next is by building and maintaining a good relationship to each other. In our

daily life, by well communicating, you can make many friends or build better
relationship with your friends or family. We are a good communicator when we can
fluently sharing our thoughts, information to someone. By sending a clear message,
people can understand us better.

2. Conclusion

In the nutshell, Communication is the sole source of conveying our thoughts

and dilemmas with other people. Through the use of healthy communication, almost
all kinds of problems can be solved since all the parties involved are provided with a
chance to put forward their thoughts as well as they are also assured that they are
being heard during all points of time throughout the course of the process of
communication. Whether professionally or personally, there is always the need to
maintain a healthy and open- minded communication with people around you. Last
but not the least, communication is an art which brings two individuals closer in the
long run while also enabling them to understand each other’s thoughts easily.
