Fig. 1 – Schematic transverse section in a warehouse.

Figure 1 shows schematically a typical transverse section in a RC warehouse. Halls (A & B) are
located in the Ground Floor. The 1st Floor is entirely occupied by Hall C.

Data & Needs:

 Building length is 52.00 m.
 Given levels are the architectural ones (finished floor levels).
 No columns are desired within the space of each hall.
 Live loads in the Ground & 1st floors = 10 KN/m2. It is 2 KN/m2 on the top roof.
 The building will include 2 interior RC stair-cases between the Ground & 1st floors.
They will be located at the 2 opposite extremities of the corridor. Flight width is 1.50 m
 The corridor will also include 2 industrial lifts open exteriorly in the GF. They will serve between
the Ground & 1st floors. Total loads of each= 150 KN. Each lift requires a void (2.50 x 3.00) m
in plan [NB: these industrial lifts do not need top machinery rooms; they operate by cranes].
 Foundation level is (-2.00) m; allowable soil stress is 1.2 Kg/cm2.

It is required to:
1. Suggest 3 statical systems for the structural elements in the typical transverse section.
Choose one of them to continue the project.
2. Considering reasonable concrete dimensions; draw plans and sections to show the
arrangement of the different structural elements; including foundations.
3. Draw a plan & a section in a zone including a stair case & a lift. Design the stair-case.
Give its structural details on the plan.
4. Design and give detailed structural drawings for the building structural elements.
