In a 230V,10kw D.C.

shunt motor it is required that the starting armature

current should not exceed twice it’s rated armature current.During the starting
of the motor,the starting resistance is cut out in steps, as soon as the armature
current drops to it’s rated value.the field resistance is 115 ohm and the total
armature circuit resistance is 0.348 ohm.Neglect armature inductance.
1. Find the external resistance required at the time of starting the motor.
2. Determine the value of first resistance element that must be cut out when
the armature current drops to rated value.
3. Find the external resistance to be cut out in the second step.
4. Find the total number of steps required and their resistance values

If = = 2A
115
Ia = IL − If = 41.47

Maximum armature current Ia1 =2Ia =82.95

minimum armature current Ia2 =Ia =43.47

R1 = = 2.78
82.95
Rext = R1 = ra = 2.42

Ia2 R2

Ia1 R1

r1 = R1 − R2 = 2.78 − 1.38 = 1.38

R3

R2

r2 = R2 − R3 = 1.38 − 0.69 = 0.69

Ia2 ra ra 0.348 log(0.125)
α= = ⇒ αn = ⇒ 0.5n = = 0.125 ⇒ n = =3
Ia1 R1 R1 2.78 log(0.5)

∴ r1 = 1.39
r2 = 0.695
r3 = R1 − r1 − r2 − ra = 0.347
ra = 0.348
