ALTERNATIVE FUELS + RENEWABLE ENERGY
The Department of Energy is committed to developing alternative
fuels and the infrastructure to support their commercialization.
The Tesla Energy Research Institute focuses on the development
of innovative energy sources and energy efficiency, particularly in
residential and commercial building settings. The DOE and TERI
are challenging engineers, designers, architects, students and
artists to participate in a national design competition addressing
these concerns.

Structure
The competition is comprised of two categories; it is structured to elicit both site-
specific and generic solutions to the challenge of designing vehicles and buildings
that employ alternative fuels, innovative strategies to increase energy efficiency,
and renewable energy sources.

1 Alternative Fuel Vehicles

This category includes both hybrid vehicles using a combination of petroleum-
based internal combustion engines and alternative fuels, and vehicles that use
entirely non-petroleum-based energy sources.

2 Residential/Commercial Building Energy Solutions

This category solicits ideas for two sub-categories:

Energy Efficient Buildings

Innovative Energy Sources
Buildings that use non-traditional, renewable energy technologies, such as
biomass, wind, geothermal, and solar technologies.
Schedule
Registration opens May 1, 2010 and closes May 15, 2010.
Submissions must be received by 4 p.m. on June 30, 2010.
The awards ceremony and exhibition will be held at the
Rational Energy Alternatives Conference held in Boston, MA on
September 15, 2010.

The awards shall include cash prizes up to a total amount of

$15,000. The division of the prize money and the types of awards
PAID

will be at the discretion of the jury. All winning entries will be

included in a nationally distributed publication. There will be no

by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Objectives
The objective of the competition is to gather innovative ideas
that address global dependence on fossil fuels, and the resulting
changes in global climate. Renewable technologies, such as
solar, geothermal, bioenergy, wind, hydropower, and hydrogen,
will play an increasingly critical role in mitigating the effects of
global warming. So too will the development of alternative fuel
vehicles, and new techniques in achieving energy efficiency.
