Question1

a) The following data show the length (in inches) of fish caught in one day in a river:

10.1 10.4 10.5 10.9 11.1

11.2 11.2 11.5 11.7 11.9

12.1 12.1 12.2 12.2 12.3

12.4 12.5 12.6 12.8 12.9

13.2 13.4 13.5 13.6 13.7

14.3 14.5 14.8 15.2 15.5

i. Carefully construct, draw and label a histogram of these data.

ii. Find the mean, the median and the modal group.

iii. Comment on the data given the shape of the histogram and the measures you have
calculated.

iv. Name two other types of graphical displays that would be suitable to represent the data.
[15 marks]

b) The summary statistic for 2 independent datasets from a population with a normal
distribution are as follows:

Sample size Sample mean Sample standard

deviation

𝑥 data 21 5.6 2.5

𝑦 data 16 7.0 3.5

Compute the mean and variance of the combined dataset. [5 marks]

Question 2

a) A population is normally distributed with a population mean of 138 and a population

standard deviation of 21.

i. State the distribution of the sample mean for a simple random samples of
size 𝑛 = 25.

ii. Given a simple random sample of size 𝑛 = 25, determine the probability that the
sample mean will be less than 128.
[5 marks]

b) You are told that a 95% confidence interval for a population proportion is
(0.3775, 0.6225). What was the sample proportion that lead to this confidence interval?
Also, what was the size of the sample used? [5 marks]

c) A company has a security system comprising four electronic devices (A, B, C and D) which
operate independently. Each device has a probability of 0.1 of failure. The four electronic
devices are arranged such that the whole system operates if at least one of A or B functions
and at least one of C or D functions.

Find the probability that the whole system functions properly. [5 marks]

d) A sample of 8 values is taken from a normal distribution with mean  . The sample mean
is 13.42 and true variance  2 is 0.9. Give the formula and calculate a 90% confidence
interval for  and explain the interpretation of the interval. [5 marks]
