IRRIGATION DESIGN II

Example 1
An intermediate regulator has to be constructed on a canal according to the
following data and sketch:-
U.S. regulator D.S. regulator
Road level (22.00 ) (21.00 )
Canal bed width 23.0m 21.0m

Width of bridge = (10m + 2*1.5 side walk), Dead load=1.0t/m2, Live load= 3.0t/m2
P P P P

Canal Side Slope = 2:1, Q max = 70 m3/sec,

R R P P Q min = 55 m3/sec, Coefficient of Lane = 8
R R P P

Width of vents (S)= 6.0m, thickness of pier (tp)=1.5m, thickness of floor (tf)=1.50m

It is required to:-
1. Submit all hydraulic calculations of the regulator.

2. By using sketches, calculate stresses underneath the pier for the case of maximum moment
about the axial axis-x of pier, maximum Mx.

3. For the floor, determine the followings:

i- Maximum stresses on the soil
ii- Maximum tensile stress in the floor
iii- Missing dimensions of the floor and sketch the uplift diagram

Dr. Morsy A. Morsy Page 1

4. Draw a neat sketch showing the plan half earth remove (P.H.R) and section elevation of the
regulator with sufficient levels and dimensions.

1-Hydraulic design of Regulator

Qmax = 70 m3/sec,
P P Qmin = 55 m3/sec
P P

For maximum discharge of the down stream canal of regulator

Ac = (21+2*3.7 ) 3.70 =105.08 m2 P

Vc = 70 /105.08 = 0.67 m/sec

Assume Vv =1.20 m/sec

Av = 70/1.20 =58.33 m2 P

=n*s*d

S= 6.0 m given

58.33
n= = 2.62 Take n=3
6 * 3.7

Then, actual area of vents

av = 3*6*3.70 = 66.6 m2 P

Vv = 70/66.60 = 1.05 m/sec < 1.50 m/sec

ii- check of contraction

2-Stresses underneath the pier for the case of Max. Mx

R d.l = 1.0 * 13 = 48.75 tons
2
6 + 1.5
R L.L = 3.0 + 13 = 146.25 tons
2

Rt = 2 *Rd.l + RL.L = 2 * 48.75 + 146.25 = 243.75 tons

ii- Own weight of pier

( wp ) = 2.5 *1.5 * 17 *5.0 = 318.75 tons

II- Water pressure

For high water level case, difference in water level = (20.00)- (19.70) =0.30m
For low water level case, difference in water level = (19.70)- (19.40) =0.30m
So, consider water level of high water condition
