EXPERIENCE THROUGH PERFORMANCE:

INTRODUCTION:

For people with disabilities, participating in art programs has not always been possible.
Even today in more enlightened times, we don’t see the level of participation, or inclusion, in
arts programs among young people with disabilities as we see in able-bodied children and
teens. Slowly but surely, theater programs, visual arts classes, and dance troupes designed
specifically for people with disabilities can provide an outlet for inventiveness and creativity.

Access to art, theater and drama programs can take several forms. With an expression of
all characteristics of the human mind aesthetically the varied human emotions, are identified
as ‘RAS’.
Human emotions can be categorized into nine sub-headings or ‘Navras’. They are:
1. Hasya — laughter
2. Bhayanak — evil Shringar — aesthetics
3. Rudra — chivalrous
4. Karun — pathos
5. Vir — courage
6. Adbhut — astonishing
7. Vibhatsa — terrifying glory
8. Shaanti — peace
9. Shringaar — decorating one’s self
Sometimes, classes and programs that focus on a creative pursuit are available through
nonprofit organizations, or schools. Other times, arts are used as a therapeutic measure in
a professional setting as a means to connect young people with disabilities to their bodies,
emotions and self-esteem. Arts programs for the disabled serve as a physical and figurative
bridge that can connect and foster a participant’s ties to their family, to friends, and the
community as a whole. Sometimes, it can tackle feelings and issues in a way that promotes
understanding and goodwill.

AIM:
Creating a space for the physically impaired to pursue their interests in the performing arts
and providing a definite platform for collaborating the performing industry with the students.
The learning facilities include theatre, dance and visual art programs.

OBJECTIVE:
A definite theatre programs, visual art classes, and dance troupes for the people with
physical impairments like blindness, deafness, dumbness and locomotive issues.

The design strategies for the program may include:

 Barrier free design with flexibility in accessing spaces.

 Adopting textures on the wall and floor planes to enhance the usability of the
space.

 Health care establishments.

Other Spaces that include are:

 Amphitheatre
 Auditoriums
 Dance studios
 Theatre halls
 Rehearsal rooms
 Dormitories
 Community dining space
 Art workshops
 Plazas
 Parks
 Galleries, etc.

SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS:

Providing the students to gain knowledge based on their physical abilities and providing
them a platform to collaborate with the theatre industry and excel in their pursuits.

OUTCOME:

The design can create an intrinsic platform for the performers to deploy their talents in a
public domain, and allowing them to advertise their capabilities in various performing art
forms. Also allowing them to interact with theatre personnel’s, and professionals, by giving
them opportunities in the industry.

CASE STUDIES:
1. Kala Academy:
Kala Academy (Academy of the Arts) is a prominent Cultural Centre run by the Government of
Goa, situated at Campal, Panajim. The building was designed by Charles Correa. It plays the role
of being an apex body to develop music, dance, drama, fine art, folk art, literature, etc. and thereby
promote (the) cultural unity of Goa. The Centre offers training through its faculty, and also
organizes festivals, competitions, exhibitions, workshops, seminars, and other program related to
various forms of the local arts.

2. Kalakshetra Foundation:
Kalakshetra Foundation, formerly simply Kalakshetra, is an arts and cultural academy
dedicated to the preservation of traditional values in Indian Art and crafts, especially in the field
of Bharatanatyam dance and Gandharveda music. Based in Chennai, India, under Arundale's
guidance, the institution achieved national and international recognition for its unique style and
perfectionism. In 1962, Kalakshetra moved to a new campus in Besant Nagar, Chennai, occupying
40 hectares (99 acres) of land.
