Definition theater

The definition of Theater in the narrow sense that the theater can be defined as a
drama (life story or human life both fictitious and real) that is told and staged on stage
/ stage, then discussed by the people who refer to the guidelines text / script.

In a broad sense, the meaning of the theater is all kinds of performances or spectacles
that are performed in front of the public. For example, wayang orang, lenong,
ketoprak, ludruk, arja, randai, reog, and so on.

The theater emerged around the 6th century BC from the ancient Greeks who had had
a performing arts called drama. Drama performances come from religious ceremonies
in the form of worship of the God of Wine named Dionysus. Theater in Ancient
Greece is usually performed publicly in a place called theatron. Theatron is a special
building for drama performances, open without roof, and built on the slopes of the
hill.

In Italy, theatrical art is growing very rapidly and experiencing glory, both in terms of
stage, decoration addition, or addition of ornaments and screen at the venue so that
gave birth to the modern theater. Unlike the Greek era, audiences in Italy are limited
to certain circles, the nobility.

History of Theater Arts in Indonesia

The performing arts like the theater have appeared long ago. Indonesian theater or the
archipelago archipelago includes traditional theater that comes from the regions in
Indonesia. For example, ketoprak from Java, mak yong from Riau, and gong drama
from Bali. In the beginning, this traditional theater was used as a religious ceremony.
However, as the times progressed, some traditional theater became a show for
spectacle alone.

Furthermore, entering the 20th century the theater of the archipelago changes so that
the modern theater appears. This modern theater is a theater that is influenced by
traditional theater and western theater. With the influence of the west, the form of
modern theater performances far different from the traditional theater.
The differences are among others seen from the stories presented, the arrangement of
the stage, and the arrangement of light. The emergence of modern theater also gave
rise to modern theater groups such as Popular Theater, Small Theater, Koma Theater,
Theater Workshop, Bandung Theater Studiklub, Black Umbrella Theater, and Gandrik
Theater.
