Lesson Title: Review Day Subject: SBI3U

Unit Title: Diversity of Living Things Time Required: 2 Days

Teacher Candidate: Emma Gordon Date: February 26, 2018
Mentor Teacher: Theresa Kolobaric Grade: 11U

Learning Goals (What do you want the students to know or be able to do at the end of the lesson?)
- Students will be able to analyze the effects of various human activities on the diversity of living things
- Students will be able to investigate the principles of scientific classification
- Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of living organisms in terms of the
principles of taxonomy and phylogeny
- Students will be able to analyze some of the risks and benefits of human intervention to the biodiversity of
aquatic or terrestrial ecosystems
- Students will be able to analyze the impact that climate change might have on the diversity of living things
- Students will be able to use appropriate terminology related to biodiversity
- Students will be able to classify organisms from each of the kingdoms according to their anatomical and
physiological characteristics
- Students will be able to draw biological diagrams of organisms from each of the kingdoms according to
their anatomical and physiological characteristics
- Students will be able to classify the organisms according to the principles of taxonomy
- Students will be able to create a dichotomous key to identify and classify organisms from each of the
kingdoms
- Students will be able to apply a dichotomous key to identify and classify organisms from each of the
kingdoms
- Students will be able to explain the fundamental principles of taxonomy and phylogeny by defining
concepts of taxonomic rank and relationship
- Students will be able to compare and contrast the structure and function of different types of prokaryotes,
eukaryotes, and viruses
- Students will be able to describe unifying and distinguishing anatomical and physiological characteristics
of representative organisms from each of the kingdoms
- Students will be able to explain key structural and functional changes in organisms as they have evolved
over time
- Students will be able to explain why biodiversity is important to maintaining viable ecosystems

Accommodations (How will you meet the needs of your students? What management strategies will you use?)
English as a Second Language:
- EA support, or peer mentor
Individual Action Plan:
- Accommodations only as specified on the student’s IEP – allowing for time, number of questions etc.
Curriculum Expectations (Which expectation is the focus for your instruction?)
Overall Expectations:
B1. Analyze the effects of various human activities on the diversity of living things
B2. Investigate, through laboratory and/or field activities or through simulations, the principles of scientific
classification, using appropriate sampling and classification techniques
B3. Demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of living organisms in terms of the principles of taxonomy and
phylogeny
Specific Expectations:
B1.1 Analyze some of the risks and benefits of human intervention to the biodiversity of aquatic or terrestrial
ecosystems
B1.2 Analyze the impact that climate change might have on the diversity of living things
B2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to biodiversity
B2.2 Classify, and draw biological diagrams of, representative organisms from each of the kingdoms according to
their unifying and distinguishing anatomical and physiological characteristics
B2.3 Use proper sampling techniques to collect various organisms from a marsh, pond, field, or other ecosystem,
and classify the organisms according to the principles of taxonomy
B2.4 Create and apply a dichotomous key to identify and classify organisms from each of the kingdoms
