17. SCF Holdings is one of the main retailers for clothes and accessories in a shopping mall
in KL. SCF holdings takes the products on consignment from the suppliers at cost price
and sells after a mark up of 60% profit from the cost price. SCF holdings however,
needs to pay commission on the total monthly sales to the owner of the shopping mall on
top of the monthly rental of RM6800. The commission payable depends on the sales
amount. If the monthly sales are above RM100,000 the commission is 0.10% but if less,
then it’s 0.15%. All payments to and from the supplier are dealt in USD. (1 USD =
RM3.66; RM1 = USD 0.28)

Holdings is able to pay the balance 75% in the following month. What is the total amount
payable for the goods received in April worth RM125000 should SCF Holdings takes

d. At the end of April, the supplier contact SCF Holdings to inform that there will be a
refund due to damaged goods claim done two months ago. The claim for refund was
done for USD8850, however, the supplier is only willing to refund up to 35% of the
amount. Now, taking into consideration of the refund amount which is deductable from
the total amount payable to the supplier, how much would SCF Holdings need to pay the

18. The Brown Taxi company charge a flag fall of $3 and a rate of $2 per kilometre
travelled. They use the formula: F = 3 + 2d, where d is the distance travelled in

kilometres, to calculate the fare charged F (in dollars). For example, a taxi ride of 5 km
would cost $13.

a. Matthew took a Brown Taxi from Perth to his home, a distance of 25 km. Calculate the
fare Matthew was charged. [1]

b. Peta is charged $41 for catching a Brown Taxi home. What distance did she travel in the

c. Write a formula for the fare charged by the Orange Taxi company in terms of d (the

19. A Plastic model o f a 747 airplane is constructed to a scale of 1 to 144. If the wingspan
of the model is 40 cm, how long is the actual wingspan on a 747 airplane, to the nearest

course of a year. If 3000 families were surveyed, how many families would not have

21. The RDA of protein intake for males is 56 grams per day. Two ounces of a revolutionary

22. You want to purchase some cat food for your pet Furball. You have a discount coupon for
Catz brand only which gives $1.25 off on 25 pounds or more. On the shelf you find,
Catz cat food which is 50 pounds for $19.95, 25 pounds for $10.40 and 8 pounds for
$3.40. You want to get value for money and therefore you are looking for the best buy.
The fifty pound bag is labelled as ‘Best Buy’ and the eight pound bag is on clearance sale
with 10% off. Which pack would you pick? Why? [5]

23. At 3 pm, Cindy’s shadow is 1.06 meters long. She is 162cm tall. At the same time, a tree
which is about 10 meters away casts a shadow which is6.58 meters long.
a. How tall is the tree, to the nearest hundredths of a meter? [2]

b. Later that day, if Cindy’s shadow was 2.95 meters long, how long a shadow would the
tree have at that time, to the nearest hundredths of a meter? Use the height of the tree
which you determined in part (a) to the nearest hundredths to calculate the tree’s

24. About 9 out of 10 adults think it is a good idea to exercise regularly. But of the ones
who think it is a good idea, only 1 in 6 actually exercise at least three times a week.
a. At this rate, how many of the 300 employees in a company actually exercise on a
regular basis? [1]

b. The company has decided to pay a quarterly incentive to the employees who exercise
regularly by giving a special bonus of 3.5% of the employees’ monthly salary. This
means every quarter of the year, the employees will receive the special bonus
(3.5% of their monthly salary) credited into their bank account. As such, how
much more will Lynn make in a year, to the nearest dollar, if she receives this special
bonus, given her monthly salary is $3548. [2]

25. A not-very-successful daily newspaper company hired a manager who will look into
advertisements. The newspaper contained one-half advertising and one-half news stories.
However, media regulation indicates a newspaper must have four times as much
advertising as news stories to make money. In addition, the advertising must be divided
in the following ratio: 5 to 3 to 1, retail advertising to national advertising to classified
advertising. The daily is typically 45 pages in length.
a. How many pages should be advertising and how many should be news stories, if the
newspaper wants to make money? [2]

b. Based on the media regulation ratios, how should the pages be divided among the
three types of advertising? [3]

c. After you made the changes in the advertising distributions ratios, the newspaper
began making a profit-for the first time in years, last year. If last year’s total
advertising revenue was $810, 000, how much was earned by each of advertising? [3]

d. If the manager is promised a ‘two hundredths’ share of each year’s revenue from
retail and classified advertising, and ‘one seventy-fifths’ share for national. How
much bonus will he receive for last year’s sales? [3]

26. Adrian has begun a new job as a car sales man. His fortnightly wage is calculated in two
parts: the first, a fixed amount of $600; the second, 2% of sales made each fortnight.
a. Find the linear model which describes Adrian’s fortnightly wage.

b. How much can Adrian expect to take home if he makes $20,000 in sales in a
particular fortnight?

c. How much must Adrian make in sales in order to obtain a fortnightly wage of
$2400?

Brett, is also a salesman in the motor vehicle industry, is paid a fortnightly salary of
$860 regardless of sales made.

d. Find the linear model which describes Brett’s fortnightly salary.

e. Compare Adrian’s and Brett’s fortnightly wage when both of them do not make
any sales in that fortnight.

f. How much would Adrian have to make in sales in one fortnight to obtain the
same amount as Brett takes home?

g. Sketch on the same plane the linear model which describes Adrian’s and
Brett’s fortnightly wages.

27. Novak Novelties manufacturers a variety of children’s 3-D puzzles. The director of the
company has asked his assistants Caitlin, Bridget and Emese to prepare a report on

production costs, expense and returns on the puzzles. Each puzzle costs the company
$15 to produce. In addition, the company has monthly overheads of $21,000. The
selling price of each puzzle is $45.
a. Write an equation that describes the total cost, C, of producing n puzzles for a
month.
b. Write an equation that describes the revenue generated, R, from selling n
puzzles.
c. On the same plane, sketch the graph for cost and revenue.
d. Clearly indicate the significance of the intersection points between the two
