Thank you for purchasing our Drop Shape Analyzer – DSA100M. This documentation will help
you with the commissioning, operation and maintenance.

Read this documentation carefully before using the measuring instrument or accessories to
avoid risk to personnel and material damage. Keep this documentation safely in the vicinity of
the measuring instrument and for the whole of its life so that you can refer to it at any time.

1.3 Intended use and application restrictions

 The DSA100 is intended only for the shape analysis of microscopical drops on solid surfaces.

 The intended use comprises the use of pure water or diiodomethane as drop liquid.
KRÜSS is not liable for damages of the dosing system due to the use of other liquids unless
this use was agreed upon between the customer and the KRÜSS GmbH.

 Intended use includes the exclusive use of accessories supplied by KRÜSS or substitutes with
an identical design in the case of disposable accessories.

 Some of the housing components of the DSA100M are not resistant against acids, bases or
organic solvents. KRÜSS does not accept any guarantee for damage due to escape or
spillage of such liquids. The same applies to damage due to corrosive vapours.

2.1 Safety instructions

Please observe the following safety instructions in order to avoid hazards:

 As well as these general safety instructions, please follow the safety instructions and warning
information in the remainder of the documentation text.

 The DSA100M is intended for use in a laboratory or pilot plant station. The general safety
rules for working in a laboratory environment apply to work carried out with the DSA100M.

 The DSA100M and accessories may only be used by trained personnel.

 When carrying out measurements with hazardous substances the safety regulations and, if
available, information in the appropriate safety data sheets must be taken into account when
handling such substances.

 Do not use the DSA100M in explosion-proof areas.

 The controls of the DSA100M and a connected computer must not be operated when
wearing protective gloves, which have already been used for handling hazardous materials.

 Do not use the DSA100M if the instrument is obviously damaged.

 When carrying out measurements with hazardous substances, the DSA100M must be placed
at a location which is appropriately configured for that purpose.

 Set up the DSA100M so that access to the mains connection is unrestricted and the
DSA100M can be disconnected from the mains immediately in the event of danger.

 Disconnect the DSA100M from the power supply immediately if there is any damage to the
electronics, if liquids are spilled over the DSA100M or if there is an escape of
tempering fluid.

 Handle all glass parts and optical parts with care. Do not touch them with fingers or with
sharp objects.

2.1.2 Safety instruction for dosing hazardous substances

When dosing hazardous liquids, this may result in a certain danger level depending on the
hazard class.

 Before use, take into account the safety instructions and safety data sheets for handling
hazardous substances.

Take care that, apart from dosing, no further amounts of liquid escape.

2.2 Warning information


The safety instructions are supplemented by warning information in the course of the text at
exactly the point in the manual where it is needed.

In order to measure the contact angle with the DSA100M a drop is placed on a sample located
on a sample table. The drop is illuminated from one side and a camera at the opposite side
records an image of the drop.

The drop image is transferred to a computer and shown on the monitor. The ADVANCE software
contains time-proven tools for analyzing the drop image with whose help it is possible to
determine the contact angle and to calculate the surface free energy.

In principle, the DSA100M consists of three components:

 a sample table with up to three mobile axes

 an optical system with camera, microscope optics and illumination

 a software-controlled piezo dosing system

4 Computer system setup


This chapter covers the setup of the computer system for different types of camera:

 IEEE-1394: older instruments

 USB 3.0 (uEye): current instruments

 If you have purchased your computer from KRÜSS together with the DSA100M and if the

IEEE-1394 interface board has already been installed then you can skip this chapter.

4.1 Mounting an IEEE-1394 interface board

DANGER
Electric shock by charged components

Touching charged components can lead to an electric shock with fatal consequences.

 Switch off the computer and pull out the mains plug before opening the computer housing.

NOTICE
Touching the expansion board when the body is charged electrostatically can damage
electronic components.

 Before touching the board discharge yourself, for example by touching a metallic part of
the panel.

 Mounting the board must be carried out before installing the ADVANCE software.

 If necessary, obtain the help of a computer specialist.

1. Switch off the computer and pull out the mains plug. Open the computer housing.

2. Remove the board from the packaging and insert it in a free PCI express slot.

3. Fix the bracket of the board to the housing. Use the substitute bracket delivered with the
board for a low profile case.

4. Close the computer housing, reconnect your PC and switch it on.

4.2 Installing the camera driver

4.2.1 uEye camera driver installation (USB camera)

For instruments with a USB camera, the uEye camera driver must be installed. The uEye camera
driver must be installed before the instrument can be used.

1. Insert the ADVANCE installation USB stick.

2. Open the folder “Support/Camera drivers/IDS uEye”.

3. Open the folder that matches your computer's architecture: “x86” for 32 bit; “x64” for 64 bit.

4. Start the .exe file that is contained in the selected folder.

5. Follow the instructions in the installation assistant.

4.2.2 AVT driver installation (IEEE-1394 camera)

If your instrument is equipped with an IEEE-1394 camera you need to manually install the driver.

1. Insert the ADVANCE installation USB stick.

2. Open the folder “Support/Camera drivers/AVT”.

3. Follow the instructions in the document “AVT Vimba installation instructions.pdf”.

5.1 Opening the transport packing and checking the scope


of supply
1. Open the transport packing. Check the DSA100M and its accessories for damage
during shipment.

NOTICE

 Please keep the transport packing material, at least the PE foam forms. The transport
packaging is required if the instrument has to be shipped for reparation.

2. Use the delivery note provided to check if the supply is complete.

3. Please contact KRÜSS or your local dealer without delay, if the supply is incomplete. If
damage during shipment occurred, please contact your contracted transport company and
don’t hesitate to inform us.

5.2 Transport
Please observe the following instructions in order to provide save transport:

 Two people are required for transporting the DSA100M.

 Do not transport the DSA100M with storage vessels filled.

 Remove parts which lie on the DSA100M. Take care that all components are fixed.

 Transport the DSA100M with the help of a trolley. Hold the DSA100M firmly
during transportation.

 For lifting, hold the DSA100M from both sides under the base plate. Do not hold the
instrument at the illumination, a dosing unit or an axis for lifting.

5.3 Location and ambient conditions

For accuracy of results the DSA100M must be installed at an adequate location:

 Set the instrument up in a place where vibrations can be avoided.

 Do not place the instrument in the vicinity of a bright source of light.

 Avoid drafts during the measurements. Do not place the instrument in the vicinity of cooling
or heating systems or ventilation units.

 Avoid large variations in room temperature during the measurements.

 Avoid contamination of the sample liquid by atmospheric air (e.g. by exhaust


from machines).

 Place the instrument on a level, stable, and vibration-free base. Check if the base is level
using a bubble level or spirit level.

5.4 Levelling the instrument

 If not all axes have yet been assembled, this step must be carried out before levelling the
instrument ( Chapter 6).

 Place the spirit level from the scope of supply on the sample table or, if the sample table
isn’t mounted yet, on the base of the DSA100M frame.

 Adjust the height of the four adjusting feet of the measuring system until the air bubble in
the spirit level is located completely in the inner circle.

5.5 Power supply/power switch


A net adapter was delivered with the DSA100M.

 Connect the round 4-pin plug to the 24 V DC socket on the rear panel of the DSA100M.

 Connect the net adapter to the mains (100-240 V AC).

 The main switch Power is on the right hand side (rear view). After the instrument has been
switched on all the software-controlled axes, the needle selector and the syringe drives (if
present) move to their zero positions for initialization.

 When the instrument is switched on the LED on the front panel lights up to show an

intensive blue; when the instrument is switched off it is still weakly lit up.

5.6 Connecting the computer


The computer is to be connected to the RS232 connection (Serial PC) at the rear side of
the DSA100M.

A corresponding cable is within the supply of the instrument.

5.6.1 Carrying out the connection

Serial port connection

 Connect the RS232 connector (Serial PC) at the DSA100M rear panel with a serial interface
of the computer.

USB port connection/USB driver installation

 Two driver components must be installed, so that the installation routine of the hardware
assistant must be carried out twice.

1. Insert the ADVANCE USB stick.

2. Plug the adapter KA10 into a USB port of the computer. Connect the RS232
connection (Serial PC) at the rear of the DSA100M to the adapter. Switch on the DSA100M.

 Afterwards, always use the same USB port of the computer if possible. Otherwise the
serial port assignment ( Chapter 5.6.2) must be changed.

3. Select manual for the driver search when carrying out the driver installation.

4. Select the folder “SUPPORT/KA10/Driver Windows 7.0” on the ADVANCE USB stick.

5. Click on OK . Driver installation starts.

5.6.2 Port assignment

After the start of the software the port to which the DSA100M is connected must be entered.

 Click on the arrow button at the window’s right margin to open the Settings area. Choose
the Instrument Configuration tab.

 Select the occupied COM-port from the drop-down menu marked below.

6 Mounting axes
 Usually the axes are already assembled when the instrument is delivered. This chapter

describes the assembly of axes or tables that were acquired afterwards.

6.1 Order of the axes and height compensation with spacers


Up to three axes, manual or software-controlled, can be assembled on the frame.

Alternative setups

 Not mounted x- or y- axes are replaced by an additional spacer respectively.

 Instead of an x-axis, a rotating table (wafer table) can be mounted. The wafer table is
mounted onto a z-axis.

 Instead of a sample table, an environmental chamber (temperature chamber, humidity


control) may be mounted.

 Instead of the base spacer, the frame of the optional observation optics may be mounted.

6.2 Mounting a spacer

 When the DSA100M is delivered the required spacers are usually already mounted.

6.2.1 Threads for mounting spacers and axes

Each of the spacers has three threaded holes for screwing onto a different spacer (S) and four
threaded holes at the corners for screwing an axis (A) onto the spacer:

 Mount the spacer on top of the already mounted spacer using the three hexagon socket
screws provided.

 In rare cases the spacer must be mounted on the base plate of the DSA100M.

6.2.2 Replacing an axis with a spacer

If an axis must be removed or replaced by a spacer, proceed as follows:

1. Move the installed x or y axis out of the center to that the fixing screws are released.

 With software-controlled axes: please consult the software help to see how the axes
are moved.

2. Remove all available cable connections from the axes.

3. Screw off the four screws that connect the lowest axis to the spacer (3 mm Allen wrench).

NOTICE
 Hold the axis firmly with your other hand so that it cannot fall to the ground.

4. Remove the clips that are attached with the screws and remove the axes from the spacer.

6.3 Mounting axes

NOTICE
 The axes are fixed at four edges with one screw each. Tighten up the screws in rotating order
to achieve uniform stress and avoid tilting.

6.3.1 Usage of fixing strips

Each axis is either screwed onto a spacer or onto another axis. To mount an axis, fixing strips are
required as follows:

 Two strips without threads for attaching an axis to a spacer

 Two strips with threads for attaching a z-axis to an x-axis or y-axis

 If only the z-axis is present then no fixing strip is required; the axis is screwed directly onto
the spacer.

 Not always are all strips used which were delivered. Keep the unneeded strips save. They
may be required for the occasion of conversions.

6.3.2 Mounting an x- or y-axis on a spacer

1. Place the axis on the built-in spacer and hold it firmly. The axis should be positioned so that
the spacer is located below the center of the range of movement of the axis.

2. Place the non-threaded fixing strips on the spacer so that the cramping edges fit inside the
ridges of the axis.

3. Slide the strip along the axis so that the openings in the strips and spacer lie above
each other.

4. Screw down the strips with four screws.

6.3.3 Mounting x-axis on y-axis

1. Place the square adjustment plate in the center of the y-axis.

 The adjustment plate ensures that the x-axis is aligned exactly at right angles to
the y-axis.

2. Place the x-axis on the y-axis. Place one of the fixing strips with threaded openings below
the x-axis so that the cramping edges fit inside the ridges of the y-axis. Hold the strip firmly.

3. Place two non-threaded fixing strips with their cramping edges inside the ridges of the x-
axis. Slide the strips so that the openings on the upper strip coincide with threaded
openings of the lower fixing strip.

Fix the strips with two screws lightly so that the axis can still slide about.

4. Treat the other side of the axis in the same manner. Slide the x-axis so that it lies as centrally
as possible above the y-axis.

5. Fasten the screws.

6.3.4 Mounting a z-axis

Mounting on a spacer

If only the z-axis is used then this is screwed directly onto the spacer without any fixing strips.

Mounting on an x- or y-axis

1. Place the z-axis centrally on the metal block of the x- or y-axis.

2. Place one of the threaded fixing strips below the z-axis so that the cramping edge fits inside
the ridge. Slide the strip and the z-axis until the openings of the z-axis coincide with the
openings in the strip.

3. Fix the strip lightly so that the axis can still slide about.

4. Fix the second strip in the same way.

5. Slide the axis to the central position above the lower axis.

6. Screw down the strips with four screws.

6.4 Connecting software-controlled axes


The connections for the axes (Axis 1 to Axis 4) are located on the rear panel of the DSA100M.

 For x-axis, the connector Axis 2 must be used.

 A z-axis, y-axis, wafer table or tilting table can be connected to any of ports Axis 1, Axis 3
and Axis 4. The axes are recognized automatically.

controlled axes that have been ordered. The length of the cables to be used for each axis

 Usually the sample table adapter for micro applications is mounted on a micro positioning
table. However, it may also be mounted directly onto the z-axis.

1. Unscrew the standard sample table adapter if available. Remove the screws beneath the
axis platform.

2. Mount the sample table adapter for micro applications onto the axis platform from the top
using the four hexagon socket screws provided.

7.2 Manual micro-positioning table PS3244


In order to achieve a suitable sample table height, a horizontal axis or a spacer must be
dismounted before mounting the micro-positioning table PS3244.

Mounting

1. Mount the sample table adapter for micro applications onto the sample table from the top
using the hexagon socket screws provided.

 Eventually, the sample table adapter is already mounted.

 Mount the positioning onto the platform of the z-axis from below using four hexagon
socket screws. Use the special screws that are threaded only at the tip.

 Eventually, a standard sample table adapter must be removed before mounting.

 Move the sample table to the desired position with the help of the two positioning screws:

7.3 Software-controlled micro positioning table


The micro positioning unit for the x- and y-positions is to be mounted directly on top of a z-axis.

Notes

 If a y-axis or a z-axis is installed these axes must be removed before assembling PS3240.

 A spacer must be mounted in addition to the base spacer.

Procedure

1. Put the sample table on top of the z-axis with the axis connection to the rear.

2. Fix the PS3240 set-up with four hexagon socket screws from below at the platform of the
z-axis. Use the special screws that are threaded only at the tip.

3. Mount the top piece on top of the sample table using the four hexagon socket
screws (M4) provided.

 The top piece is possibly already mounted.

4. Connect the micro-step sample table with the unlabeled 16-pole connector at the rear panel
of the DSA100M using the angled plug.

8 Assembling the illumination


This chapter describes two cases for assembling an illumination:

 Assembling the illumination to the standard set-up ( Chapter 8.1).

 Converting the illumination from a DSA100 to a DSA100M set-up ( Chapter 8.2).

8.1 DSA100M standard set-up

1. Open both doors of the chambers on both sides of the DSA100M.

2. Remove the covers from both sides of the housing. In order to do that, pull the springs
inside the chambers and lift up the covers.

3. Unscrew the upper cover from both sides (screws at the top of the left and right chamber)
and remove it.

4. Thread the cable of the illumination through the hole on the inner right side of the
instrument’s housing.

5. Lead the cable through the opening in the housing of the BUS board. Connect the plug with
the free socket on top of the electronics board of the illumination.

6. Remount the top cover and close the chambers. The lamp itself sticks to the metal
plate magnetically.

8.2 Conversion from DSA100 to DSA100M


Two different illumination modules are used for the devices DSA100 and DSA100M:

 Module IL3211 for DSA100: software-controlled standard illumination.

 Module IL3230 for DSA100M: software-controlled illumination for microscope optics.

 This chapter describes the conversion from IL3211 to IL3230.

8.2.1 Exchanging the electronics board

NOTICE
Touching the electronics board when the body is charged electrostatically can damage
electronic components.

Before touching the electronics board discharge yourself, for example by touching a metallic
part of the panel.

NOTICE
 Take care that always the right electronics board is installed. If the electronics board does
not fit to the illumination it can be damaged when switching on the instrument.

1. Switch off the instrument and pull the mains plug.

2. Open both doors of the chambers on both sides of the instrument.

3. Remove the covers from both sides of the housing. In order to do that, pull the spring inside
the chamber and lift up the cover.

NOTICE
The cover of the illumination is still connected with the instrument via a cable.

Lift up the cover carefully and do not pull the cable.

4. Disconnect the connection between the two cables at the illumination cover (connection for
cooling the illumination).

The illumination cover can now be removed.

5. Unscrew the upper cover from both sides (screws at the top of the left and right chamber)
and remove it.

 Frequently, the camera must also be exchanged in the course of an illumination


conversion. Follow the instructions ( Chapter 9) before closing the cover.

The BUS board which is located underneath the cover contains electronics boards for the
illumination, the camera (optionally) and the dosing unit (optionally).

board. The position of the board can be different dependent on the set-up.

6. Unscrew the board support of the illumination board using an Allen wrench.

7. Remove the two-pole plug (= illumination connection) from the top of the
illumination board.

8. Unplug the multi-pole plug (connection for the temperature sensor) from the connection at
the component side of the illumination board.

9. Remove the illumination board from the BUS board.

10. Plug the illumination board into the previously released slot on the BUS board. Fix the board
by reassembling the board support.

8.2.2 Exchanging the illumination housing

1. Hold the illumination housing from one side and unscrew the four hexagonal socket screws
inside the panel.

Remove the illumination housing.

2. Fix the exchange illumination housing using the same screws and holes.

3. Connect the two-pole illumination plug with the electronics board ( page 34).

4. Connect the plug for the temperature sensor connection with the illumination board
( page 35).

5. Assemble the lamp for IL3230 according to Chapter 8.1.

6. Connect the cooling connection at the illumination cover with the previously released plug
( page 34).

Reassemble the illumination cover.

9 Microscope optics, camera and calibration


This chapter describes two cases for assembling the optics and the camera:

 Assembling the optics to the DSA100M standard set-up ( Chapter 9.1).

 Converting the optics from a DSA100 to a DSA100M setup ( Chapter 9.2).

The calibration of your measuring instrument is described directly following.

9.1 Standard setup


1. Loosen the set screw at the holding device for the optical system.

2. Remove the microscope lens from the cover. Remove the cap from the right side (according
to the figure below) of the tube. Lead the tube through the holding device from the left and
screw the lens onto the tube from the right.

3. Fix the optical system with the setscrew.

4. Align the lamp to the microscope optics vertically and horizontally.

5. If you are working with a 2X lens, a light scattering end piece must be assembled to
the lamp.

Put the end piece onto the lamp and fix it with the screw using a 3 mm Allen wrench.

 With this optical setup it is also possible to measure drops and samples with standard
size. In this case, the 20X microscope lens must be exchanged with a 2X lens.

6. Remove the protective caps from the other side of the tube and from the camera. Screw the
camera onto the tube.

NOTICE
 Do not touch the glass window which covers the sensor chip.

Assemble the camera to the system as fast as possible and take care that the camera is not
exposed to dust.

 Your camera type can be different from that on the figure.

7. Connect the USB camera with the provided cord to an USB 3.0 port on your computer.

 The camera performs best when connected to an USB 3.0 port.

Horizontal alignment of the camera

When a camera image is visualized on a screen, the camera must be adjusted horizontally to
obtain a levelled image.

1. Switch on the DSA100M and start the ADVANCE software.

2. Place an object with an exactly horizontal edge onto the sample table and get the edge
into focus.

3. Turn the camera so that the edge in focus is aligned horizontally.

 You may use the horizontal measuring lines in the DSA software as a support
( ADVANCE user manual).

4. Fasten the previously loosened screw at the correct camera position.

9.2 Conversion from DSA100 to DSA100M


1. Switch off the instrument and pull the mains plug.

2. Open both doors of the chambers on both sides of the instrument.

3. Remove the covers from both sides of the housing. In order to do that, pull the springs

6. In case of software-controlled zoom and focus: Unplug the two multi-pole plugs at the
cables that lead to the optics from the optics board which is connected to the BUS board.

 For clarity reasons, the image shows the board unplugged from the BUS board.

7. Loosen the screw marked in the following image using an Allen wrench (1.5 mm). Remove
the camera from the guidance.

NOTICE
Do not try to unscrew the tube when the camera is still attached to the camera housing. The
force used for unscrewing can damage the optics.

8. Unscrew the tube which is screwed onto the camera.

 If you cannot unscrew the tube manually, KRÜSS recommends using engineers pliers
with plastic jaws for unscrewing the tube.

NOTICE
Never touch the glass window, which protects the sensor chip.

 Put the protective cap onto the camera while converting the camera housing.

9. Hold the camera housing from one side and unscrew the four hexagonal socket screws
inside the panel.

10. Remove the camera housing.

11. Fix the exchange optics housing using the same screws and holes.

12. Assemble the camera and the lens as described in Chapter 9.1.

9.3 Preparing the measuring instrument for calibration


The micrometer standard for calibrating the image scale - CP34 is used to calibrate the currently
used image scale of the measuring instrument’s optical components with the
ADVANCE software at an ambient temperature of 5 to max. 40 °C.

The standard CP34 consists of a small glass plate with accurately calculated and precisely
printed lines.

 The descriptions of the steps required in the ADVANCE software relate to Version 1.4
or higher.

 Before calibrating possibly check with a sample drop, if the zoom of the objective is suitable.

 Calibrate the image scale with CP34 whenever the zoom of the optics was altered.

9.3.1 Safety instructions for using glass standards

Glass parts can break if not handled correctly. This could lead to you cutting yourself.

 Take care at all times and follow these instructions.

 Wear gloves when using glass standards and avoid scratching the glass surfaces.

 After use, replace the standard in the packaging.

Remove all broken glass that may be present in a safe way (with cut-resistant gloves or a
suction device).

 Check the CP34 for scratches or other damage at regular intervals depending on how
frequently it is used.

9.3.2 Preparing the measuring instrument

1. Ensure that as little ambient light as possible falls in the camera.

3. Check the horizontal alignment of the sample table with the help of a spirit level and if
necessary correct the alignment using the adjusting feet.

9.3.3 Preparations in the ADVANCE software

 For creating a measurement, select under Drop Shape and Choose a measurement method
the measurement method Sessile drop suitable for CP34.

9.3.4 Positioning the standard on the sample table

1. Place the micrometer standard CP34 on the sample table, so that the standard is located
below the piezo dosing unit and in the middle of the sample table.

 The side of the standard on which the lines are printed must face the camera. The larger
foot of the standard is on the right in camera direction.

2. Align the standard at right angles to the optical axis.

 If a sample table support is available, you can use its gridlines to align the standard.
Otherwise, use a pointed tool (e.g. tweezers) to carefully position the standard.

9.3.5 Setting the image focus

 Adjust the focus so that the lines of the standard in the camera image are displayed sharply.

9.3.6 Aligning the camera horizontally

 If the camera image is not aligned horizontally, the camera must be rotated ( Chapter 9.1).

9.3.7 Adjusting the image brightness

 It is often necessary to correct the image focus after adjusting the brightness.

 Adjust the brightness of the camera image so that the line edges are displayed with high
contrast and are not overexposed (i.e. with a light gray background).

9.3.8 Calibrating in ADVANCE

 After calibration using the standard, do not correct the zoom of the optics again.

 There are dark lines on the standard and bright spaces in-between. Each dark line has a
bright space belonging to it. One line pair consisting of one dark line and one bright space
corresponds to an object size of 0.1 mm.

1. In the Live view under Open/close image calibration , choose the Manual option.

2. For the following step in the Live view, use the button to display a full image and
possibly the button to zoom in further.

3. Move the mouse pointer onto the blue horizontal line.

4. With the appeared double arrow drag the horizontal line approximately to the center of
the image.

5. With the drag points (item 1, see following figure) move the two vertical blue lines
horizontally. Include as many of the displayed line pairs as possible with the two vertical blue
lines, but at least with one line pair. Position the vertical blue lines exactly at the outer edges
of one dark line and one bright space.

 Do not zoom the objective to capture many line pairs.

 If the line edges and the vertical blue lines don’t parallel, you can align the camera
horizontally again ( Chapter 9.1) or tilt the horizontal and vertical lines by means of the
two drag points (item 2, see figure above) conforming with the line edges.

6. For the Object size, enter the respective value, depending on how many line pairs of dark
lines and bright spaces you include with the vertical lines. In the exemplary figure above, the
five included line pairs correspond to an object size of 0.5 mm.

9.3.9 Cleaning

NOTICE
Do not use rough or fluffy cloths for cleaning the CP34.

If there is dust on the standard:

 Remove the dust with a soft, lint-free cloth.

If there is other contamination:

1. Clean the standard with water and rinsing agent.

2. Rinse the standard with distilled water.

3. Dry the standard with an air dryer set to a maximum of 40 °C. Alternatively, wipe the
standard dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

9.4 Note for reverse assembling of software-


controlled optics

NOTICE
When reassembling from a DSA100M to a DSA100 setup, the correct order for occupying
the connections at the electronics board must be taken care of in case of optics with
software-controlled zoom and focus.

1. Remove the electronics board for the optics from the BUS board.

2. The two multi-pole plugs at the optics module and the two connectors at the electronics
board for the optics are marked with the letters Z for zoom and F for Focus.

Connect the plugs to the corresponding connectors.

3. Plug the electronics board in a free slot of the BUS board.

9.5 Changing the camera (IEEE-1394 to USB 3.0)

NOTICE
Before changing the camera, please install the required software driver from the data carrier
of the ADVANCE Software ( ADVANCE user manual).

1. Remove the old data transmission cable (IEEE-1394).

2. Loosen the knurled screw on the tube housing.

3. Remove the old camera by unscrewing it anticlockwise together with the adjusting tube.

4. Hold the camera down with the adjusting tube and unscrew the adjusting tube from the
camera anticlockwise.

5. Remove the protective cover from the new camera and place it on the old camera.

6. Screw the new camera clockwise into the adjusting tube as far as it will go, and keep holding
the camera with the objective downwards.

7. Insert the camera and adjusting tube into the tube housing.

8. Plug the new USB 3.0 cable into the camera and connect the camera directly with a
USB 3.0 connection of the computer.

Two different micro-dosing units are available:

 DS3234 for 60 pL

 DS3232 for 20 pL

 For DS3232, only the mounting procedure to the DSA100M is described in this manual.
For the procedure for filling, setting up and cleaning the dosing unit please read the
manufacturer‘s manual provided.

NOTICE
To ensure that the dosing unit can function, please observe the following instructions:

 Only use pure water or diiodomethane as drop liquids. Please contact KRÜSS if you want to
use other liquids.

 Only use liquids which are free of particles. Fill the dosing unit using micro filters and
syringes as provided by KRÜSS.

 Protect the piezo tip of the dosing unit with the protective cap when measurements
are finished.

 Degas water with the help of a vacuum pump. Perform the filling procedure at the same
temperature as the measurements are performed to avoid air bubble formation.

 Particles and air bubbles can lead to the following difficulties:

 No dispensing takes place at all.

 Small satellite drops are formed beneath one main drop.

 The drop is not formed directly underneath the piezo tip.

10.4 Degassing liquid with the vacuum set SP01

NOTICE
 Do not use volatile liquids (e.g. Diiodmethane).

1. Attach the connecting adapter to the vacuum tube.

2. Connect the adapter to a vacuum pump.

3. Insert the gasket with the single hole into the open screw cap.

4. Half-fill the bottle with the liquid o be degassed. Screw the cap onto the bottle.

5. Thread the free end of the vacuum tube through the hole in the gasket.

NOTICE
 Let not dip the free end into the liquid.

6. Switch on the vacuum pump. Apply the vacuum for about 15 minutes.

7. Vent the system by slowly turning the venting screw. Remove the open cap. Screw the
closing cap onto the bottle.

10.5 Filling the dosing unit DS3234


1. Remove the protective caps from the piezo tip and the fill plug.

2. Fill one of the provided syringes with the degassed liquid. Attach a nylon filter to the syringe.
Hold the filter upwards and press the air out of the filter until a drop appears at the tip.
Dispose a few drops.

3. Attach the syringe equipped with the filter to the fill plug of the dosing unit. Inject the liquid
slowly and continuously until a drop is formed at the tip of the dosing unit.

 Take care that the tubing of the dosing unit is filled without air bubbles. If air bubbles
are in the piezo-dosing unit and cannot be removed by slowly pressing more liquid
through the system, the filling procedure must be repeated.

 When dismounted you can open the dosing unit and check if air bubbles are inside
the tube.

4. Remove the syringe with the filter from the dosing unit.

 Take care that the drop at the piezo tip is not drawn back into the dosing unit when
removing the syringe.

5. Carefully blot the tip and wipe the side edges of the dosing unit with a fluff-free cotton wool
tip to remove moisture.

NOTICE
The piezo tip is very delicate.

 Do not use force to wipe the liquid from the tip.

 Do not touch the tip with fingers.

 Moisture on the tip’s surface will affect the emerging jet of liquid.

10.6 Cleaning the micro-dosing unit using


the vacuum set SP01

10.6.1 Preparations

1. Insert the gasket with two holes into the open screw cap.

2. Thread the free end of the vacuum tube through the larger hole in the gasket so that it just
reaches into the bottle.

3. Thread the free end of the thinner tube with the Luer-Lock adapter attached through the
smaller hole so that the tube reaches the bottom.

10.6.2 Remove residual liquid

1. Put a disposable syringe onto the fill plug and slowly remove the liquid.

2. Put the Luer-Lock adapter onto the fill plug of the dosing unit.

3. Switch on the vacuum pump so that air flows through the dosing unit in order to dry it.

10.6.3 Cleaning the piezo tip

If particles inside the tip disturb the dispensing process the tip must be cleaned my rinsing it.

1. Put the Luer-Lock adapter onto the fill plug of the dismounted dosing unit.

2. Let the piezo tip dip into filtered clean water.

3. Switch on the vacuum pump. Close the venting screw so that water is sucked though the
dosing unit into the bottle.

 If particles cannot be removed with this procedure, cleaning may be improved with an

11 Dispensing drops and focusing


Targeted dispensing of a drop and obtaining a drop image requires some experience. The
following section provides information about how to obtain a good drop image as fast
as possible.

11.1 Preparations
 Switch on the DSA100M.

 Start the ADVANCE software.

 How to control the dosing system and (if available) the software-controlled micro-table with
the ADVANCE software is described in the ADVANCE user manual.

11.2 Finding the dispensing position

 The descriptions ‘left-right’ and ‘back-front’ are related to the front view of the instrument.

1. Open the zoom of the lens to image a region as wide as possible.

2. Place a flat rectangular object onto the sample stage so that it is positioned in the optical
path. The edge of the object must be aligned to the edge of the sample stage.

3. Move the sample stage upwards until the object appears in the lower margin of the
video image.

4. Move the sample stage in left-right direction so that the camera facing edge of the sample
is imaged.

5. If available, acquire a video image of the instrument camera facing edge of the sample with
the optional observation optics.

6. Move the piezo tip downward as close to the sample as possible. The back-front-position of
the tip should be aligned to the horizontal center of the lens.

7. Dispense a drop with a high liquid flow rate until it can be observed visually. The optional
observation optics helps finding the drop.

Change the position of the tip so that the drop is dispensed exactly on the observed edge of
the object.

8. Change the position of the piezo tip in back-front-direction while continuously dispensing
liquid until the drop can be observed in the video image. Change the zoom to fit the drop
size to the image and adjust the position of the piezo tip so that the drop is dispensed in the
center position of the image.

9. Adjust the left-right-position of the piezo tip so that the dispensing position is imaged as
sharp as possible.

10. The object can now be exchanged with an actual sample. Then, move the sample stage to
image the desired dosing position.

Once the dosing position was found it does not stay absolutely constant. For example, changing
the liquid flow rate can lead to an off-set. However, usually only slight adjustments of the
dispensing position are necessary. It is a good idea to keep the position of the piezo tip and to
write down the positions of the micrometer screws.

1. Dismount all available axes so that the base spacer is exposed.

2. Dismount the base spacer. To do this, loosen the three hexagon socket screws.

3. Mount the frame of the observation optics onto the base plate of the DSA100M using the
previously loosened screws.

4. Fix the adjusting unit at the frame. To do this, screw the two set screws provided into the
inserted nuts.

 Eventually, the nuts must be shifted along the rail.

5. Lead the tube with the camera attached through the opening of the adjusting unit. Fix the
tube with the set screw.

6. Connect the cable coming from the camera to a USB 2.0 port of the computer. Wait until the
installed drivers were found.

12.2 Starting image transfer


 Start the SimpleLive program. If the suggested start menu folder was used during
installation, the program will be found under IDS  uEye  Samples.

You can switch the live image on and off with the buttons and .

 Please refer to the manufacturer's documentation for other IDS software installed.

12.3 Pre-adjusting the observation optics

 Fine adjustment is carried out by means of the micrometer screws on the frame of the
observation optics. Pre-adjustment is necessary to ensure that the area of the sample to be
observed lies within the fine adjustment range.

1. Place an object on the sample table. Position the object so that it can be seen by the
measuring optics.

2. Adjust the left-hand micrometer screw so that the lens is aligned with the object in the
horizontal direction.

3. Set the middle micrometer screw (y-position of optics) and the right-hand micrometer screw
(focus) to approximately the middle of the overall control range.

4. Carry out the following steps alternately until the object lies in the center of the image and is
displayed in focus:

 Coarse height adjustment: Loosen the two knurled screws and slide the frame along
the stand.

 Viewing angle adjustment: Loosen the hexagon socket locking screw in the swivel joint.
Turn the optics and fix them at the required viewing angle. At the same time, align the
camera so that the image of the object is horizontal.

 Coarse focus adjustment: Loosen the tube fixing screw. Pull out the tube and fix it at the
position of maximum focus.

12.4 Fine adjustment


Fine adjustment is carried out with the help of the three micrometer screws on the frame:

 If you did not obtain the measuring instrument directly from KRÜSS but from a dealer,
please contact your dealer first. He may be able to rectify the damage. If not, contact
KRÜSS Technical Support directly.

1. Contact KRÜSS Technical Support ( Chapter 1.5).

You will be given a repair number.

2. Please quote this number in your covering letter when you dispatch the instrument.

Send us the measuring instrument or accessories

1. Do not dispatch the measuring instrument or accessories without consulting our


Technical Support.

 Components which are not directly affected by the damage may also have to be sent
with the instrument. Our Technical Support will advise you on the necessary scope of the
shipment with regard to an appropriate packaging and provide assistance to a possible
disassembly of the measuring instrument.

2. Remove liquids (e.g. samples, temperature control liquid) completely from the instrument
and the accessories.

3. Clean the instrument or accessories before dispatch. This applies particularly if there is
contamination due to hazardous substances.

4. Pack all components separately which were packed separately when the instrument was
supplied. Do not dispatch the unit in the assembled state.

5. If the instrument or accessories were provided with transportation locks, refit these
before shipping.

6. For shipment use the original packaging of the instrument or accessories. If you no longer
have the original packaging, KRÜSS recommends the order of a new original packaging for

LSA) to KRÜSS standing on a pallet to ensure transport security.
