GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY

Global Handwashing Day is an annual global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness
and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an easy, effective, and affordable
way to prevent diseases and save lives. It is an opportunity to design, test, and replicate creative ways to
encourage people to wash their hands with soap at critical times.

The first Global Handwashing Day was held in 2008, when over 120 million children around the
world washed their hands with soap in more than 70 countries. Since 2008, community and national
leaders have used Global Handwashing Day to spread the word about handwashing, build sinks and
tippy taps, and demonstrate the simplicity and value of clean hands. Each year, over 200 million people
are involved in celebrations in over 100 countries around the world. Global Handwashing Day is
endorsed by a wide array of governments, international institutions, civil society organizations, NGOs,
private companies, and individuals.

The 2017 Global Handwashing Day theme is “Our hands, our future!” This theme reminds us
that handwashing protects our own health but also allows us to build our own future as well as those of
our communities and the world.

Pursuant to the United Nation’s (UN) declaration of a Global Handwashing Day (every 15 th of
October) and Philippine House of Representatives Resolution No. 1436 otherwise known as the
“Implementation of Annual Global Handwashing Day”, Global Handwashing Day (GHD) Celebration has
been institutionalized in all schools of Region III.

As one of the public integrated schools in the Division of Cabanatuan City, Lazaro Francisco
Integrated School supported and conducted the Global Handwashing Celebration. Each pupil observed
and followed the proper steps in handwashing. The activity was conducted successfully.
NUTRITION MONTH

“Health is wealth”, a very famous saying that has huge and significant meaning in a human’s life.
That is why human body cannot function properly without proper diet and literally cannot be productive
in all aspects of life.

July is dubbed as Nutrition Month. Every private and government agency supports the
government’s celebration of Nutrition Month in our country. The National Nutrition Council (NNC) led
the whole nation in the celebration of the 2017 Nutrition Month in July. The main purpose of this
Celebration is to disseminate nutrition-related messages to all Filipinos through the focal theme
“Healthy Diet, Gawing Habit -for Life!”

The Celebration aims to promote the consumption of healthier foods and discourage the eating
of unhealthy foods, encourage the families and individuals to eat a balanced diet with a variety of food
in the right quantity and maintaining an ideal body weight to reduce obesity and non-communicable
diseases, create awareness among them on making the right choices of food, and encourage food
industry, producers, distributors and farmers and make healthy foods available for all.

In support of this developmental endeavor, the Department of Education (DepEd) enjoins all
schools to participate in this Celebration by undertaking meaningful activities which will highlight the
importance of good nutrition, healthy diet and healthy lifestyle.

As one of the public integrated schools in the Division of Cabanatuan City, Lazaro Francisco
Integrated School supported and celebrated the Nutrition Month. The event was celebrated
successfully.
EARTHQUAKE DRILL

A long time ago, people believed that accidents such as earthquakes and other unfortunate
events are the workings of a supernatural being that is beyond their control. But today, we know better
than to wait for disaster to strike us. Over the years, people learned that disaster can be prevented with
proper knowledge and preparation. This concept gave rise to Earthquake Drill which aims to remove or
minimize hazardous incidences, lessen unnecessary actions, and disseminate relevant information.

Unfortunately, life-threatening accidents arising from untoward incidents are as common now
as it was before. A good reason for this could be the fact that not all are well-informed and some may
still be stuck with notion that disasters are the wrath of some gods. The most vulnerable to the said
disasters are the children and the elderly for they are prone to miscalculations and sadly, their survival
rate is left to chance.

Being the seeds that will continue the next generation, it is a must for pupils to learn by heart
the proper and logical way of acting when faced with disasters such as earthquake. This could not only
assure their own safety but could also help their families be well-informed. Children early in their
elementary years should be subjected to regular safety earthquake and fire drills in order to make
surviving disasters second nature.

In line with the campaign of the Department of Education (Deped) in equipping the pupils with
the Knowledge, proper attitude and skills on what to do in case of a natural an earthquake or fire, the
Lazaro Francisco Integrated School conducted earthquake and fire drills which were successfully
conducted and implemented.
WASTE MANAGEMENT

Thousands of years ago humans simply dug a hole and buried their refuse and waste. This was
an effective technique for these early people because their population was relatively small and they did
not produce waste on the same scale or with the levels of complexity that modern humans do. Burying
the rubbish helped to prevent bugs and rodents from becoming a nuisance and spreading diseases.

In the modern world burying all of our rubbish is not a sustainable solution. While primitive
humans produced very little waste, and that which was produced would biodegrade quickly, modern
humans produce much larger amounts of waste, much of which is not biodegradable. Additionally, many
types of waste may be damaging to the soil, ground water and surrounding habitat.

Waste management and rubbish disposal play an extremely important role in the global
cleanliness and sustainability drive, with people’s health and the conservation of resources being the
responsibility of every government. To ease the pressure on government agencies, numerous privately-
managed organizations also play a part in these waste management and recycling programs. In many
cities it means that local government agencies have been left with the responsibility of overseeing the
work done by these privately held organizations.

The most important reason for waste management is the protection of the environment and the
health of the population. Rubbish and waste can cause air and water pollution. Rotting garbage is also
known to produce harmful gases that mix with the air and can cause breathing problems in people. By
inspecting the vegetation around landfill sites carefully you can determine the damage that can be
caused by garbage and waste if left untreated in the open. To address this problem modern waste
management professionals place garbage in lined holes and use bacteria to help facilitate its rapid
decomposition. Rotting garbage and waste emanates a foul smell that can cause nausea among people
who come into contact with it. It can also be a source for waterborne diseases such as cholera and
abdominal conditions and discomfort.

Waste management are all the processes involved with managing waste—both solid and
liquid—from its inception to its final disposal. The problem of efficiently managing waste is a global one
which means it is up to every individual to discuss the need for efficiency in a bid to raise awareness on
its effect on earth’s ecosystem.

In compliance with DepEd Order No. 5, s.2014, the Lazaro Francisco Integrated School
conducted the Waste Management Program which was successfully implemented.
