A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 3

I. Objectives:

1. Identify figures or objectswith line of symmetry

2. Define what symmetry is
3. Draw the line of symmetry
4. Show cooperation in performing the activities

II. Subject Matter:

 Topic: Line of Symmetry

 References: Understanding Math Essentials pp. 372-374
 Materials: cartolina, pentle pens, envelopes, real symmetrical objects, cut out
shapes, television, powerpoint
 Values to be learned: Equality

III. Procedure:

A. Daily Routine

1. Prayer

2. Greetings

3. Classroom Management

4. Attendance

5. Review

Ask pupils the different kind of lines previously learned.

6. Drill

Tell pupils to pick one shape inside the basket. Find to his/her classmate
the pair of shape that he/she picked. Then, post it on the board.

B. Motivation

Call one pupil to go in front.

Ask: When you look at the mirror, what do you see?

Yes, of course. We see the exact image of us as we present ourselves in the
mirror.
Say: I am going to present this halfof butterfly in the mirror.
Ask: What have you observed in a half of butterfly?

C. Developmental Activities:

1. Presentation

Show them an illustration that made of cutout shapes.

Ask:
What do you see in the illustration?
What have you noticed in the house, tree, sun and truck?

Tell them to get one shape they see in the illustration. Tell them to fold it
in the middle then open it.
Ask:
What have you noticed in the shape? (The shape divides into two)
What divides the shape? (The folded line)
What have you observed in both side of the shape? (They are the same)

Tell them to draw a line in the folded line.

2. Analysis/Discussion
Bring out the idea that the line they draw works like a mirror. If both sides
are equally the same, we call it symmetry and the line that divides the two is
called line of symmetry.
Tell them that there are many ways to know if an object has line of
symmetry. We can find it by drawing a line horizontally, vertically and
diagonally.

3. Practice
Show different objects and ask pupilswhich are symmetrical. Tell them to
point out where is the line of symmetry on that object.
D. Generalization:
How do we know if the figure or object is symmetrical?
What is line symmetry?
E. Application
Group Work.

Group 1.
Direction: Look the picture inside the envelope. Categorized the pictures which are
symmetrical or not symmetrical.
Group 2.
Direction: Draw the other half to make symmetrical figure.
Group 3.
Direction: Draw a line of symmetry in the given objects.

IV. Evaluation:
Direction: Put a check on the blank if the given object shows line of symmetry. Then,
draw the line of symmetry on it and cross out if it does not.

____1.

____2.

____3.

____4.

____5.
V. Assignment:
On a bond paper, draw five (5) symmetrical objects that you can see inside or outside
your house. Color your drawings and show the line of symmetry.
