NCTM Standards, Common Core Standards addressed: NCTM: Investigate and


predict the results of putting together and taking apart two- and three-dimensional
shapes. Common Core: Reason with shapes and their attributes. Compose two- or
three dimensional shapes to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from
the composite shape.

Procedure:
1. The Teacher Will (TTW): Distribute a variety of tangrams to all students.
2. TTW: Show on the board with magnetic tangrams how multiple shapes can
create new shapes.
3. TTW: Request that students work in pairs to create the shapes listed on their
worksheet, using as few and as many pieces as possible.
4. TSW: Work together to compose a triangle, square, rectangle, and pentagon
using tangram pieces.
5. TSW: Record how many pieces they used to create the new shapes.
6. TTW: Request responses from the class as to how many tangram pieces they
used for each new shape, and record them on the board.
7. TTW: Ask students what shapes could be used to make new shapes and how
they chose to compose them, as well as what shapes were easiest and most
difficult to build.
