YORUBA WEDDINGS
Marriage rites among the Yorubas of Nigeria have changed with the coming of western civilization. In
spite of this, the ceremony still has some of its traditional aspects. It begins with an alarena (go-between) whose
role is instrumental in working out a marriage agreement between the families of the intending couples. The
alarena visits the girl’s parents to tell them that the family of the boy has seen a flower, another way of calling the
girl, which they would want to pluck. The girl’s family will then ask an ‘ifa’ oracle (traditional priest) to
investigate the background of the boy’s family to determine his suitability for their daughter. If the family of the
girl consents, a date is agreed upon for the traditional engagement. A long list of essential marriage items is
drawn up which the family of the groom-to-be is expected to provide for the bride’s family.
These items include rice, yam tuber, palm oil, kola nut, bottles of honey, alligator pepper, crates of drinks,
cartons of beer, agreement fees for the mother and father. This used to be called bride price in the old days. The
suitor is expected to buy a portmanteau for his wife-to-be: clothes, watches, jewellery, shoes and cosmetics. The
engagement ceremony presents a rare opportunity for both sets of parents and extended families to meet formally.
It is the occasion to solemnize and bless the marriage.
Today, however, Yoruba marriage customs have been invaded by foreign cultures. Parents are less
involved in the choosing of partners. Many couples have a Christian and a traditional ceremony. Yoruba
weddings can be a massive affair. Streets are closed off and marquees and loud speakers are set up. Local
musicians provide entertainment, and cows, rams and goats are slaughtered to celebrate the occasion. It is the
time to show one’s wealth. The grander the wedding appears, the more assured the girl’s parents will be that the
man will be able to take care of their daughter, they won’t mind if he had to borrow money for the occasion.
