REVIEW: MOMENTUM

Directions: Box your final answer. Don’t forget to include units.

1. When the retro-rockets of a 1230-kg spaceship are fired, the net force on the spaceship is 3210 N. How
long must the retro-rockets fire in order to increase the spaceship’s speed from 45.6 m/s to 78.9 m/s?

2. After sliding down a snow-covered hill on an inner tube, Rachel is coasting across a level snowfield at a
constant speed of 2.7 m/s. Monica runs after her at a velocity of 4.5 m/s and hops on the tube. How fast do
the two girls slide across the snow together on the inner tube? Rachel’s mass if 58 kg and Monica’s is 54 kg.
Ignore the mass of the inner tube.

3. A car (mass = 1100 kg) is traveling at 32 m/s when it collides head-on with an SUV (mass = 2500 kg)
traveling in the opposite direction. In the collision, the two vehicles come to a halt. At what speed was the
SUV traveling?

4. A model rocket is constructed with a motor that can provide a total impulse of 29.0 N∙s. The mass of the
rocket is 0.175 kg. What is the speed that this rocket achieves when launched from rest?

5. A baseball (m = 149 g) approaches a bat horizontally at a speed of 40.2 m/s and is hit straight back with a
speed of 45.6 m/s. What is the change in momentum of the ball? If the ball is contact with the bat for a
time of 1.10 ms, what is the average force exerted on the ball by the bat?

6. An internal explosion breaks a 5.82-kg object, initially at rest, into two pieces, one with three times the mass
of the other. If the heavier piece shoots off to the right a speed of 12.4 m/s, with what velocity does the
lighter piece move?

7. A 1060-kg car moving west at 16.0 m/s collides with and locks onto a 1830-kg stationary car. The coefficient
of friction between the tires and the road is 0.750. How far do the cars skid before stopping?

8. A 232-g orange traveling at 3.43 m/s strikes a 101-g clementine. The orange is deflected off with a speed of
1.2 m/s at an angle 34° from its original path. Find the velocity of the clementine. Report the direction as
an angle relative to the original direction of the orange.

9. Consider the frictionless track shown below. Block A (mass 2.40 kg) is launched at a speed of 17.2 m/s. It
collides perfectly inelastically with Block B (mass 1.80 kg), and together the blocks travel up the ramp,
which is inclined at 32.0°. What distance do the blocks travel along the ramp before instantaneously
stopping and sliding back down the ramp?

A B
32.0°
