LV & Control Cable Termination

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose of Method Statement

This method is for Connections and Terminations of Low Voltage & Control Cables
to Switchgear, Panel Boards, Site Equipments, Junction Boxes … in accordance
with contract specifications, related manufacturers' installation procedures.

1.2 Scope of Work:

Installation of cable connections and terminations to connect cables to Switchgear,

site equipment, panels, junction boxes, substations, instruments and control rooms,
in accordance with contract drawings, related contract detailed drawings and
specifications.

1.3 Related Documents:

Cable schedule, drumming schedule, electrical power routing layout.

1.4 Equipment:

 Compression Tool and Die.

 Hand Crimp for Control wires.
 Regular mechanical & Electrical tools

1.5 Safety

All operation involved in the execution of works will be done in accordance with
Health, Safety and Environmental Manual

The safety officers, supervisors and Foremen will be responsible for ensuring the
safe implementation of the work.

2 PREPARATION OF WORK:

- The Preparation of work which would be ensured before work commencement is

such as but not limited to the follows:

2.1 Ref. to the Equipment drawings for specified cable termination work.
2.2 Ref. to Manufacturers' data sheets and installation recommendation.
2.3 Material & tools preparations and mobilization to work area.
2.4 Area site supervisor should explain the work steps to the qualified termination
crew.
2.5 Commence with work under supervision of crew foreman, area supervisor, and
site engineer.

3 METHOD OF WORK:

Following the above mentioned contract specifications and detailed drawings; the
method of work will be as follows:

(A) Low Voltage Cable Terminations:

1) Ensure the required cable length for connection in panel / motor termination
box and cut the end accordingly

2) Use the approved and correct size of cable termination lug that fit with cable
size.

3) Use the correct compression tools and dies to mach the various sizes of cable
lugs.

4) Keep the insulation of conductor as close possible to the point of connection

in order to avoid the risk of short circuit between adjacent terminals.

5) Check the polarity or phasing before final connection.

6) Identify each terminal and conductor in accordance with the drawing.

7) Perform insulation and continuity test.

8) Seal the cable opening including spare opening with the approved sealant
material.

(B) Control Cable Terminations:

1) Ensure that the earth continuity is achieved when installing glands into metal
enclosure by Check that all cable glands are correctly selected with the proper
size according to the cable outer diameter and the proper type suitable for the
application.

2) Confirm that the female threading of hub in terminal box / junction box is
suitable for the male threading in the cable gland, if different, use proper
adapters with certificates.

3) Ensure that minimum 5 threads of cable gland enter into the hub of the
terminal box / junction box.

4) Keep the length of conductor from which the protective covering has been
removed to a minimum.

5) Don’t remove the protective outer sheath covering before entering the
weatherproof seal. The rigid clamping of the armor within the gland and the
intimate contact between the threaded components of the gland and the
enclosure.

6) In a non metallic enclosure ensures that the earth continuity is achieved by

connecting cable armor wire to the earth terminal in the equipment.

7) Ensure that all the single core conductors of the same circuits including the
neutral shall pass through the same non magnetic gland plate.

8) Check that armored single core power cables are earthed at one end only
(upstream side).

9) Seal the entrance of cables to electrical panels to avoid dust inlet.

10) Turn the motor terminal box, where necessary, for a correct connection of
the cable.

4 JOB SAFETY ANALYSIS

4.1 The job safety analysis (JSA) is a step by step review of a specific job
with the aim to identify the potential hazards associated with each
step of the job and then eliminate, reduce or control the hazards
before the start of the work.

4.2 The JSA will be conducted to ensure that work does not start without
testing the risk assessment through evaluation by the supervisors and
employees who will be involved in the work, at the workface and
immediately prior to commencing work.

4.3 All PPE's shall be used like helmet, goggles, safety footwear, gloves
and safety harness if required.

4.4 All manpower, who are involved in the installation activities shall be
informed of the hazards and risk factors through tool box meetings
prior starting any activity.

4.5 During the installation all electrical equipment shall be properly

earthed, color coded and inspected as per CONTRACTOR
requirements.

4..6 There shall be ongoing housekeeping activities undertaken by Accurate to

ensure that all work areas are clean and tidy.

4.7 A HSE has to be carried out:

4.7.1 Every time critical new work is identified.

4.7.2 At any time when a job requires major procedure modifications.

4.7.3 If there are any significant changes from previous HSE that could
affect the validity of the HSE I.e. changes in weather conditions,
changes in material, equipment, etc.

4.8 HSE steps:

4.8.1 Break job into observable steps.

4.8.2 Identify for each step the potential hazard and potential
accident causes.

4.8.3 Specify control measures for each potential hazard/accident

cause specified.

4.8.4 Supervisor reviews all of the above with workers who are
expected to contribute their own suggestions for ensuring that
work can be conducted safely.

4.8.5 One member of the crew writes up the HSE report.
