Revolutionary United Front (RUF)- a rebel army started in


Sierra Leone in 1991. They were fighting against the government’s army

Genocide- The deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially


those of a particular ethnic group or nation

Brown-Brown- A very strong drug, mixing gunpowder and cocaine,


that was given to child soldiers to ease pain

Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC)- a group of Sierra


Leone soldiers that tried to bring peace and end the war between
the state and the rebels (RUF)

● Sierra Leone is located on the west coast of the continent Africa.


● It’s about 28,000 square miles with a population of about 5.7 million people.
● Today, it’s a constitutional monarchy. Today’s president of Sierra Leone is Ernest
Koroma.
● Sierra Leone had a decade-long civil war from March 23, 1991 to January 18, 2002.
● Former army corporal Foday Sankoh began the RUF (rebels) and began to
campaign against President Momoh
● In Sierra Leone there were about 5,000 - 10,000 child
soldiers during the civil war
● Today there are about 300,000 child soldiers in the world.
● Around 40 percent of all child soldiers are females

● You will be given a paper that tells you if you are a rebel or a soldier
● On the paper there will be events that both sides experienced and you will have to choose which option is
most realistic depending on the scene
● Read over the events as a group and help each other figure out the answer then share why you chose that
answer
