Tutorial Sheet #2
Trigonometry

1 Basic Trigonometry

1. Covert the following from degrees to radians:

1. 315o
2. 28o
3. 75o

Covert the following from radians to degrees:

4. 2π
5. π/7
6. 7π/8

2. A tree is 50 feet tall. You measure the angle of elevation from the ground where you
are standing to the top of the tree and get 50 degrees. How far away from the tree
are you?

3. The height of a building is 250 ft. What is the angle of elevation from a point on the
level ground 200 ft away from the base of the building?

4. The shadow of a tower, when the angle of elevation of the Sun is 30º is found to be
40 meters longer than when it is 45º. Find the height of the Tower.

5. The earth, moon, and sun create a right triangle during the first quarter moon. The
distance from the earth to the moon is about 240,002.5 miles. What is the distance
between the sun and the moon?

6. An airplane departs city A and travels at a bearing of 100°. City B is directly south of
city A. When the plane is 200 miles east of city B, how far has the plan travelled?
How far apart are city A and City B?
2 Trigonometric Identities

1. Prove the following identities by showing that the L.H.S is equal to the R.H.S
a) sin(θ) cot(θ) = cos(θ)
b) cos(θ − π) = − cos (θ)
c) cot(θ) sec(θ) = csc(θ)
d) tan(α) + cot(α) =sec (α) + csc(α)
e) tan(θ + π/2) = − cot (θ)
f) sin(α + β) − sin(α − β) = 2 cos (α) sin (α)
1
g) =csc (θ)
√1−cos2 (θ)
sin(θ)
h) =sec(θ) tan (θ)
cos2 (θ)
sin2 x ( sec x +csc x)
i) =1+ tan x
cos x tan x
cos(x )−cos3 x
j) =sin( x) cos ( x)
sin(x )

2. Use the special triangle and trigonometric identities to find:

a) cos 60o
b) cos2 30o
c) csc π/6
d) sec π/3

3. Derive the following trigonometric identities:

a) tan2 θ + 1 = sec2 θ
b) cos 2α = cos2 α - sin2 α
c) tan 2α = 2 tan α / 1 – tan2 α
