Office Hours: 3:00 – 5:00PM, ThF, otherwise by appointment
TAs: 1. Sushant Anand, Rhodes 921, 513‐556‐2830, sushant1206@gmail.com
2. Huayan Liang, Rhodes 921, 513‐556‐2830, talentwolf@gmail.com
TA Office Hours: MWTh 4:00 – 6:00PM
Pre‐requisites:
Heat transfer, Fluid mechanics, Thermodynamics
References:
(1) Heat transfer by Incropera & DeWitt or Holman, (2) Fluid mechanics by Frank White,
(3) Thermodynamics by Moran & Shapiro
Goals:
Familiarize the students with laboratory methods and techniques as well as data acquisition
and processing by utilizing the experiments in the areas of heat transfer, fluid mechanics
and thermodynamics. Fundamental concepts are employed to verify some laws using the
lab experiments. The lecture periods are used to review and develop the analysis pertaining
to these experiments
Class‐notes:
No textbook needed, instead, the notes and handouts will be posted online in Blackboard. It
is also recommended to use the above‐cited references throughout the course.
Course Outline:
1. Lecture:
The following experimental technique topics will be covered in the class lecture in addition
to the theoretical background of lab experiments.
‐ Temperature Measurement
‐ Pressure Measurement
‐ Measurement of Flows (Volume flow measurement)
1
‐ Signal & Data Analysis for heat transfer and fluid mechanics
2. Lab Experiments:
The following experiments are available in the lab. In a quarter, Five topics are selected
for experiment:
1. Turbulent flow Heat Exchanger
2. Extend Heat Transfer
3. Heat transfer and Fluid mechanics Analogy
4. Cross‐Flow Convective Heat Transfer
5. Radiation – verification of basic laws
Computer usage: Spread sheet for small calculations and some software for plotting
Attendance:
Students are expected to attend all classes (please be on time). Even though most of the course
materials are well covered by the posted lecture notes and text, there may be some
information that is discussed exclusively in the class. If missed the class, you are still responsible
for learning the material taught during your absence.
Disclaimer:
Assignments and course contents are subject to modification when circumstances or sound
pedagogy dictate and as the course progresses. If changes are made, you will be given due
notice.
Academic Integrity:
The University rules, including the student code of conduct and other documented policies of
the department, college and university related to academic integrity will be enforced. Any
violation of these regulations including acts of plagiarism or cheating will be dealt with on an
individual basis according to the severity of the misconduct.
Grading Policy:
Lab Report 60%
Exam 1 20%
Exam 2 20%
_________________________________
Total 100%
1. All exams are closed book and closed notes. You are allowed to prepare one formula
sheet for each exam.
2. Lab report due: in 1 week after Laboratory class.
3. Digital Lab report will be accepted with attaching the photo‐copy of signed data sheet.
4. Digital lab report should be with mathematical calculation sheet (e.g., MS Excel, MatLab,
MathCad…)
2
5. No late report will be graded.
6. No make‐up exams will be given unless an acceptable and verifiable excuse is notified to
the instructor in advance.
7. Final letter Grade is based on absolute evaluation.

LAB REPORT FORMAT
Each lab group is required to submit a brief report for each experiment containing the
following details;
No math. formulas or Greek symbols should be written in this section. For instance,
say, the effectiveness of the counterflow heat exchanger is about 20% higher than
the parallel flow. You can give reference to a formula that you have presented in
another section of the report.
