RS 232 remote control and data log for ECL Comfort 200/300
Application
Principle of operation The ECA 87 module enhances remote access
to the ECL Comfort by adding an RS 232
connection, making it possible to monitor
and control the ECL Comfort 200/300 from
an external device. When the ECA 87 module
is installed, other modules cannot use the
rear slot, and the existing RS 232 port on the
controller's front panel cannot be used.
The ECA 87 module uses a character-based
interface allowing it to communicate with
any terminal emulation program, e.g. Hyper-
Terminal. The interface comprises two
communication protocols, one interactive and
one CRC (cyclic redundancy check) encoded.
In addition to the two protocols, there are
two response formats, a standard and a short
format. The standard format includes "human
readable" text strings, e.g. Done. The short
format uses numerical return codes, e.g. #0100.
By default, the ECA 87 module supports the
LASAT Safire 560 Voice modem. However, it is
possible to change the modem initialisa-tion
strings. This makes it possible to use other
Hayes compatible modems, including GSM
modems.
Monitoring and control via RS 232 communi-
cation allows a remote user to check and
change the performance of the ECL Comfort.
Thus it becomes possible to monitor and
control multiple ECL Comforts individually,
from one location.

The ECA 87 RS 232 remote control and data
log module provides the user with a protected
gateway for the ECL Comfort 200/300,
accessible via modem connection or directly.
The ECA 87 module enables:
- Remote monitoring and control via RS 232
communication.
- Data logging.
- Alarm notification of external recipients, if
supported by the ECL Comfort application*.
* Alarm monitoring is only possible with ECL Comfort 300
version 1.08 and later versions.
The data logging capability of the ECA 87
module allows logging of:
- ECL Comfort parameters.
- The state of all relay outputs.
The maximum number of parameters that can
be logged is 15.
The sampling time can be set in fixed inter-
vals between 5 seconds and 2 hours**.
Values in the data log memory are preserved
during reset and power-down operations. The
ECA 87 will restart the data log after reset and
power-down operations, recording the time
and date of the restart.
When the ECA 87 module is used with an ECL
Comfort 300, version 1.08 or later versions, it
can be set to report alarms, provided that this
is supported by the application. The ECA 87 can
establish a dial-up connection to a user-defined
telephone number of an alarm recipient. The
alarm message can include an ID number
showing the identity of the calling ECL Comfort.
** With a sampling interval of 5 seconds, a maximum of 5
parameters can be logged.
