Assignment 5 – Research Proposal

Aim - The aim of the proposed research is to determine the effectiveness of remote evaluation of
student teachers’ teaching practice as compared to in situ evaluation.
Name of Assessment - The assessment selected for this research proposal is the Practicum (EDTP
5002) of the Postgraduate Diploma in Education, which assesses Secondary school teachers’
teaching practice.
Integration of technology into the assessment - It is proposed that instead of lecturers visiting
students at their schools across Trinidad and Tobago for all of four times per student teacher, that
instead of the third visit, student teachers would be asked to video record one of their teaching
sessions for assessment by their lecturers. Specific guidelines would be provided to students that
may include: (a) Named elements of the lesson / teaching to be captured, (b) File format of the video
and (c) Length of the video.
The third visit is proposed to allow students opportunity to develop and benefit from lecturers’
feedback within their first two visits. As this is an exploratory study, the fourth and final teaching
practice visit, which traditionally attracts the highest proportion of the overall marks would not be
hindered by any issues that may arise through the integration of video in this assessment until ‘kinks’
are ironed out.
Proposed Grading Scheme - The current grading scheme utilizes the first four domains for
assessing student teachers’ growth & development on teaching practice. I propose a fifth domain,
‘Creation of Teaching Video’, be added for assessing the Video Captured Teaching Practice. Student
teachers’ video creation is highly beneficial to their cognitive, affective and motivational processing
(Marsh & Mitchell, 2014) and can be found on Activ’s top ten list for interactivity and pedagogical
value (Bijnens et al., n.d.). This domain will also provide the data needed for the proposed study.

Proposed Publishing of Results - Results of this exploratory study are proposed to be

disseminated through conference presentation at UWI’s Schools of Education biennial conference
and through journal article(s) published in for example ‘Caribbean Curriculum’ or ‘Journal of Teacher
Education’.
