Instruction
Unit 4, Lesson 7: Understanding Tens and Ones (pages 317-321)

Warm Up: The Lion’s Den Rhyme

Activity 1: Represent 2-digit numbers with Secret Code Cards and

drawings.
● Model and Count 10-sticks and ones
○ Students draw ten sticks and ones for a two-digit number (if the number
is 43, they would draw 4 tens and 3 ones).
○ Students count their drawing (10, 20, 30, 40… 41, 42, 43, 44).
○ Students write an equation to represent the tens and ones in the number
(expanded form 40+3=43).
○ Math Talk around this concept.
● Model Place Value
○ Teacher shows the Secret Code Cards for the number 43. Teacher thinks
aloud about what the cards show on the front and the back.
■ Tens and ones for both numbers (back of card)
■ 40 and 3 (front of card)
■ Where is the zero in 43?
○ Math Talk around this concept.

● Model and Count 2-digit Numbers

○ Above concepts are repeated with a new number.
○ Math Talk continues.
○ Students draw the tens and ones for 65.
○ Students count the tens and ones together.
○ Teacher holds up the matching Secret Code Cards. Students identify the
tens and ones.

Activity 2: Represent 2-digit numbers with drawings, equations, and

numerals.
● Draw 10-Sticks and Circles Freehand
○ Students flip boards over to blank side.
○ Students draw 36 with tens and ones freehand.
○ Students count by tens and ones.
○ Students write the (expanded form) equation for 36.
○ Volunteers suggest two-digit numbers for the whole group to draw and
write equations.
○ Students explain how they drew their answers.

● Ways to Show 2-Digit Numbers

○ Above concepts are repeated with pairs.
○ Partner 1: Suggests a number
○ Partner 2: Writes the number
○ Partner 1 and 2: Count the tens and ones and they are drawn and write
the equation together
○ Repeat, partners switch roles

Assignment: Partner Practice with Concepts

Math Around the Room with the following concepts:

● Represent 2-digit numbers as tens and ones with drawings, equations, and
numerals.
● Review concepts: Add and solve story problems to find teen totals (1.OA.A.1)
and use the Make-A-Ten strategy to solve addition equations (1.OA.C.6).
Homework and Remembering p. 87-88
Assessment

Students can self-assess their understanding of the big ideas (represent 2-digit
numbers as tens and ones with drawings, equations, and numerals) through partner
assignment.

Teacher can observe student understanding during whole group instruction and
partner work.

Students will have met the objective when they are able to represent 2-digit numbers
as tens and ones with drawings, equations, and numerals and explain their thinking
and understanding.
