Scholarship Application
Chartwells Thompson School Dining Services is a strategic partnership between
Chartwells and Thompson Hospitality, the largest minority-owned foodservice company
in North America. We have provided foodservice management for Duval County Public
Schools since June 2009.

A one-time $2,500 scholarship, with a laptop and printer, will be awarded for the 2018-
2019 academic year to one student at each Duval County Public High School who plans
to continue on to post-secondary education: colleges, universities, technical or trade
schools.

Scholarship deadline: May 4, 2018


Scholarships post-marked after May 4, 2018 will be returned to sender with no action taken

Eligibility: Scholarship is open to high school seniors who will graduate from a Duval
County Public High School. 1 winner from each school will receive a one-time $2,500
scholarship to be applied towards their post-secondary education.

Requirements:
 2.5 GPA and above
 Acceptance into a post secondary institution
 Provide a copy of official high school transcript
 Submission of essay (1000 words or less)

Essay:
Obesity has been identified as one of the top public health crises facing Americans today because it is
increases the risk of other serious medical conditions such as: high cholesterol, hypertension, sleep
apnea, adult onset diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and depression. In an effort to curb adult obesity,
many agencies have turned their attention to childhood obesity. In 2012, the government passed
legislation to further regulate the nutritional value of foods offered in the school cafeteria and for school
fundraising. Do you believe the government has a role in managing the obesity crisis? If yes, why? If no,
who should be responsible for managing the population’s weight gain and why?
