PREFACE

This report describes works that I carried out during my engineering training on:-
1. Reconstruction of 2km in Jinja municipal council including Main street from Police round
about to town Hall, and Masese Road from Engineers Zikusoka way to Tip Top factory.
2. Rehabilitation of Rwambale-Bweramule Road (18.3km) in Ntoroko district all under CAIIP-
3.

Chapter 1: Contains brief description on my training and responsible experience acquired until
present.
Chapter 2: Describes the design review and revised cost estimates for rehabilitation Reconstruction

Executive Summary

I have been involved in number of civil engineering disciplines ranging from feasibility studies,
construction to construction supervision of infrastructural works. My pupillage training started in
2003 after graduation with an Ordinary Diploma in Building and Civil Engineering (ODBC) from
Uganda technical Collage Lira and later a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (Bsc.CE) from
Kampala International University in 2013, Post graduate Certificate in project planning and
management, Makerere university, Uganda,2013 ,Post graduate Certificate in project monitoring
and Evaluation, Makerere university, Uganda,2013 and Master of Science in Civil engineering
student of Makerere University in 2014 – to date. A copy of my degree and Diploma certificates is
herewith attached in appendix 1 and 2. Azu Properties Ltd engaged me as a civil engineer to
supervise a number of project.
In June/2003 to December/2005, I was involved as a Site Agent on the Rehabilitation of Area
Agricultural Modernisation Programme Roads in Kyenjojo, Sembabule and Kabarole District
(AAMPS) (66KM)– BATCH A

In January/2005 to March/2006, I was professionally involved as an site agent/site Engineer on the


Reconstruction of 2km in Jinja municipal council including Main Street from Police round about to
town Hall, and Masese Road from Engineers Zikusoka way to Tip Top factory.

In May/2015- Aug/2016, I got involved as the Project Engineer on the Rehabilitation of Rwambale-
Bweramule Road (18.3km) in Ntoroko district all under CAIIP-3.

CHAPTER ONE
TRAINING AND RESPONSIBLE EXPERIENCE

1.1 Introduction

This chapter describes my pupillage engineering training experience which started in 2003 after
graduation. I have trained in different areas in road and building construction as detailed in the
respective sections of the carrier report. This report covers the following aspects of my career and
training experience acquired in accordance with the requirements of UIPE as set out in its
guidelines:
 Description of the Tasks on which I was employed

 Clear explanation of the precise positions occupied together with the degree of
responsibilities assigned to me.

 Explanation of any special problems met and on any areas where I obtained extensive
experience where appropriate;

 Indication of size and cost of works;

 Major Challenges experienced;

alignment re-design, Scarification of existing pavement, dumping of CRR
gravel material for base reconstruction, swamp treatment, laying of asphalt
wearing course(bitumen grade 60/70),reinstatement of drainage network and
installation of drainage furniture. Scarification of existing pavement layers,
Granular Sub base and base, and Bituminous carriage way and shoulders.

 Carrying out road inventory so as to instruct the contractor.

 Production of as-built drawings and material investigations on site.

 Determining the value of approved works for payment.

 Checking inspector’s daily reports and any progress related


information,

 Monitoring equipment deployment,

 Making design amendments and costing them,

 Measuring and certifying approved works for payment,

 Preparation of progress information and general contract


management.
 Preparation of Minutes for the monthly site/progress review meetings.
 Responsible for Supervision, Management and Coordination of onsite
activities, involving road sealing and road base works;
 Responsible for determining, the invert levels of drain lines, ensuring
that these drains are laid to specified gradients and carrying out tests
on the newly laid drains to confirm functional requirements;

 Also, responsible for determining the most economical and efficient


route of laying supply and drainage pipes.

1.3 POST PUPILLAGE ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE

1.3.1 Introduction

This chapter describes my post pupillage engineering experience following the successful
completion of pupillage engineering training in 2015. As for section 2 before, this section 3 includes
the description of the Tasks on which I was employed; Clear explanation of the precise positions

occupied together with the degree of responsibilities assigned to me; Explanation of any special
problems met and on any areas where I obtained extensive experience where appropriate;
Indication of size and cost of works; Major Challenges experienced; Principle lessons learnt from
the major challenges; An indication of photographs taken during and/or after execution of project
works. All management of my post pupillage experience has been done with AZU group of
companies i.e. Net World (U) Ltd, Nippon Parts, Trace Mark (U) Ltd and Azu properties ltd. It should
be noted that as contract manager I was required to work with a number of companies under Azu

with designs, industry standards and specifications of the

as specified by the contract drawings i.e. Architectural and
Structural.
 Communicate and work hand in hand with the project
consultants in case of any issues or changes to be made.
 Study contract bills of quantities and specifications carefully.
 File daily site report activities.
 Paid particular attention to testing of concrete especially the
random casting of concrete.
 Inspect and ensure that materials brought on site by the various
suppliers are of good and specified quality.

Challenges  Inadequate quantities allowed for in the works BoQs for some of
the work items like culvert installation.

 Frequent equipment break-down.

Comment: Project was successfully completed but Bweramule-Kyapa Road (2.4km), Kabimbiri –
Haibale Road (4.0km) was not gravelled upon because of lack of enough funds.
