Instructions to Candidates:
Candidates must answer any FOUR questions.

Question 1

Determine the shear and moment in the beam of Figure Q1, as a function of x,
where 0m < x < 10m. Assume the support at B is a “roller” and A is a “pin”.

Question 2

For the beam of Figure Q2, determine the deflection at C using the virtual
work method. Assume the support at A is a pin and B is a roller. Use:
E = 200GPa , and
I = 10x108 mm4 .
Note: I.V.W. = ʃ [ (m.M) / (EI) ] dx (25 marks)

Question 3

Figure Q3 shows a continuous beam ABC with a fixed support at A, and roller
supports at B and C. The support at B settles by 10mm when the loads are
applied. Use the following data to calculate the support reactions at A, B and
C (due to the combined actions of the loadings shown and the settlement of
support B) using the moment distribution method.
Second moment of area of span AB, IAB = 83.4x106 mm4
Second moment of area of span BC, IBC = 125.1x106 mm4
Young’s modulus, E = 207,000 N/mm2

Question 4

A cantilever beam of length 6m has an additional support at a distance of 2m

from its free end as shown in figure Q4. Determine the minimum value of W at
which collapse occurs if the plastic section modulus of the beam is
855x103 mm3 , and the yield strength is 300 N/mm2

Figure Q7

Based on a one metre length of culvert, determine the bending moments at A and E due to:

a) the total characteristic dead loads (permanent actions) - gk

b) the characteristic imposed loads (variable actions) - qk
c) the design value of the combined (permanent and variable) actions
Determine:
d) the bending moment at D due to the combined design value of actions in c)
e) sketch the bending moment diagram for the culvert; include values at A,D and E.

Soil pressure calculations are not required.

A data sheet showing standard bending moment diagrams is attached.

Design data

Characteristic loadings

Characteristic dead loads: surfacing = 24kN/m3

(Permanent actions) backfill = 19kN/m3
reinforced concrete = 25kN/m3
waterproofing = 0.5kN/m2

Characteristic imposed loads pedestrian/cycleway = 5.0kN/m2

(Variable actions)

Partial load factors

permanent actions γG = 1.35

variable actions γQ = 1.5
