TSLB3093 LANGUAGE ARTS IN THE PRIMARY ESL CLASSROOM

TOPIC 4 (b) Children’s Literature Task posted on 29 Jan 2018 (Monday)

TUTORIAL TASK - In pairs, discuss and present one of the following.

Your presentation can be in any form as long as it can still be referred to after your
presentation. Remember to write your names. The topics are as follows:

“The Contemporary Children’s Literature component is taught during the Language

Arts lessons …Teachers are to exploit texts in these genres to create fun-filled and
meaningful activities in language learning so that pupils enjoy the learning experience
1 and gain exposure to the aesthetic use of language.” DSKP Bahasa Inggeris SK Tahun
Empat, p.16.

Discuss and present what is meant by “the aesthetic use of language”, and how it is
realised in the Children’s Literature [sic] in the KSSR component (as stated in the
course RMK).

2 What are some techniques that induce children’s dislike for literature and should be
avoided? Discuss and produce a list and share it with the class. Demonstrate each
negative technique to the class.

The single most important thing you can do to enhance children’s understanding and
3 appreciation of [reading a] book is - - teaching readers to construct their own schema
before reading. Carry out the pre-reading schema-building process in the class.

4 In reference to a text/story, discuss and present the literary elements of a fiction. i.e.
character, point of view, setting, plot, theme, style and tone.

5 Teachers need to listen to each child read orally at least once a week. Draw up the
critical guidelines for children’s oral reading. Present to the class.

6 Discuss and present the value of Children’s Literature.

Most young children love poetry. They delight in the sounds and rhythm. However by
7 middle grades, many children begin to lose interest in poetry or even develop a strong
dislike for it. Why does this happen?” Based on your experience, readings and
discussion, compose a list entitled “Ways to teach Kids to Hate Poetry.” Present
and carry it out with the class.
