Tutorial 9: Chapter 8 Acid – Base Equilibria

1. Define the following acid-base theories:

(a) Brønsted – Lowry Theory

(b) Lewis Theory
(c) Arrhenius Theory

2. Identify the acid, base, conjugate acid and conjugate base in each of the following:

(a) NH3(aq) + HF(aq) NH4+(aq) + F-(aq)

(b) CH3COOH(aq) + H2O(l) CH3COO⁻(aq) + H3O+(aq)
(c) HC2H3O2(aq) + H2O(l) C2H3O2(aq) + H3O+(aq)

(d) CH3COO (aq) + HCN(aq) CH3COOH(aq) + CN− (aq)
(e) H2PO4−(aq) + NH3(aq) HPO42− (aq) + NH4+(aq)

(f) HNO2(aq) + OH (aq) NO2−(aq) + H2O(l)

3. Determine the amount (in mole) of strong base barium hydroxide, Ba(OH)2 that must
be dissolved in water to produce 900 mL of solution with a pH of 10.8.
(Ans: 2.84 × 10-4 mole)

4. The value of water ionization constant, Kw, depends on temperature. At body

temperature (37°C), Kw = 2.4 ×10-14. Calculate the concentration of H3O+ ions and pH
of pure water at body temperature. (Ans: [H3O+] =1.549×10-7M, pH =6.810)
[Sept 2016]

5. Hydrogen carbonate, H2CO3, is a weak acid with Ka value of 4.4 × 10⁻7. The
dissociation of hydrogen carbonate is shown below.

H2CO3(aq) + H2O(l) H3O+(aq) + HCO3⁻(aq)

Determine the pH of a 0.20 M of H2CO3 solution by constructing Initial Change

Equilibrium (I.C.E.) table. (Ans: pH = 3.53)
[Sept 2014]
6. Calcium hypochlorite, Ca(OCl)2, is used as a disinfectant for swimming pools. When
dissolved in water it produces hypochlorous acid, HClO which ionized as below:

HClO(aq) ⇌ H+(aq) + ClO(aq) Ka = 3.0×10-8

Given that the pH of the pool water after Ca(OCl)2 added is 7.8 and the initial
concentration of HClO is A.

(a) Construct an Initial Change Equilibrium (I.C.E.) table in terms of concentration.

(b) Determine the initial and equilibrium concentration of HClO.

(Ans: 2.41 × 10-8 M; 8.3 × 10-9 M)
[Sept 2012]
