There is butterfly that hides by appearing to be a dry leaf. This butterfly is sometimes referred to
as the “Lead leaf” butterfly. Snowhite rabbits can go frolicking in the snow without panicking
because of their white color. The opossum‟s way is simply pretending to be dead.

Teacher will distribute the following paragraph and let each group give the main ideas.
a) There are different kinds of soil. Some are made up of rich black loam, some are
sandy and some are clay. Each of this kind of soil has advantages for the healthy growth of
certain kind of crops.
b) Gilbert dreamed of having bicycle of his own. A day before the fiesta, there was a
Ride-A-Bike Contest. Gilbert joined the contest. He brought home a brand new bike.
IV. EVALUATION
A. Make list of all words used as nouns in the following sentences.
Regular exercise is good for you. Millions of people are getting in shape in different
ways. Joggers are all over parks and streets. More and more people are riding bicycles. Many
parents carry their small babies when they ride or walk.
Many companies are encouraging their employees to exercise. Some companies have
built gyms and planned recreational and athletic activities for their people. People who exercise
seem to be happier and do better work.
B. What is the main idea of first paragraph? Second paragraph? The whole selection? Write
them on your paper.

1. Jessie and Sonny found a pool on the farm. It was not deep and the boy swam and splashed
in it happily. That afternoon when they returned to take another swim, they found four carabaos

decided to knock on the door of the priest‟s room. The priest let him in and he was given food.

A boy named Francis Rodriguez won in the recent National Quiz Bee in Mathematics
sponsored by the Department of Education. He really loves Mathematics.

“How did I develop such wonderful and speedy computational skills? I believe it‟s a
matter of deep interest and constant correct practice. Even before I went to school, Father
would teach me how to work with numbers patiently. Then and now, I usually do extra exercises
in other books aside from my assignments. I help others solve mathematical problems and
puzzles. I don‟t miss mathematics portion of the news paper or magazine. Well, I think I have
the best teachers at home. Father is in aeronautics. Mother is a mathematics teacher, and my
eldest brother is a computer analyst. In school, Mr. Lim, my teacher and coach, has taught me
how to develop concentration in analyzing problems and solving them.

If a gerund comes after a linking verb, it is used as predicate noun.

a direct object or receiver of its action. Is experimenting the direct object of the
verb?
What word comes before doing? You learned that by is a preposition. Doing is a
noun that goes with it. Therefore, the gerund doing is used as object of the
preposition.
