Away in a Manger – Mack Wilberg; arr. Lisa Rogers & Richard Gipson
This 19th century Christmas carol was once thought to be from Martin Luther and
the 16th century reformation, however it is now known to be completely American in
origin. This setting beautifully uses the keyboard percussion instruments (Marimba,
Vibraphone, Xylophone, and Glockenspiel) to recreate the shimmering smoothness of a
choir and organ.

Beauty and the Beast – Alan Menken Formatted: Font: 16 pt, Bold, Font color: Accent 5

Tale as old as time / True as it can be

Barely even friends / Then somebody bends / Unexpectedly.
Just a little change / Small to say the least
Both a little scared / Neither one prepared / Beauty and the Beast
Every just the same / Ever a surprise
Ever as before / Ever just as sure
As the sun will rise / Beauty and the Beast
Tale as old as time / Tune as old as song
Bittersweet and strange / Finding you can change / Learning you were wrong
Certain as the sun / Rising in the east
Tale as old as time / Song as old as rhyme / Beauty and the Beast
Tale as old as time / Song as old as rhyme / Beauty and the Beast

Let it Snow – Sammy Cahn & Jule Styne
Oh, The Weather outside is frightful, / But the fire is so delightful,
And since we’ve no place to go, / Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
It doesn’t show signs of stopping, / And I brought some corn for popping.
The lights are turned way down low, / Let it snow, let it snow let it snow
When we finally kiss good night, / How I’ll hate going out in the storm.
But if you really hold me tight, / All the way home I’ll be warm.
The fire is slowly dying, / And, my dear. We’re still good – byeing,
But as long as you love me so. / Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Christopher Tate, Daniel Lee, Alireza Oladaskari, Austin Truong

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree – Johnny Marks
Rocking around the Christmas Tree / at the Christmas party hop
A mistletoe hung where you can see / Every Couple tries to stop
Rocking around the Christmas Tree / Let the Christmas spirit ring
Later we’ll have some pumpkin pie / and we’ll do some caroling
You will get a sentimental feeling / when you hear, voices sing
“Let’s be jolly; Deck the halls with boughs of holly”
Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree / Have a happy holiday
Everyone dancing merrily / In a new old fashionedold-fashioned way

Europa (Earth’s Cry Heaven’s Smile) – Carlos Santana; arr. Bill Purse Formatted: Font: 16 pt, Bold, Font color: Accent 5

This hauntingly beautiful instrumental features Santana’s famous emotional guitar

cry that demonstrates his world-class technique. The original, ethereal “Europa”
first appeared on the 1976 album Amigos, and a live version appeared on the 1977
album Moonflower. This continually popular instrumental is here arranged for a
four–part guitar ensemble with soloists.

Jingle Bell Rock – Bobby Helms Formatted: Font: 16 pt, Bold, Font color: Accent 5

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock / jingle bells swing and jingle bell ring
Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun / Now the Jingle hop has begun
Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock / Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square / In the frosty air.
What a bright time, it’s the right time / To rock the night away
Jingle bell time is a swell time / To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet / Jingle around the clock
Mix and mingle in the jingling beat / That’s the jingle bell rock
Tyler Sylvester, Alyssa Kido, Jason Lee, Caleb Ong

Somewhere In My Memory– John Williams; arr. Larry Moore Formatted: Font: 16 pt, Bold, Font color: Accent 2

This heartwarming and instantly recognizable theme from the “Home Alone” Formatted: Font: 14 pt
movies evokes the nostalgia that we often get during the holiday season: The tenderness
of being with family and friends we have while still and wishing we could spend it with
others who might not be able to be with us at that time.

Ave Verum CorpusAni Ma’amin (I Believe) – W.A. Mozart;Traditional
Jewish Folksong; arr. Charles H. GiffenJohn Leavitt
Mozart composed this piece a few months before he died at the young age of 35.
The sacred Latin text comes from the Roman Catholic liturgy and would have traditionally
been sung during the serving of Communion. The Latin words describe Christ’s suffering
through the crucifixion, but end with the hope for a future in heaven. This message of
hope for a better future is one that we can all parallel to our lives and our worldThis
Traditional Hebrew Song and its text provided comfort to the victims and survivors of the
Holocaust, serving as a beacon of hope for the future and for mankind..

Sisi ni moja (We are one)Boreas: The Cold North Wind – Jacob
NarverudTodd Parrish
This composition shares a message of unity combining both words in English and
African language Swahili. The Swahili words “Sisi ni moja” translate to “We are one.” In
this time of conflict and divisiveness, we hope to spread this idea of unity. These words
remind us that we are all human regardless of our differences, and we hope as a choir
and a community we learn to embrace and value each other for these differences. In
Greek mythology, Boreas is the cold, north wind. The mysterious opening builds and
gives each section an opportunity to lead the group. Finally, after building to climax and
a key change, the cold north wind has one more gust to take the listeners to an exciting
finale.

This fun song is from the Brazilian genre of Marcatu. This genre of music
always features a variety of percussion instruments, call and response
singing, elaborate costumes, and dancing. Maracatu is often performed
during the celebrations of Carnival in Brazil. The lyrics of the song describe
the beating of the drums, ornate costumes of lions and elephants, and sailing
on the vast green sea.

Haiku Hallelujah (from “The Messiah”) – Lynne MorleyG.F. Handel; arr.
Chip Davis / Robert Longfield
This wonderfully meditative piece draws inspiration from the Japanese poetry form Formatted: Font: 14 pt
of the same name. Haiku’s three-line structure of syllables—5, 7, 5—is seen in the
melodic and harmonic structure of this piece. The main melodic phrase is constructed of
7 notes; the scale used to create this music is built off the pentatonic scale (the 5-note
scale), and at any given time there are only 3 melodically distinct lines of music
happening.Mannheim Steamroller is famous for its unique and striking settings of holiday
favorites. Here, Handel’s famous Hallelujah Chorus gets a high-powered rock make-
over, brimming with energy and excitement. Hopefully this contemporary new look will
liven up your holiday seasons!

The Promised LandA Carol Triptych – Lynne MorleyPierre La Plante

Another piece by the same composer, this piece focuses on two very unique techniques
to guitar music. The first is finger style play where the performers are asked to play
specific notes by alternating between the five fingers of their right hand. This technique
when played in an ensemble setting can often give a delightful rolling feeling of perpetual
motion as the musical lines connect in harmony. The other technique used in this piece
is known as dropped tuning, where some of the guitars purposefully detune their
instruments in order to increase the range of notes they are able to play.A Carol Triptych
recalls the Christmas story in the form of three familiar European carols: Silent Night
(Germany), We Three Kings (England), and Sing We Now of Christmas (France). Silent
Night is played by unison clarinets accompanied only by wind chimes, and serves as a
prelude to the arrival of We Three Kings. Sing We Now of Christmas is a song of joyous
celebration introduced by a fanfare of trumpets and percussion.

Swing ItThe Nightmare Before Christmas – Barry GreeneDanny Elfman;

arr. Michael Brown
This fun little piece has been taken on and expanded by our students at PHS.
Originally a very plain and simple piece, we’ve worked together to give it a more jazzy
and stylized character – modifying strumming patterns, supplementing jazz rhythms, and
creating improvised solo breaks. The classic animated movie “The Nightmare Before
Christmas” features deliciously sinister music by composer Danny Elfman. A unique
offering for the holiday season, this appealing medley for band includes: Overture;
Christmas Eve Montage; Sally’s Song; This is Halloween and End Title.

Concert Chorale
Gloucestershire Wassail – Traditional, collected by Ralph Vaughan
Williams
The title of this piece refers to the English county of Glouscestershire where the
tradition of Wassailing has been around since the middle ages. Wassailing is the practice
of going door-to-door, singing and offering a drink of apple cider from a communal
wassail bowl in exchange for gifts. The refrain of the song is thought to date back to
medieval times, and each of the many verses offers a toast to a variety of livestock and
house servants.

Holy Night, Silent Night – arr. Ruth Elaine Schram

This arrangement combines the popular French Christmas carol O Holy Night with
the popular German Christmas carol Silent Night. Just as these French and German
songs are combined here, during World War I, the song Silent Night was sung by French,
German, and English troops at the unofficial ceasefire known as the Christmas Truce of
1914. This once again demonstrates the great power of music as a unifying force in the
world.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year – arr. Mark Hayes
This seasonal Favorite was originally recorded by pop singer Andy Williams in the
1950s. It has since been covered by numerous artists including Johnny Mathis, Amy
Grant, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Paul Anka, and Chicago. It serves as a reminder to us
that being around loved ones and making memories with friends and family are what
truly make the holiday season special
